Finally. A bit of luck went my way against the KB!

The S-35 tracked down the KB and moved in, launched a spread of four and hit CV Hiryu with three of them! Wish I had a pic but I don't have the replay now. So good to get one down, as the Dutch KXIV hit her just after with another single torpedo. She was in the same hex, so I doubt that Hiryu has made it. Losses confirm with 31 A6M2 and 2 Vals lost on the ground.

The KB has lost a lot of strike planes in the last few turns so this makes good sense.

Elsewhere the SBDs form the Aleutians that have moved into Shikuka nailed a bunch of transports near Toyohara today. Nice to get those. The noose is tightening everywhere.

Naha looks manageable and I'll start attacking very soon once all is unloaded and disruption is down.

Boyant form the sinking of Hiryu, the Allies push ahead with more troops into Amami Oshima and Naha, and begin pounding them both by air and sea two soften up the defences.

Simultaneously the advance down the Manchurian coastline toward Korea is picking up speed. The Soviets crush resistance at Antung and will let the armour fly ahead toward Heijo. The goal is Genzen on the East coast of Korea to isolate the peninsula and cut off any potential reinforcement from Manchuria. It doesn't look like he's moving any troops out of Mukden, Anshan, or other large concentrations in Manchuria. I also don't see Fusan or Moppo increasing in numbers to meet the challenge from the South.

These two turns go to the Japanese. Again Lowpe shows that when he's down he's at his most dangerous. The IJN sortied for a risky play near the concentrated fleet at Naha. I'd just sent back three surface combat TFs and the carriers to Miyako-Jima, and had only a token force protecting the unloading convoy there. Luckily only one old CL is lost, the Caradoc, and one BB damaged, the Idaho. She'll need yard time for a few months of course, which hurts. She and Mississippi went toe to toe with Kirishima and Fuso and held their own at least.

On the Japanese side Kirishima might need to get into dry-dock as well. They also lost one very good modern DD, the Teruzuki.

On the 23rd the Japanese jump some strikes against ground troops in Manchuria and get to the Il-2s. Almost 50 lost not he day which is very bad. I'll stand down all air up here since it's not really needed right now anyway. The troops move forward again easily and next stop is Heijo.

A very good two days for the Allies. More landings at Amami Oshima gave just enough of an advantage to get a 2:1 on the first attack. This will not take long now. This base is key to the next stage, which is an invasion of the Home Islands. All troops are already prepped for undisclosed invasion points, but the situation will still need a lot of preparation, air suppression and naval interdiction.

In Korea Heijo falls to a massive Soviet army on the first attack, as does Antung. Now the tanks will speed toward Genzen.

The 4Es have been sitting idle in Shanghai, upgrading, repairing, and I've also accumulated most of the best 2E there as well. Nagasaki is in range for the 2E and everything from Hiroshima west is on the menu for the 4Es. Strat bombing will begin to get serious now. [;)]

On the 26th Amami Oshima falls to the first DA here after some lengthy preparation. That is huge. Support troops and base forces will now move in.

On the 27th Naha falls, again a major achievement in landing against a heavily fortified defensive target close in to the Japanese Home Islands. Naga will be a thorn for a while, but all real resistance and potential use of these bases is ended with this result.

Now for the next steps. The small islands near Kyushu have long been targets, and I've had troops prepping for months to land there, but the Japanese have reinforced, some with large defensive base forces with DP guns and solid ground forces. This will take more than I had hoped, but that's the nature of this attempt to do operations usually conducted in 45 in 43.

The USA 32nd ID finally takes Davao from the tough defending units on Mindanao. It has been prepping for Tokyo Retto, the outermost island, and can now move up to take on that job. I've got more units recently used in the Marianas which have been switched to prep for these islands and are now traversing. It all just takes so much time!

Meanwhile tanks are nearing Genzen and the cutoff of all Manchurian troops from Korea. There is currently only one unit in that base, which is the static fort. If nothing rails in over the next two days these armoured units will take it easily and open the entire Korean Peninsula to a quick and decisive conquest.

On the 28th I'll immediately begin putting more pressure on the Kyushu bases from several angles. A bit risky, but should be interesting. [;)]

I don't think you will 'need" Hellcat's in '43, but they won't hurt. With the whole of southern HI within range of your beasties, he won't have any economy left in 60 days. After that it is just a slog fest to finish. The killer for the IJ is that almost every important base is coastal and therefore susceptible to Naval Bombardment. This lack of shelter for the IJ air is a real issue.

This lack of shelter for the IJ air is a real issue.

I do and will need them. Beasts in daylight will still get crushed by the large supported groups in all of the big Home Island bases, and night strikes can hit industry but only slowly, and mostly manpower. I also will not use them to hit airfields at night other than in small nuisance strikes. It wasn't possible, so I won't use it as my leverage to wreck Japanese airfields.

