Air Unit Transfers

Post by Michael T »

I can see how with rail movement a limited number of grounds can shift from one front to another quickly.

But what about air units? For example how long will it take to transfer a air unit from say the eastern front to Sicily?

Have you thought about perhaps coding air transfer missions where range is doubled/trippled or something and the air unit can't do any other type of mission that turn.

Air units can move or be railed.

The thought of a Stuka unit railing from Smolensk to Sicily is strange. They flew as far as I know.

In all my games I have never railroaded an air unit, just fly them I have.

Yes but how long did it take you to transfer them from one theatre to another?

I am not reinventing the wheel here, Transfer rules for air units is pretty standard.

Did you ever try going from say Smolensk to Sicily?

planes might fly, but the ground crews, fuel, support staff, and massive logistical arm that goes with 100+ aircraft are likely going to be railheaded

This. Planes are cheap. Germany had thousands of planes on the ground late in the war. They didn't have enough pilots and fuel.

You can rail any kind of unit an unlimited distance(?) each turn. So an entire Panzer Corp can get from Russia to Sicily in one move. Yet an air unit can get there in how many?

Surely someone on the test team knows this [X(]

well I can make a rough calculation.

Say 2400Km/30km (hexes) = around 80 hexes.

So a Stuka can fly 12 hexes per turn (two moves)

So we are looking at 6 or 7 turns to make that trip, unless I am missing something.

That's too long a time period unless I am wrong about the distances involved and range of the Stuka's in WarPlan.

Maybe it's just me, but in board games I have played, it's not unusual for Air Units to be able to perform Transfer Missions that greatly increase the distance they can fly at the cost of being unable to attack anything that turn.

Railing doesn't use oil as I understand it. Flying the distance....?

Yeah it is the precious oil that is used flying when you can rail for no oil used that should be kept in mind. Germany will have to save every ounce that they can.

Yes, and if there's a global war version, at some point someone will want to send some planes from Moscow to Vladivostok. I'm sure that there will be some rule for that, instead of using 20 turns (9000Km) to fly there. I don't remember the time scale for each turn, but surely a couple of years...

IIRC the time scale for each turn is two weeks.
