Coastal Air Force Night Fighters

Gary Grigsby’s War in the West 1943-45 is the most ambitious and detailed computer wargame on the Western Front of World War II ever made. Starting with the Summer 1943 invasions of Sicily and Italy and proceeding through the invasions of France and the drive into Germany, War in the West brings you all the Allied campaigns in Western Europe and the capability to re-fight the Western Front according to your plan.

Coastal Air Force Night Fighters

Post by Shellshock »

Howdy all. Yup, I'm new to WitW.

So, you start the '43 campaign game with a few Beaufighter night squadrons down in the Mediterranean attached to the Coastal Air Force there in Algiers. A command HQ specializing mostly in naval interdiction .

Maybe it's a lack of imagination on my part, but I'm not quite sure what best to do with them down there. My thinking now is just to transfer them up to Bomber Command and have them join in the nocturnal fray over the Ruhr.

Any thoughts?

Hi Shellshock,

Welcome to the WitW forum. I hope you enjoy the game as much as I have the past six years. I still play it.

I agree with you that those Beaufighters are worthless in the Med and assigned to Coastal Air Force. The historical purists (not to disparage them) would say that you should leave them there because that's where they were in the war. I personally don't like to be bound by that, so I transfer them north as you suggest.

The other thing you can do with them is to use them as escorts for the Liberator B.III air groups assigned to Strategic Air Command, flying night bombing missions.

Thanks for the welcome cfulbright.

Okay yeah, I see now looking at the reinforcement schedule that Commonwealth 4-engine bombers eventually make an appearance in the Mediterranean. They could escort those or the U.S. bombers if I'm ever inclined to use them at night. The other possibility I was thinking of was switching them to fly day only fighter cover for Coastal Air naval patrols, but that seems redundant as there are currently plenty of Spitfires and P-39s in Coastal Air for that job.

Plus, it just seems like night fighters should fight at night. [:D]

Slowly getting into it but this game does have quite the steep learning curve. Like American football you have your air game and your ground game. Still trying to limit the fumbles.

Hang in there. It grows on you if you like this level of depth (some people don't).

Don't be shy about asking questions as you go.

Yes, the night fighters are quite useless in the Med, I would transfer them to England and bring back a massive amount of fighters, you're gonna need them.

Other option...
The Luftwaffe could attack your airbases at night. You can leave them in the Med, defending the airbases as a night interception force, just in case...
