Hard lessons to be learned - no Obvert, please

Gentlemen,

as some of you may know already, when looking for an Allied 43 pickup game I got one in 45 as IJ instead [8D]. So it is now my task to lead the dwindling forces of the empire of Japan from now (late february 45) to the end (to be determined by points) against my formidable new opponent Obvert. This is the coninuation of the Bullwinkle-Lokasenna game where Obvert took the Allied side over from Bullwinkle.

I do this as a learning experience and expect to be taught tough lessons, but hope to learn a lot. Accordingly, opinions, advice and input will be appreciated. Not sure how frequently I manage to update, though.

I will add some information about IJs current situation during the next few days, for now all I want to say is this as a teaser:

I think that Japan is not in bad shape with respect to what is left of the OOB and economically; Lokasenna did a great job. But unfortunately, Obvert did a great job as well with respect to the positioning of his troops and choosing of his recent landing sites. Contrary to what I had expected initially, at least currently my main problems to be solved are in my opinion not the air war or the naval war, but on the ground.

So follow along, if you like, on this journey into doom.

Gentlemen,

finally, I find the time to provide some more insight into the current situation / the pickle I'm in.

Here's the strategic map. Note the markings in yellow. The lines illustrate where Obvert is cutting the empire into pieces.

He owns the South Chinese Sea and I feel I cannot really contest him there with what is left.

The problem is: I have massive and experienced armies West of the line Pachoi-Liuchow-Chihkiang (taken by paradrop last turn) and south of his position on the northern tip of the Phillipines (which is why I am only partly happy with the success at Boac I reported above - if my opponent was Nemo, I would have made a bet that that was feeding me a success to get my troops out of the way for some time, while he was taking the northern Part of the PI which is more relevant; Obvert commented he had had is eyes on other things, which does not say he did not notice what was coming and just wanted IJ to go down there).

But I am soft as warm butter in China east of the above-mentioned line - and he is pushing there.

So currently two major problems I have to solve is a) how to bring my troops back into play and b) how to protect eastern China from being overrun.

Obvert has been using his bombers (including heavies) to hurt troops in open hexes, and he has created blocking strong plocking positions in open hexes to keep my Burma army from breaking through.

So let's see how it goes.

I am still trying to find my way into this game, thus no consistent AAR at least for now.

Still, I'd like to share a fragment or two at this point of time to let those of you who do not have first hand experience in this period of the game get some impressions as well.

Initially, I thought this would be similar to playing as Chinese in 42. Now, I think it's worse [X(]. Concentrated Allied air power is quite lethal.

E.g., this turn two units at Hengyang were eliminated, followed by a paradrop - which happened to fail because a fresh unit just entered the hex, but if this drill is repeated next turn, it will be eliminated as well.

It is one of the strongest units I found in the vicinity. I do not have significant AV in the entire region. That's why I said above that I am soft as butter in China.

No AFV - well, it's an IJ Type C MntG/Inf division, which does not have any in its (weak) TOE. It is 35 exp and 57 morale, at about 60% of the TOE strength, and was moving into te hex in reserve mode, so that may explain the adjusted AV.

The exp 98 morale 99 units are still marching east from Burma, but I haven't found a good way how to bring them back into play so far.
