My thoughts after my first game.

Warplan is a World War 2 simulation engine. It is a balance of realism and playability incorporating the best from 50 years of World War 2 board wargaming.

My thoughts after my first game.

Post by incbob »

First I want to say that for a first edition, first release, that this game is awesome. If it can be built upon it will prove to be one of the grognards go to WWII games. That said....

* Need a way to see a land units attack value and strength.

* Need a way to better see who has control of a hex. The current colors blend very well and are to light to clearly distinguish.

* I would like to be able to control individual nations. Germany not Germany/Italy, Great Britain not Great Britain/Soviet Union.

* I know modding has been enabled, but a way to see the unit's name on the counter would be nice and immersing.

* You should get a nice popup when you take over a country so you can see what production you gained.

* A toggle so that I can tell what units are eligible for Supply Trucks/Air Transport.

* A way to build up infrastructure such a rail and ports. Please not that the ability to build up a port will be vital when you do your Pacific game.

* Need more information than "port interdicted." Who, how much, etc?

* Soviet Union endless. So, I didn't pay attention and took Moscow as Germany. I go and look to see what more/how much I need to get them to surrender and it is endless war. I understand that there is some debate on how much it would have taken the Soviet Union to surrender, if they would have, but this is a game. At some point after I have crushed my enemy I should win. (More on this in a moment).

* Partisans. What can I say. Not fun at all. In fact, it detracts from the game. As the game is currently now I see no purpose to garrison units since Partisans will popup right next to them anyway. Soviet partisans are even worse. At one point I had an entire Army Group out of supply to due to partisan units in western Poland. I can understand a unit drain, I can even understand a loss of production, but to take the supply from an entire Army Group for 2 weeks? There needs to be a clear way to stop Partisans without spamming units.

* Speaking of spamming units. As Germany I built single divisions as my garrison units. At one point I had built every single unit division I could. I guess I can build Corps and then detach divisions, but I shouldn't run out IMO.

The last note is about the AI. I know an AI is not a replacement for a human and the undertaking to program an AI for this type of game has outdone many a larger studio/publisher. This AI does have some great qualities and does not make the simple stupid mistakes many AI's make. That being said, it leaves something to be desired. I am not a Grognard. Usually in games of strategy I find the AI is enough of a challenge for me (I try not to game the system), but not this game.

I played the Axis on the default level. Took Egypt then moved into Iraq and up to the oil fields in the Caucuses. All of this with the Italian army. On the Western front the France AI had my stymied, but overwhelming force got them. Then nothing. Not even bombing from England. As for the Soviet Union...I took Moscow in May 1942. I am not a good enough player to do that so I know the AI needs help.

I look forward to updates and playing this game a long time.

The information you recive as well as the FOW could be looked into. This is something the developer is looking into.

I dont have a problem with hex ownership but I see your point. I have the same issue with port and port supply.

Control just one nation would be great but I think it might be difficult to program.

Unit name would be nice if it doesnt clog the units numbers.

A information of what you recive after you surrended a country would ne nice,
(Maybe you could even recive additional units in division form representing captured material)

You can see that on each units panel but maybe you mean a overview page?

Infrastructure has been a hot topic, the developer is looking into this.

Yes interdiction and air intercept would be good to gain more information, also a hot topic.

The developer are looking into make the surrender for Soviet when all its all cities are taken. But we will see.

I myself like the partisans albeit I think them a bit to strong in the starting years. But there is a hot topic as well with a special thread for it with many suggestions, will be intresting to see what the developer do here.

Building units is limited by your countries logistic, supply and your manpower. In the late war the logistics together with lack of oil are what slows you done. There is a limit on what a country can hold in the field.I find this refreshing.

The developer is constantly working on the AI and it is getting better all the time. Still it has its limitations.
That the developer is constaly imroving this game is what really makes me excited.

#1 the unit panel has that information. You can also show it in the options. I have 3 different visuals for units and for each type
#2 you can modify the control.png to the colors of your choice or put flags if you wish. Look at the Editor manual on how to do it
#3 It's on the list but with the current code it would require a big rework.
#4 There is no effective way to do it at the moment but it is on the list.
#5 A green square appears on units that used supply trucks, a yellow or red square appears on units that need supply
#6 Ports and rail are a mechanism that can be gamey. It would destroy the delicate balance of the supply system in Africa, during D-Day. It will remove the importance of strategic locations like Antwerp.
#7 Port interdiction is fairly easy to spot on who are the potentials. Is there a plane within 8 or ships within 4? There is your culprit.
#8 USSR. I am still think tanking this
#9 You don't need to hunt non-unit partisans. The rail repairs itself.
#10 Divs... I made it so there are no garrison units. You detach a div and you can set it to garrison status. Instead of a specific garrison unit which will always only be that.
#11 A.I. is always a work in progress. It will never match a human. PBEM is the best challenge.

#1 I would enjoy hotkeys to cycle between the three different visuals. Going back to the Options Menu it's a long way.
