Marine Casualty
Well I have been playing this game for you for years now I must say and I have never had this message before. Is this the message when a ship hits an uncharted rock something like 0.01% chance... Really makes me wish I had bought the Euro lottery ticket because that was £170 million. Must be about the same type chance.

RE: Marine Casualty
[:D]I've seen it a few times. It is rare. I've never seen it so bad though. Hope you have a port nearby with naval support....GP

RE: Marine Casualty
For your information when I found the ship it was actually at a friendly base, was there a message that I missed? It's trying to discharge now. Thank you for your concern for the crew. At least is a transport ship and not a carrier. It's nice to know though that the game has these kind of rare events. One thing we don't see is plane collisions, I thought these were actually quite common in World War II.
RE: Marine Casualty
Don't know the chances but HIJMS KAGA suffered significant damage hitting an uncharted rock in the DEI. She was restricted to about 19 kts during the DEI campaign and completely missed the Indian Ocean sortie of the the Kido Butai because KAGA had to return to Japan for drydock repairs.
IIRC the USS Missouri hit an uncharted rock in Penobscot Bay and was subsequently laid for repairs.
And there is the total loss of HIJMS Mutsu to an unexplained spontaneous magazine explosion in 1943.

RE: Marine Casualty
Thanks for that makes me feel pretty good. You learn something new about the real world as well as the game every day.
RE: Marine Casualty
That's not the hitting a rock / reef event. It will say hit rock or run aground or something to that effect in the message if that occurs. A marine casualty as I understand it is an event like a boiler explosion or maybe a spontaneous fire below decks - some kind of catastrophic equipment failure.
You definitely had a bad one there. That ship is certainly doomed with that sys and fires unless you are already sitting in a huge port. If it has to unload before getting help then it's probably doomed anyway.
I had a marine casualty on a DD but it wasn't nearly that bad and the ship was saved. Was out of action for 3 weeks or a month.

RE: Marine Casualty
Is there a random event for Captain Queeg being deposed by a mutiny during a storm?
RE: Marine Casualty
1. That ship is doomed no matter how big the base and base support. If it was a warship with damage control teams aboard, it might have a chance but not a merchantman.ORIGINAL: cavalry

2. You do not have to unload a cargo ship to disband it to fight fires. Ships with troops aboard cannot disband until they unload the troops.
3. During the game turn execution, little messages pop up on screen and sometimes are repeated in the little window at the bottom left. These messages are brief if you have your "General Messages" delay set to less than one second in the Player Preferences screen (second button from the left at the top of the game map screen).
3. If you missed the message during turn execution, it is often repeated in the Ops report next turn. It tends to be buried with a lot of other administrative messages, but you really need to read the Ops report carefully every turn to spot problems like this one.
4. I have had similar rare issues like tankers spontaneously catching fire at sea far from any enemy, a cargo ship exploding while unloading cargo, a ship under repairs (upgrade or damage repair) catching fire, etc. Hitting rocks is most common during amphib landings.

Just wondering! Has anybody ever had a battleship blow up due to an unexplained marine casualty a la HIJMS Mutsu or a carrier or battlehship get damaged by an "uncharted rock" a la USS Missouri or HIJMS Kaga?

RE: Marine Casualty
Can't remember the specific ship or location, but on at least two occasions I have had warships strike uncharted rocks. I do recall that running TFs along the inside channel of the Great Barrier Reef resulted in several messages about hitting reef/coral/grounding on reef. The latter resulted in the ship being immobilized for at least one round. That also sometimes happens with the "(ship X) runs aground" incident message when TFs are in a coastal hex.ORIGINAL: spence

EDIT: an incident rate of one in 10,000 sounds pretty remote, but if you put several thousand ships on the water for a few days it doesn't take long to get to that one in 10K! [X(] [:D]

Maybe not where exactly but I'm pretty sure that you'd remember if a CV or BB ran aground or blew up.

Mmm, dinner, I'm just grilling a nice piece of angus/wagyu cross eye fillet, and cracking a bottler of shiraz...
Sorry, what were we talking about just then?

In my last game lost a big tanker that way, just sunk in the turn the message appeared.

RE: Marine Casualty
Okay thanks for all the tips and advice. Obviously collisions are quite common in a new version of this game they could add a multitude of little things that can go wrong. One thing I would like to see is the chance of detecting ships in port using spies et cetera.

Those would be under coast watcher reports. Too bad they don't include LCUs and Air units in those reports.

Arco structure reports printed anywhere are are they only shown on the screen. I do not always pay too much attention to them as they always seem so random. How accurate are they?

I don't understand your first sentence - what is "Arco structure"? Is the sentence asking a question starting from the double "are"?
If you are referring to the aforementioned coastwatcher reports, they are notoriously inaccurate but will occasionally yield an accurate gem. If they give you a ship name there is a fair chance they will be accurate.
