Recon level

Warplan is a World War 2 simulation engine. It is a balance of realism and playability incorporating the best from 50 years of World War 2 board wargaming.

Recon level

Post by Meteor2 »

I think, it would be useful, to have something similar to supply for recon, too.
Maybe colours or numbers.

Then, it would be easier to see, where subs in the Atlantik are more vulnerable and detectable.
Due to land based aircraft and electronic advancements this should vary in the different regions.

Especially in the new PTO I would like the feature a lot and maybe its absolutely necessary then.

The information panel gives you that.

But I will put a toggle for that on my list.

Thanks Alvaro.
A toogle for an overview is an improvement (especially for the water hexes in the Pacific).

And by the way, what are the main factors, influencing the level?
- land units in the surrounding
- coverage from air units (= range of nearest friendly air base)?
- technology level (= radar, decryption, deciphering, radio direction finding)?

It is a simple model. The closer a unit is to your shore the better chance it has to be spotted on your turn.

So if the UK go to Toronto to hit Italian ships it will have a hard time finding.

But if the Italian fleet sails outside Port Said they will be easily found.

Modifiers are fleet size and carriers when trying to engage an enemy.

Large fleet has more search planes. Carriers have more search planes.

Thanks for the answer.
Do you think, that this is sufficient in the Pacific?
Should radio Interceptions and so on (= electronics), play a far more important roll there?
Or spotters on islands to a small extent?

It is assumed there are search planes or coastal spotters.

Why only assumed?
I think, that spotter planes are of major importance in the Pacific.
I remember games, where this was an active and unique roll, beside fighters, bombers or torpedo bombers.

And, als I mentioned, radio interception and electronic warfare. It would be a less impressive
idea to "see" Japanese carriers as icons from a distance of 2000 miles.
They should be nearly "invisible" for most of the time on their route.

Do you want to micromanage recon? Believe me it will get tiresome. Thus why it is automatic. You don't want to have to do a specific function in a game that is a must/always or lose kind of function unless it is a core function like production. And that function is very simple and easy.

Doing recon on your own would be a nightmare and an absolute decision.

Right now I am just working the PTO map and have not put thought into anything else in coding except debugging the current game.
