Got a new computer

Post by MrsWargamer »

New rig (thanks dad... dads are great eh).

Nothing special, it's just a lot better than what I had. No 'gamer' rig, of course, I don't play games that need the stuff. Granted, when your dad doesn't even balk at the 1000 dollar gamer rig, hmm maybe I should have just got it. Nah, I try not to press my luck :)

But man, do I ever hate the re install process. Especially my browser. Uggh I hate the password process.

Fortunately games is easy. It's all the utility software you forgot was even there that runs everything that makes me groan.

Exlains why I buy em more than I play em.

I use Lastpass with a Yubikey, I just need one password and it does the rest. Worst part I have when setting up a new pc is the download time for every app.

What kind of rig you get?

I saw some gamer rigs at BestBuy for 999 they had 16GB of RAM 3 or 4 TB of SSD/HDD and 2GB video cards, with a 27" monitor to boot, not too shabby.

My rig is a little (well a lot) different. I used an iMac 27" with a 1TB SSD and upgraded it to 40GB of RAM, and I run VMWare to run Windows 10, not to shabby, it also has a 4K monitor so it's pretty cool.

Not easy to assess, I rarely understand the numbers. I can put the pieces together as long as they work :)

240 SSD and a TB storage drive. Windows 10 8 gigs of ram. No video extras (rarely need it). I can add later of course (that's what birthdays are for, so that dads can be nice to their daughter :) ). Nice big shiny black case (that is eating up my physical desktop). Has one of those cases that has a window on the side. I need to invest in a disk drive (we still use those occasionally). I was happy to see it has some Asus guts in there (my fav brand).

My browser has been acting wonky since I got the new rig. No idea why my Chrome should not like anything.

Enough to play Flight Simulator 2020? I am scared myself.

Sounds like a good rig. Over video stuff, go for more RAM, its generally pretty easy to add it, the hard part is finding the correct RAM sticks.

You can forgo the Video card stuff if not needed but if you can afford an extra 8 or 16 GB of RAM (sticks) then you'll be pleasantly surprised.

CPU's help a lot too. The Steel Panthers games (I generally play both Shrapnel's ones) eat up lots of CPU power.

So for most war gaming PC's the best things to aim for are RAM, CPU and Storage (externals are like 4TB for about $100), do a little research on your rig and find out what kind of RAM you can get, in general RAM is pretty cheap and it boots your performance dramatically (allows more stuff to run).

So my 2 cents is:

CPU (usually only at the time of purchase, 4, 6 or 8 cores)
RAM (16 GB or more, pretty cheap)
Storage (I got a 4TB reg. external for $100 and I got a 500 GB SSD external for $90).

YMMV

Good luck and good hunting...

Heh, that reminds me of an event in a store. I told to a saleswoman I want a 3,5" floppy disk drive. Of course she showed me optical disc drive first. Then I took my phone and Googled images of floppy disks, showed one to her and said: "Have you seen one before?" Then she got me the right one with an USB-plug. I used it to install The Settlers with help of a DOSBox. Still a beautiful game which has nothing to shame to anything new made with RPG Maker.

Got one myself because of win 7 not being supported anymore come January.

New on win 10, Intel I-7 9th generation, 32g Ram, 2TB SSD hard drive, 8g graphics. I'm old so I still put a CD/DVD in it.

Like it so far but still trying to adapt to win 10 which has quite a few differences from win 7.

I haven't bought a new computer for over a dozen years, but there is *nothing* left of the the computer I bought back then. Over time I have upgraded everything, even the case and power supply. Maybe I should hint for a new CPU for Hannukah / Xmas . . .
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?

You don't have to exclude BD just because of your age you know [;)]
