Super-impressed by game manual

Warplan is a World War 2 simulation engine. It is a balance of realism and playability incorporating the best from 50 years of World War 2 board wargaming.

Super-impressed by game manual

Post by Dgold »

As a 50 year wargaming veteran, after reading the Manual, I am very impressed at the scope and detail of this game. It is everything I could wish for in an ETO game.
I cannot wait to buy this game and post a review.

Hopefully a Pacific War version of this game will eventually be released.

Thank you very much. I put a lot of thought in this game. My wife called it a labor of love.

My philosophy is that sacrificing personal gain for a quality product has more value in the long run for the success of the product.

Alvaro - due to the complexity of the game, have you or the testers made up a checklist of game turn tasks, to make sure new gamers do not forget any important actions in a turn?

If not, I will make one up and post it online, once I get the game.

Thanks

I have not but that hasn't been an issue. What you forget in Warplan is the same as say Strategic Command. You also have plenty of reminders in the side bar message system and prev/next button.

The complexity is in planning not playing.

But feel free if you like.

You won’t need a checklist, at the start of a turn you can move and then build or build and then move or use rail, build and then move or sea, air, move, build, deploy, move again, build some more, rail, air some more and then build and then move or...

It’s all very intuitive and the thinking is in strategy, that’s the hard part, the mechanics are intuitive and natural.

Is there a separate manual for the editor?

Yes there is. I also included the images so if you want to change the counters or the map you can.

You just copy the images into the scenario folder you are playing.

IMHO this is the best compliment that can be made to a wargame.

From the game blurb: "the best from 50 years of World War 2 board wargaming." Al has done a good job of synthesizing a lot of good stuff into WarPlan. He's also familiar with the WWII computer wargames over the past 20-30 years, and knows what has worked well and what hasn't. So WarPlan isn't exactly "new" but it is a better mousetrap. The concepts are sound, and if anything there may need some adjustments here and there for play balance as players find issues during gameplay.

The manual seems to be less about 'the rules' and more about examples of how to go about managing things. This would seem to indicate the game is indeed intuitive and the onscreen tooltips and charts should allow a patient player the ability to get all of the vital info from the UI itself needed to make game decisions regarding operations and logistics. Is this correct?
