Squad Battles Updated

Post by Cataphract88 »

Taken from the John Tiller Site:

Squad Battles Updates

Updates for the entire Squad Battles series of games have been released. This round features the "Top Down Mod" from Richie61 (Ed Pacito) as a tribute to his extensive support for the series both in generating mods, but also in game play - with over 1600 PBEM matches reported at The Blitz club. Ed passed away in 2018. These updates also include a roll up of most of the custom scenarios found around the web generated by a variety of players. We have also released the Map Editor for this series and it is included in the update for each game. Visit the Updates page to download them all.

They've updated the whole range. [:)]

Have they fixed the graphical bug that makes some of them unplayable on modern DirectX systems?

Wish the source code was given to someone willing and able to upgrade the serues. Multi story buildings and a new ammo mechanic and rate of fire.

Then we have a perfect turn based squad wargame.

Im afraid them releasing that and bringing all the games up to the same version means there wont be any more SB games.

The unlimited ROF for defending units turned me and my mates off that series. Such a dumb rule.

We already have that, at least since 1985, that game is Advanced Squad Leader.

ASL is perfect turn based squad game, hands down, no expectations and no contenders.

The next runner up is Shrapnel's Steel Panthers WW2 and MBT, period.

Ahh, true. I’ll admit I never devoted much time to the series, only owning the ww1 title , which in retrospect was probably not the best first go at the series. ( I got sucked in because it appeared that Cavalry combat was modeled and I hoped to mod the game for Franco Prussian skirmishes or even earlier ware fare. Alas, the engine treated a squad of horses like a single truck so my dreams were dashed).
That being said, squad level battles are even more dependent on terrain variety for longevity, that I think with a map editor I might pick up one of the modern titles.
