Targeting probs with T30 HMC

Post by headcount_slith »

The image shows two situations where I felt a shot should be possible but the game disagreed.

A) Because the T30 refuses to target the Tiger directly ("The armour's too thick"), I ask it to fire at the ground nearby instead and get a "NO CLEAR SHOT" message (I tried various spots near the Panzer without luck)

B) Having finally managed to track the Tiger (I moved further away) I change sides and try a shot at the ground near engine/exhaust. This time I get a "STEEP ANGLE" message despite the fact the angle looks perfectly practical.

Savegame to follow.

75mm HEAT (I'm assuming the T30 still had some of its 3 HEAT rounds) at a Tiger from the front isn't going to penetrate. 'No Clear Shot' because at 8m the T30 is inside the danger radius of its own 75mm HE. I'll take a look at the steep angle case.

That to me is when you cross the difficult boundary when programming the game, in reality when faced with impending doom, i would imagine that most of the crews would have taken the shot anyway and hoped for the best, risking blowing themselves up in the process but taking out the enemy who was about to kill them anyway.
But if you programmed the game to allow for these shots to be taken all the time, people would cry "my unit blew itself up this game is so dumb!".
The alternative is to program it in and involve a probability calculation based on the distance from the explosion as to how badly they would be hurt. But you may still get the same feedback. If their was a caluclation ran their could be an exception included that if unit is outwith 30% chance of self-harm, shot fires... though we could be here for a while [:D]

Changing the message/audio when too close from "No clear shot" to "We are too close" would stop people thinking its a bug though for a quicker solution.

To persuade the T30 to open fire in that situation I had to ensure it was at least 16m from the aim point which feels a little "Health & Safety" for a WW2 battlefield.

Incidentally, the pictured situation shows a third issue that probably warrants investigation - the Tiger's lack of interest in the T30. It prefers to fire at an inoffensive infantry team on its 7 o'clock rather than the heavily armed HT directly in front of it.

Even when I move the T30 to a new 'more tempting' position, the Tiger continues to ignore it, engaging infantry units instead.

Another T30-related oddity on Mousetrap.

Pictured is a close-range clash between a T30 and a PzIV that, visually at least, looks like it shouldn't be possible.

It's a little hard to tell from the image but the intervening wall is higher than both AFVs so should block LoS.

@ steve mcclair....the gun should still shoot at the target...you can still have the armours too think message but not...no clear shot....even if the gun cant penetrate it should still shoot at the target. within the CC matrix of things you could still get some sort of damage to the target if you hit it...at least that's what you have been telling us for years
