Strange AI unit behavior

Post by HvMoltke »

I am in a game BBLite Scen 26 with stacking limit v. AI
I hold a front along a river, on the opposite side sit IJA units advancing towards me. Suddenly and without a battle one unit is on my side of the river.
My question is : normaly you have to shock attack to cross a river, when the other side is held by a defending unit.
So what is happening here?

Am 03.03. war ja schon eine japanische Einheit nördlich davon über den Fluss. Vielleicht waren es ja mehrere Einheiten und eine davon ist nach Süden marschiert? Oder Luftlandung?

LCU with AV=0 will cross the river w/o triggering shock attack - because it can't attack. Try to abstain from abusing this pretty useful feature yourself ;)

I think Kursk is correct - it must have moved SW into Pegu from out of the Japanese stack to the northeast. Since that is a land-land frontier, no shock attack.

Indeed.
Japanese LCUs advancing from the south cannot jump over the allied hexes, so it is definitely not one of them. Also, FOW can conceal enemy movement indicators, so you would not see a movement from the NE

Amphibious operations (including sub ones) can happen too, you should check your combat report

There are no enemy units adjacent to the contested hex that could have crossed a river to get there.

There was also no movement tick on the enemy unit stack to the northeast the turn prior where there is no river to cross.

I'm with GetAssista on this one.

The unit could have been landed by fast transport.

It is also tactically viable if the opponent expects crossing into the hex NE of Moulmein on the next turn. If the hex experiences strong shock attack and Allies retreat, units in Pegu will prevent Allied retreat there, and Allied army will be stranded, retreating into the NE jungle

Oh, wait, it's the AI. Smart bastard eh? [:D]

This seems most likely. The IJA holds the hex NE of Pegu on the 3rd and appears in the Pegu hex on the 4th.

Thanx for the input to all.
I was aware of the units in NE of Pegu on the other side of the river. I had sent my RE-planes there. What realy caught me on the wrong foot, was the rapid advance and then the crossing of the river short after. Short after the unit in Pegu proper.
As HansBolter suggests it must have been a fast transport. There were several Naval units in Moulmein.
As I wrote in another thread also a very fast thing short after the fall of Singer.
