Late Soviet weapons

Post by Romka94 »

I noticed that Soviet Army in 1991 lacks some weapons that were created and adopted at that time, such as BMP-3 and RPG-26\ RPG-29. I wonder were they not done on purpose, cos it was produced in relatively small numbers before collapse of USSR and was not mainstream(around 300 BMP-3 were built, as far as i know), or just was considered insignificant?

The BMP-3 development was a troubled one, complicated both by initial teething issues and heated debate among Soviet officers on proposed armament. It was officially accepted into service in 1987 and the final trials took place from March 1988 until May 1989, when first operational vehicles were delivered. The vehicle was officially shown in public for the first time during the 1990 Victory Day Parade.

By the late 1991, only 35 were reported in Western USSR, confined to command schools and similar institutions. Exact number is not known, but the total might have been even as high as 100 vehicles produced by that point. Several were used during the First Chechen War (an unknown number was destroyed), but I found a reference in one of the Russian memoirs that it was still perceived as an "experimental vehicle" having issues with electronics (might have been caused by bad training as well).

There are also several other rare Soviet vehicles like IT-1 tank destroyer, several Falanga-based ATGM carriers like 9P137, or some less common infantry weapons and guns that are not in the game. Chief reason is that at certain point I had to "complete" Soviet faction because number of sprites was only increasing, and I am not even sure if we had introduced "rarity" parameter at the time when USSR was being worked upon.

Hopefully, one day those weapons and more formations will be included, particularly if somebody helps up with the list of additions.

Interesting... I readed that Russian Federation inherited 280 BMP- 3 vehicles from Soviet Union after its collapse, maybe it was wrong information. Thank you for answer!
