Pacific map questions

Post by Grotius »

I'm enjoying the game so far, but I've got a few map questions.

1. First, I'm puzzled by the depictions of US vessels printed on the map in the Pacific and in the Caribbean. There's a ring of US ships, spaced apart, printed on these portions of the map. What does this signify? It doesn't seem to mean convoys.

2. Also, I've noticed that there are deliberate distortions in sizes of various Pacific islands. E.g., Oahu is bigger than the Big Island of Hawaii; New Caledonia and Guadalcanal are larger than life; etc. I'm guessing that this is to give us more meaningful terrain to fight over for invasions and such. I actually rather like it, but I want to make sure I'm understanding it.

3. Finally, is there any way to scroll the map from east to west, from Atlantic to Pacific? Right now one has to click on one edge of the minimap to see the western US, and move all the way to the other edge to see the eastern US.

Thanks for a great game!

Hi Grotius

1. This represents the Pan-American Security Zone, details of which can be found in the Strategy Guide (page 13 of the 1939 World at War Strategy Guide), and you can access the Guide for whichever campaign you're playing from one of the buttons at the top right of the screen.

2. Oahu needs to have lots of ports, hence the size.

3. I'm afraid not, is using the minimap is probably the quickest way to go to whichever side of the US you want to go to.

Thanks for the quick reply, Bill! The strategy guide explains everything about the ship icons. Interesting!

Now I have a new map question! I'm trying to sail a British cruiser west from South America to Australia. I put the cruiser on the hex that says "To Pacific, One turn," but it just sits there. I recall reading something about it in the manual, but I searched on "edge" and "map" and couldn't find it. I've tried right-clicking the cruiser; nothing happens. Maybe I have it on the wrong hex? Or am I supposed to sail it right up to the map edge?

Hi

What you would be looking for in the Manual would be a mention of a Loop.

In terms of how it works, when you press End Turn the script will fire and send your naval unit on on its journey to the Pacific, where it should arrive in the following turn.

Thanks. I'll re-read that bit of the manual. I'm clearly doing something wrong. Will report back!

I'm still having trouble moving a unit from the west map edge to the east map edge. I put the unit, a British cruiser, on the hex that says "1 turn." Should I instead put it on the hex that says "to Pacific"? Can I put it in any of the highlighted hexes? Do I have to right-click it or something? It just sits in the same hex, turn after turn. What am I doing wrong? Is it possible this is a bug? Happy to send a saved game if need be.

It needs to be placed on one of the highlighted hexes, so it probably just needs moving onto one of those and then off it will go.

Ah OK, I was putting it on the hexes with the words, rather than the highlighted hexes. It finally made the journey to the other side of the world. Thanks. :)
