AA Flanking Manuvers: Any Ideas ?

Post by Severe »

I am new to AA and have a question about flanking manuvers. The game implies that separating units from the main HQ would cause penalties [which is understandable] but is'nt this something that you must do if you want to flank the enemy or is there someway you can tell the super HQ to have a unit do this. I do believe flanking is a great strategy but would like to carry it out properly. open to suggestions.

thanks Severe

I must admit that I am no expert on order delays. I usually try to keep units close to their organic HQ units. (Occassionally, I violate that either to rebalance task forces or conduct long range recon with a single fast moving unit like ACs or Stuarts.)

I try to mainly deploy the senior HQ on the map with reserve and rear elements. Often the senior HQ ends up situated with a massive arty fire base and in charge of local security for the fire base. I tend to strip my big guns and build one or two big fire bases. This allows you to provide them better security ...

I hope that helps.

PS: I don't know if that is realistic. Golf33 could tell you as he is a former arty officer.

I do exactly the same thing. It also prevents the artillery getting drawn into 'close-quarter' fighting with the rest of its organic unit - something that used to happen in RDOA but should not occur in HTTR so I believe.

Severe,

There is a tremendous amount of flexibility in what you can do in AA:HTTR. By all means you can order a single unit, Bn HQ, Bde HQ or Div HQ to conduct a flank Move or Attack. Don't get too concerned with the orders delay penalties. There is usually enough slack in the system to allow for what I would term "normal" manouvres. Most HQs have spare command capacity so that they can handle extra support units.

When the player gives a direct order he will use the command capacity of the nearest HQ in the chain of command to the force being ordered. So if you want to order a Bn to flank right on an enemy blocking your Bde's progress, it will refer to the Bde HQ and determine the orders delay using it's values. Sure there will be some delay. But it's not going to be too massive.

The AA engine is designed to simulate operational manouvre warfare. If this is what you get off on, then you'll be in seventh heaven my friend. :)
