Can naval attack subs? Does buying escorts protect convoys?

Can naval attack subs? Does buying escorts protect convoys?

OK so air units can damage subs but what naval unit can attack them or is it just a matter of buying escorts through production to protect convoys??
Can moving surface ships next to a stopped enemy sub unit help air units' effectiveness in attack since the surface units aided reconnaissance?
