Many units not showing up on purchase screen?

Post by superman81906 »

I am playing the 1939 campaign, I can not purchase field artillery for any of my axis countries, it does not even show up on the purchase menu, anyone know what I am missing? Are there more units that don't show up by design in the default 1939 campaign? And if so, why?

I took a look at the editor and discovered many units not used by the game/campaign. I can see why some countries would not get specific units as they did not have access to them historically. But why leave out things like light tanks, field artillery, and recon units? Can the AI not handle a larger variety of units? Or is the game too easy with a larger variety of units? And if I modded the campaign to include the new units, would the AI use them on its own in combat (effectively),and unit purchasing? Or are AI purchases linear in each campaign, as in they are already predetermined, and I would have to mod that data too? Are the unused units already balanced to fit the game as is, or do they need to be modded manually to fit into the game after inclusion?

Thanks

Yeah I've often wondered these same questions myself and thought about modding them in but afraid of AI issues.

By default the campaigns have been designed with only certain unit types in mind, even if the list of possible units is longer than what you see in game. The reasons for this vary, from some are in place for future use, or for possible smaller scale scenarios, to only some unit types are applicable to perhaps one country and then not another and so on.

Again, these were just all design decisions for what we wanted out of the existing campaigns and for no other reason.

In terms of AI, there are no general logic limitations as the AI can handle any unit type you enable, many mods and other releases in our series attest to this, you would just have to properly enable them in game.

For example if a certain campaign doesn't use a particular unit type you are interested in adding, you'd just have to ensure the stats match towards what you would be after for these additional unit types (it would arguably need to make sense against other campaign units), and you'd have to go through the AI PURCHASE scripts (if editing and adding to a default campaign) to let the AI know it should possibly purchase these additionally added units as needed.

Hope this helps,
Hubert

I have to say the the editor is very flexible and looks like it might be just as much fun as the actual game. Very happy that the devs have supported modding this game with a lot of effort. As far as the units, it sounds like if you balance them in correctly and not too many, I feel like the AI may be able to use them effectively. This is nice. The game keeps getting better and better.

I would tend to agree with the decision. Most recon was battalion or less from what I know, not a corp or army. With 40 miles per hex, field artillery gets a bit wonky too. Of course, you can make the same argument with anti-tank as well.

Tough to get promotions, position & gotta have a goal in mind when using these units. Germans have lots of needs. I'm guilty of buying the fun toys, rather than focus on the obvious method for destroying Russia. Rocket included, to pepper England.
Slaps issued: 16 - Patton, Dana White, Batman, Samson. Medals/Salutes given: 6, warnings received: 11, suspensions served: 4, riots: 2.
