Scenario Brief: Tough Old Gut -- Salerno, Italy -- September 1943

Force Level
: Medium

Complexity: Medium

Advantage
: Axis

Groundscale
: Each hex = 2500 meters

Historical Background: The battle of Salerno was fought as part of the Italian campaign between 9-16 September 1943. On 9 September, the 5th (US) Army landed on the west coast of Italy in the vicinity of the port city of Salerno. This operation was known as AVALANCHE and consisted of the US 6th Corps and the X (UK) Corps. The purpose of this operation was threefold. First, eliminate Italy from the war. Second, tie down German forces. Third, capture the major port city and naval base at Naples.

Mission
: British X Corps was the main effort with the primary objectives of seizing Salerno, capturing the Montecorvino Airfield, and gaining control of the mountain passes that provided access to the north and Naples. The mission of 6th (US) Corps was to protect the right flank of X (UK) Corps.

"A cross-channel operation [in 1943] was utterly impossible. We could not even get across without the British showing us the way and taking us by the hand. We did not have the means. And so it was decided that we would take this matter up with Mr. Churchill, which we did. And that is where his persuasive eloquence first impressed me. He got up before a map with his pointer and he kept pointing to Gibraltar, North Africa, the Mediterranean, Sicily and Italy. Finally he said, 'We should slit the soft belly of the Mediterranean.' Well, my friends, I assure you, when I landed at Salerno, I found it was a tough old gut!" -- General Mark W. Clark, Commander US 5th Army

Enemy Forces. The German 10.Armee consists of two panzerkorps each with three divisions. The XIV.Panzerkorps has 16.Panzerdivision providing the initial defense of the Salerno beaches. In addition, the LXXVI.Panzerkorps will arrive from the south with the 26.Panzer Division and the 3. and 29.Panzergrenadier-Divisions. Time Available.

In the graph below, we see that the Allied unit on the map outnumber the Axis units until about GT9. From this we can conclude that the Allies need to push hard and fast to attain their objectives. The Axis Player needs to make hang on to key terrain to facilitate offensive operations later in the game.

Things You Don't Need to Know About Salerno:

* XIV.Panzerkorps, 3., 15., and 29.Panzergrenadier-Divisions, and 16.Panzer Divisions were units that were all destroyed in the Stalingrad Pocket at the end of January 1943. These organizations were resurrected in early 1943 using the returned-to-duty (sick/wounded/on-leave) personnel from the original units and a whole horde of new replacements.

* The new commander of XIV.Panzerkorps was General Hermann Balck. Balck commanded the 11.Panzer "Gespenster [Ghost]" Division in the Battles along the Chir River in support of 4.Panzerarmee's attempts to relieve the Stalingrad garrison in December 1942.

* General Mark W. Clark, Commander, 5th (US) Army, was the youngest four-star general in the United States Army during World War II. Post-WWII, Clark commanded UN forces in Korea until the armistice was signed on July 27, 1953.

* Darby's Rangers suffered a devastating defeat at the Battle of Cisterna during the Anzio Campaign in January-February 1944. Due to heavy losses the Ranger Regiment was disbanded. Darby was killed in action 30 April 1945 by artillery fire; he was 34 years old. A movie, "Darby's Ranger's", was released in 1958 that dramatized the exploits of Darby and his Rangers.

I'll guess the release of update 1.0.4 will be on/about 16 December (likely) or on/about 23 December (less likely). After that? Sometime after the New Year. One way or the other, St. Ruth and I have submitted our work and we have moved on to Stalingrad. We'll see you on the objective.

I'm working up an updated version of this scenario based on player feedback. Here's what I have so far:

* 16.PzD units now start the game FIXED for one turn (GT1).
* Corrected countername errors for 16.PzD.
* Removed 215.Pz Bn from the scenario; unit did not arrive until after the conclusion of the Salerno scenario.
* Reduced Attack Factor of German artillery units by 50%.
* HQ./104.PzGren Regt now arrives in the correct location on the north side of the map (i.e. in the same place as its subordinate units).
* All reconnaissance battalions have been broken down into companies/squadrons. Recce Movement Factors increased from 18 to 21.

If you've played this scenario and have additional feedback--I'm all ears.