At this point I have literally two full and two half full groups of P-38 to sweep with, two 18 plane groups of Corsairs, and that's it. The MiGs are shot (only about 30 left) and there is nothing else that consistently can get an advantage over a large number of Tojo and Jack defenders. The P-40K is a good additional airframe for LR CAP, some sweeping and escort, but not a primary sweeper. Wildcats and Hurris are okay to add in but not on their own. Early Spits are better defensively than offensively.

Hellcats will provide a versatile, sturdy, hard hitting and plentiful service 1 option for the next 6 months if needed. I like that in this game the Hellcat will make an immediate and useful addition to the Allied cause.

Strat bombing is just beginning in earnest, and I hope to get to 10k points after a few months. With no additional fuel for the past 6 months, depleted industry and air forces, and an embattled IJN, it'll be tough for the Japanese, but they still have teeth.

My goal is to land on the Home Islands within the next month. [;)]

On the 28th several naval units surge ahead and tackle Home Island bases on Kyushu for the first time!! Two cruiser led TFs hit Kagoshima and Kummamoto, while DDs ineffectively hit Kanoya. Sweeps and 4E bombardments finish the job during the day, and the Japanese suffer big losses to the air power. The 4Es also locate CA Mikuma and drop no less than 15 500lb bombs on her, leaving her on fire in Kagoshima. They also hit another precious DD with four bombs, likely putting her out of action for a good while.

On the Korean Peninsula the capture of Genzen seals the fate of the IJA. No more reinforcements can come from Manchuria now, and tanks will surge down the Eastern coastline while other troops march on Keijo.

A shot of the main area of combat lately.

I'll keep putting pressure on the Kyushu bases as the Soviets and combined Allied forces march down Korea and begin to transport more and more across the Yellow Sea.

Trying to really get to work on Strat bombing now from Shanghai and soon with additional fields in Korea for more 2E. It's so interesting to try these 45 tasks in 43. Not nearly so easy to cause damage, but the NF aren't here yet either so he has to use all kinds of other 1E and 2E day planes at night. Damage does accumulate as long as I keep fires going for a few days.

A few invasions are imminent, most notably Iwo Jima and Daito Shoto. I plan to move as far as I can toward Tokyo on the Central Pacific island path and to shore up my LOC with Daito. Both atolls so I have to be careful.

A few sweeps here and there are testing the waters and getting good success still over the Home Islands. I can't wait to get some airfields in Southern Korea and get 200-300 planes on one target.

No detection yet on my approaching ships. There are a lot here, so this is a bit of a risk so close tot eh Home Islands. It's even within extreme range for the G3M3 Nell, but none of my subs have had detection, so if I can sneak in then Iwo will allow me air cover for the next two at Haha and Chichi.

A huge set of turns as advances are made in all vectors.

Keijo falls in Korea to give the Allies a great base for the future, and now the door is open to the road to Fusan. Tanks are already moving to the bases between and will strike several of them within two days.

I also crushed the defense at Moppo with 4Es and 2Es fro mShanghai, then used one of the large LRP para units on it, taking the base easily, without a loss!

At Iwo the troops easily storm the beaches, take few casualties' and destroy all of the Japanese resistance. No air or naval strikes challenge the ships here, but I'll take no chance and send most back to Pagan only half unloaded.

I've been targeting Fukuoka lately since it has the largest Manpower in range plus a large industrial and resource base. Fires get over 50k on the 4th, so lets see after a few days what the place looks like. The before shot is posted below.

A really interesting thing happened completely by mistake up North. A group of six USN fleet subs was transferring to Shanghai to set up shop and go out on patrol. The trouble is they were AI routed through the very well known minefield at Hakodate! (and of course would also have to transit the Tsushima strait).

The insetting part is that they were in one TF and only one sub took a mine, while the others proceeded to make multiple wolf-pack like attacks against the many targets in the area. One, the Tinosa, attacks in both phases, too. This is more like it! The Sunfish should also be fine after a month in the yards, so altogether a very interesting discovery. Maybe wolf-packs do work! (Something else I need to test).

Daito Shoto is invaded and taken easily in a shock. Lots of sweeps head over Kyushu and do well against solid IJ CAP.

Taiden also falls to the forward tank army, giving the Allies a great airbase on the Korean peninsula. I'll begin sending base forces and engineers immediately.

Lots of sweeps over these three days. Corsairs work Southern Kyushu to good effect. Lightnings, P-40K and Hurry IIC with some Spit VC go for Fusan as troops near it. I'd like to prevent a mass exodus of remaining Japanese forces that could be picked up here so it's important to kill the CAP and threaten the airspace. Overall it works well.

An invasion is nearing a landing at Haha-Jima, but one TF went a day early and let off a few unfortunate engineers and soldiers. They were roughed up, but some of the troops are still on the ships so they'll continue on the 10th with everyone else. At least the Japanese also took some damage from the landing and shouldn't be in great shape for the real deal.

Strat bombing is sporadic with weather interfering over several bases.
