Nothing to do with WitP but a story I thought would be funny to tell and maybe some of you have had similar.

Last week I was doing a total system redo, bought a new Ryzen 7 3700x with new mobo some DDR4 memory and a new GTX 1660 Ti GPU.

So there I am assembling it all together and what flies out of my hand?? My brand new 3700x chip!!!,drops on the floor and bends around 20 of the pins (OMFG!!!,THE WIFES GOING TO KILL ME)
So ever so calmly I pick it up and get a coin collectors magnifying glass which I have because my eyes have trouble seeing close up. So not only are the pins all bent but thermal grease is all over the pins as well.

I get a toothpick and while holding the magnifier,gently scrape the grease from inside the pins,then since I,m old school I have the old style flat blade shaving razor blades...
I proceed to ever so gently feed the blade under and between the bent pins and ever so gently bending them back up straight.
An hour and a half later its ready to test...
Result:New MOBO says I have a Ryzen 7 3700x chip 8 core 16 thread...

My daughter tripped and fell forward while trying to avoid the elderly and frail Jack Russel Terrier that was trying to tell her it was time to be fed. She stopped herself from going all the way to the floor by putting her hands out and hitting the table....and the 20oz bottle of Lipton Pureleaf Tea. The tea bottle tipped over and dumped a significant amount of it's contents onto the keyboard of may laptop which promptly stopped running.

My second reaction was quick enough to stifle the colorful metaphors from coming out of my mouth. I thought my only computer was gone. I dried the offending liquid {and my tears} and went to take a nap knowing that I would be dreaming about not playing AE {Nightmares!}. I got up, my little girl came over to apologize and I sat with her and watched Mulan and Mulan II.

I decided I might as well give the computer a try. It was already fried as far as I knew.

It started up just fine and ran for two more years before the MB died as the graphics card was finally unable to run new titles.

I think your story beats mine. I didn't have to bend a bunch of pins back into some semblance of order. I have two more that compare but neither involve computers.

It is not clear form the text. Did you accidentally overclock your CPU? [:D]

Seriously, once upon a time it was possible to get a higher rate CPU by using a usual graphite pencil in a particular way. I did it myself in my student days

But I did it somewhere in the 2000-01. think it was AMD Athlon. Used the CPU for a couple of years after that without problems. The possibility was one of the factors in my decision to buy AMD in the first place. We built our own rigs then and had a lot of choice.

I suspect that speed gain was not that big after all, but damn it felt good to be a gangsta!

I ordered a new system over the last couple of weeks. I did not go with a Ryzen 7 3700X.

I went, instead, with an Intel i5-9600KF. Or at least I thought I did. The packaging showed i5-9600KF. The sticker on the box says i5-9600KF.

The stamp on the CPU itself says i9-9900KF.

I haven't booted the machine up yet, but I would be really shocked if the stamp on the CPU core was wrong. Somebody in an Intel factory may have given me a better CPU by mistake. I assume if I ever had issues that a warranty might cover, I might have some trouble claiming warranty benefits, but I've never had a CPU go wrong.

Manufacturers also have the ability to degrade a chip's performance by disabling some features, i.e., the Celeron line. Could they have done this with your chip?

Back to Luck...

While living in Atlanta about 20 years ago, where the beltway doubles as a NASCAR track each weekday morning and evening (relevant point, I'm getting there...), noticed a co-worker broken down by the side of the road while on the way home. Early days of cell phones when not every 4th grader had one so looped around at the next exit, pull up behind him to see if I could help.

Our two cars are well off the freeway mostly parked into the grass, he and I are standing on the grass side of the cars - not the freeway side, chatting about the value of carrying a cross tip screwdriver or some other repair nonsense...when I gal just randomly runs off the highway behind us, at full speed, goes around both the cars, in the grass, so close to us would could have touched her car... never hit the brakes, never slowed down, swerved back on the road and continued on her way. It was over in a second or two. She had to be going well over 60 mph.

We just stood there dumfounded looking at each other slowly realizing what just happened...

If you've ever seen Monty Pyton's movie The Life of Brian, that was my "...you lucky bastard..." moment.

As I understand it, the labeling applies to hardware features that software/dip switches can't change. What software can do with locking/unlocking and overclocking/degrading may or may not be labeled. Please correct me if I'm off base here.
