Saving map as .mal file broken?
Saving map as .mal file broken?
Saving a map as a .mal file doesn't seem to work: I've tried saving a map as a .mal file about twenty times, but nothing happens...no error is reported, but no file is created either. This is pretty weird, because I have several .mal files that I created last year. Has anyone else encountered this?
RE: Saving map as .mal file broken?
I thought I read someplace that this was no longer going to be supported. It was all xml now. I could be wrong.

RE: Saving map as .mal file broken?
hmm, thanks, interesting...you can in fact export maps as an xml file (.mml file); I've exported one but not re-imported to see if it works correctly... Maybe the .mal files I have from last year were created before the last patch, dunno...ORIGINAL: Lobster

I don't care if they allow saving maps via XML .mml file instead of .mal file, but it sure it be helpful if they'd remove the .mal option from the file menu in that case!

Unfortunately this is a recurring problem. Maybe some day someone will do the right thing and turn this game over to someone who really cares.

RE: Saving map as .mal file broken?
Odd that they are adding new features like "hierarchy" (whatever that is) when basic stuff like this needs fixing... Hopefully hierarchy will be optional, because if the past is anything to go by, it will be buggy and won't be fixed for years, if ever.

If you have a problem I suggest you seek out an anger management program instead of obsessing over it. This is a thread about a TOAW problem and it's roots. There has been more than one time where an obsolete function has been present in the drop down menus that has not been removed. Removing an obsolete menu item is a simple matter and not doing so would seem to demonstrate a lack of caring about how the game appears to a user. Needless to say it also sows confusion because it gives the appearance of a bug.
@76mmNot saying the .mal file function was removed for certain but I recall something being said. You'll have to ask Bob. But it isn't working for me either with the latest release version. I never discard old versions, just rename them. So I go back to the last version where something worked and use that. You gotta do what you gotta do.

When the average thread poster is being humorous this is usually the proper method: [:D] [;)] [:)] [8D] or even [:'(]. However, considering your previous replies and my lack of mind reading abilities your response is reasonably taken only as a poke with a sharp stick. Just as your response above.

Hierarchy is nothing more than chain of command. A .mal file is a file of the map that used to be created with the 'Save Map As' item in the scenario editor under the File menu item. You could then load the map into the editor minus any units, events, etc.

Perhaps one chooses not to use such childish "whatever they ares"? Perhaps you surmise that I should be in a second childhood. I'm not. I will leave such childishness to your own imagination.

Gentlemen, GENTLEMEN, I know it is a good sign when fans start slapping each other around when done in good fun,
but outright rancor is really a turn off, especially to new users.

He attempted to hijack a thread I had about my scenario progress (which is probably in the wrong subforum) and I asked him not to so now he is having a tantrum. But yeah, I have nothing more to say about it. [;)]

Well, there are some bits of the game that are for certain fully functional, so that needs to be addressed, we cannot have bugs just in unecessary things like the editor.
RE: Saving map as .mal file broken?
Sorry, don't really understand what you mean. But for me, the editor is hardly "unnecessary"--editor features are a key feature for me when buying a game, and I generally won't buy one at all that does not have full editor. For many games I can say that I spend more time playing around with the editor than playing the game.ORIGINAL: jmlima

But my main point isn't that every single bug should be removed from the editor, but that it seems to me that low-hanging fruit--such as removing menu items that don't actually do anything--should be addressed much more quickly than it is.
RE: Saving map as .mal file broken?
I think perhaps he is being sarcastic. [;)]
BTW, if I recall correctly you can remove those things that no longer work yourself. Just edit EnglishGameText.xml and do a find for Save Map As. Remove it using a null string.

Sounds like a very bad comment to make, eh?
