Trying to make a campaign (copy of Europe 1939)

Post by PanzerMike »

Okay, I am a little mystified by the editor and how to create a new Campaign based on a copy of the Europe 1939 campaign. I am reading the Scenario modding manual, but I do no quite follow. This is what I think I am supposed to do:

#1 Start the game, Editor -> select scenario ('Europe 1939') -> Start -> File/Quit -> type in new scenario name ('Europe 1939 Panzer') -> Save. This will create the new .scn name and folder for the scenario name given under the WarPlan\Campaigns folder.
Comment: I see them (both the new "Europe 1939 Panzer" folder and the new Europe 1939 Panzer.scn). So this works

#2 Go back to the “Data” tab and save all the data from there. It will save to the WarPlan\UserSavedData folder. Now you have a backup of all the scenario data. Now you have a new copy of the scenario you want to change. You have all the data saved in the user data area.
Comment: I see a button "Data" in the editor. It opens a screen that reads "Read & Load Sata" (I presume Sata is a typo). There is a LOT of buttons on this screen. This is where I am confused.
Question 1) What am I supposed to do on this screen?
Question 2) And what exactly is the purpose of the \UserSavedData folder? I see a lot of .dat and .txt files in that folder. But there is only one such folder, not one for a each Campaign.

#3 Copy all the files under the WarPlan\Campaigns\Scenario copied folder (the 'Europe 1939' folder I presume)\ into the WarPlan\Campaigns\name of your scenario folder.
[ Comment: this I think I understand, copy all files from 'Europe 1939' to 'Europe 1939 Panzer'. The copied files can now be altered for the 'Europe 1939 Panzer' scenario, without screwing up the other campaigns ]

#4 The New Scripts Folder "WarPlan\Campaigns\New Scenario Scripts\"
Comment: this folder contains a number of .txt files (and a bunch of .png files, which we will ignore for now).
Question 3) Am I supposed to something here? Rename this folder? Copy paste something?

#5 The new data folder "WarPlan\Campaigns\New Scenario Data\". Copy paste them into a new scenario you are making. They are the default settings for Europe 1939
Comment: This folder contains a bunch of .txt and .dat files.
Question 4) Copy paste what to where? All the files to "\WarPlan\Campaigns\Europe 1939 Panzer"? I do not see any of these files in the existing Campaign folder though? So, what do I do here?

So far I have only performed step #1, skipped #2, and did #3. Then I stopped, because I am confused at this point. I do not want to mess up my install. Maybe it is obvious to some you smarter people. However, the manual is too vague at his point for silly ole me.

Help appreciated!

P.S. This thread probably belongs to the Modding subforum, but I am guessing it gets more exposure in the main forum, so sorry about that.

If you just want to modify the game to your flavor simply copy the script files from Europe 1939 to Europe 1939 Panzer folder

If you want to chance something under the Data menu items like say terrain names. Save the current names... go to the UserSavedData folder and change what you want in the file there then import it up.

The UserSavedData folder is a temporary hold spot for importing and dumping data when in the editor.

As long as we are asking do we have to load all the files on the quit/file menu and scripts if modding the 39 scenario?

All I do is load the scenario in editor make the changes I want on map and to Countries and then file quit save with new name.
Favoritism is alive and well here.

You can do this and it will keep the current scripts in memory. But if you modify the map it might affect some scripts because they use locations for defense, movement, garrison, and objectives.
