Best use of CVE ?

Post by Terrific T »

Hi,

I don't understand the use of this ships:
- just transport airplanes from bases to other bases ?
- Airgroups can fly air missions when they are based on them ?
- when they're at sea, can you transfer planes from CVE to CV or CVL ?
- Can we use CVE to protect transport TF ?

Thanks !

The CVEs that arrive with air groups are fully functional carriers. The ones that arrive without groups are transports only, good for moving planes from port to port.

One, the Long Island is strongly suspected of being haunted. A number of players, myself included, have reported squadrons disappearing from this ship, never to be seen again. Just send this fellow back to Pearl when it arrives.

There have been numerous discussions about this before, suggest you search the history and read the old threads.

Think the matter has been 'discussed out' ;)

No matter which board I go to, whether its hunting, shooting, photography, or wargaming, there is always a topic that comes up that might have been "discussed out" by the veteran board users. Maybe for those of us new to the game this would have been a useful topic. You aren't required to post to it, just give us a chance to post as we see fit.

Cve

Hi, The CVE with airgroups are quite usefull in hunting IJN subs or flying CAP over transports. Just don't try to slug it out with IJN fleet carriers.
Late in Campaigns they make nice aircraft way points.
After the threat of long range attack has diminished you can park a few in mid Coral Sea and fighter/carrier bomber type groups can fly to them
one turn and on to the next base the turn after. (You can string a line of them and move groups between bases like Shortlands and Noumea
Since base space is always limited it is better to send tired groups back and bring in fresh ones. (High morale)

Thanks Mogami  , I hadn't considered this use.

BTW, a search for "CVE" on the forum didn't result in too many hits, so your help above was very useful for the newbies like me.

Thanks also for the helpful suggestions in many other threads. Good to see that an expert recognises that not everyone has been around since the start. ;)

I found a good use for those US CVE's without airgroups (like LI) is to include them in air combat TF's to function as an additional low value target.
Some IJN pilots always seem to go after them and if they absorb one or two hits that would have otherwise knocked the Sara out of the battle the CVE has fully acomplished its mission and is granted a leave to Pearl to get some AA upgrades.

Other than that it is pretty annoying to wait for much needed reinforcements to stem the IJN tide and all you get from Pearl is the Long Island...

Yes well the only thing the Long Island is useful for, is that when it is sent out it comes with some fresh DD's and a CL or two as support.

I just lost the Long Island in one of my games...
Sent it ahead of my 6 US cv's - took several full Jap strikes and went down with all hands. Served her purpose as a decoy though.

Wish I had read these posts before. I just tried to use Long Island as a close cover carrier for my Guadalcanal landings. At least now I know I won't have to play around settings to get her to launch those Wildcats to provide CAP. I guess I will load this game a few days before I found my main invasion force roughed up by a sucession of air raids from Rabau.

Marc aka Caran...

P.S.: Is ship class data hard coded into the game? I tried to look for differences between a CV and CVE game wise, but the classes are obviously not loaded by the scenario editor (with a lot of other data).
