The Judy could carry a heavier load than the Val, so a 500KG bomb was standard and they may have designed the 800KG one for short-range attacks on tough targets like the fast BBs. Of course first they had to get through massive CAP and horrendous flak .... [X(]

What about AIR skill of the groups' leaders? What is the Detection Level on the ports? Do you have any recon aircraft over Singapore? Maybe the DL there is so low that it reports no ships in the port?

The severe storms are probably part of the reason for no results, not even port hits.

Thread resurrection.

I was suprised to see that 70 exp air groups flying from Jap CVLs will also use the 800kg bomb. Also, some aircraft bombed Repair Shipyard with 800kg bombs!

Here is a combat report from RHS mod, scen 122, Allies, first turn. In stock scenario 001, the same attack is directed against ships in Davao.

Interesting....my belief was that the 800lber was the converted BB shell. Someone will set it straight.
There were at least 3 800kg bomb models.
Most common was used by BETTYs, but it had poor penetration. Worse than 500kg. Then there was one for ground attack, and converted shell, used during PH raid, which tended to not explode at all. That last had at least two more versions.

and converted shell, used during PH raid

The shaving of the shell weakened the shell such that it would break "in half" often when striking the deck armor of a battleship. Thus more often than not the shell's fuze separated from the bursting charge so that the shell had a low order detonation. Of the 10 shell-bombs that hit (exactly matching the pre-attack predictions of Lcdr Fuchida) only the one striking the USS Arizona functioned "as advertised".
