I now have three data points for The Worm*.
I will put this chart up on the first of each month to show the points comparison and changes to the AV ratio over time.
The critical Victory Point ratio worm (orange) will show how the war is going, which side has the momentum and possibly the point that the IJ high water mark is reached.

This is the current situation in NCAA.

MGA are closing in on Lanchow from the east.
12th Army are moving NW from Sian to meet up with them. 12th Army will then revert to defensive operations.
HQ 20th Army, all Divisions temporarily attached from Kwantung Army (grey backgrounds) and all Tank Regts will then move to the Changsha area. They won't try to attack west across the slow roads to Kienko.
1st Army remains on the defence around Tsiaotso.

11th Army will threaten Changsha with HQ, 34,39,40th Divs with 3rd and 6th moving to the assault river crossing site. 13th Div is holding the road Nanyang-Sian and will join this attack as soon as it is replaced.

Current situation and future plans for Burma Area Army

Arakan Front: Cox's Bazaar has a division defending it so 54th Div is advancing overland. This will also allow time for more supply convoys to move to Burma. I am about one week away from being able to buy 53rd Div out from Japan then about another 5-6 weeks for 52nd Div. If I capture Cox's Bazaar before then they will make their landings further north.

Central Burma: I'm seeing lots of RAF and USAAF bombers so am thinking about avoiding the open country by using the roads through rough terrain. 3rd Air Div will work to clear the allied air forces then start bombing the allied ground forces.
B17s are flying out of Calcutta, Chittagong and possibly Dacca.

Yunnan: Kunming airfield damage is reducing and should allow reinforcement by air now. The Raiding Regts and 4th IMR will need to hold out until 23rd Army can link up with them.

Current situation on Java.

25th Army with IG and 18th Divs helped to capture Batavia. I don't need this much force on Java now that the Batavia defenders were captured.
16th Army with 2nd, 4th and 38th Divs should be ample to capture the rest of Java.

IJN Southern Fleet is using Balikpapan as a refuelling and rearming base.

SNLFs are also excess to requirements on Java now. They will be used to capture the Celebes and the islands around the Banda Sea including Timor and Ambon plusestablish small bases to protect oil exports from Boela and Babo.
KB is about to leave Singapore for duty in SEAF. It will cover these SNLF operations on the way past in case the allies have some surprises lurking in the shadows off NW Australia.

5th Air Div isn’t needed to capture Soerabaja so it is staying at Mindanao before deploying to Timor.
22nd Air Flotilla will provide long range naval patrols from SW Sumatra, Java and Timor.

The situation in SEAF

Lots of movement by small SNLF Coys and IJNAF Coys, mainly using PB Ansyu conversions as “fast” transports and/or small xAKL with PB escort amphib task forces. Nothing too valuable as allied Cruisers are active and I expect BBs and CVs to pop out and say boo at any moment.

KB and 14th Army are en route to clear the allies from PNG.
KB will also conduct a fighting patrol as far as Sydney-Noumea-Fiji while fuel and ordnance lasts.

Naval Construction Bns are moving from Japan to establish air bases at Lae, then Buna and Milne Bay.

I’ve got a vague memory from reading something on the forum that level bomber pilots don’t like flying low level missions. Probably fair enough for the pilots to be a little put off being ordered to fly these obsolete unarmoured light bombers in an attack bomber role.

2 Mar 42 report

Post by jdsrae »

With the end of the amphib bonus coming up rapidly, I'm starting to think about where the front line will get to by the end of Mar 42 and what territory I should go after for the rest of 1942.

Going around the grounds counter-clockwise:
- General Defence Army. Lots of reserves ready to buy out as Political Points are saved. Some port building, but not much airfield or fort building yet.
- Kwantung Army. All is quiet on the Manchukuo Front, watching the Soviets and generally resting/training. Not much airfield or fort building in this theatre yet to try and save supplies for China ops.
- NCAA. With Sian captured NCAA will work to cut the allied troops in NW China off and then support the advance on Chungking by threatening the NE approaches.
- CEA (future 6th Area Army). Only a few days until the assault river crossing SW of Changsha. This will be reinforced as the main axis of advance to Chungking.
- Burma Area Army (currently only 15th Army). I'm not in a hurry to capture central or upper Burma but I will maintain contact and take advantage where I can. Keeping supply up in Burma is the constant challenge.

-25th Army has almost finished clearing Sumatra and has helped capture Batavia. On the expectation that 15th Army's advance is going to draw Indian Army reinforcements towards Calcutta/Bangladesh/Assam, there may be weak spots for 25th Army to exploit in Ceylon or Southern India. I would need KB to support that sort of operation. As a minimum I want to raid deep into the Indian Ocean and take some vacant bases with SNLF, but 25th Army could also conduct a larger scale raid.

- 16th Army has to clear Java then Timor, but the staff are already planning follow on NW Australia raids. If Darwin is lightly defended it will be captured but not strongly held. I feel that operations in the Perth area would need 25th Army and 16th Army to operate together and would need a concurrent threat to NE Australia (14th Army) to avoid reinforcements being moved across by rail.

- 14th Army will clear PNG then has options to either raid NE Australia or push into the South Pacific. I would like to try and capture Noumea and any allied forces there to delay any future allied advance, but I can't afford to commit a field Army and allow it to get bogged down somewhere against a strong allied defence..

- SNLF units will support raids in SWAF, Southern (Area) Fleet and SEAF areas.

- 4th Fleet will need to make do with SNLF units for the foreseeable future, but I may buy out an IJA Bde or Div from Japan to help SNLFs capture Wake Island.

- 5th Fleet (NEAF) is currently very quiet. Maybe too quiet. I have no major forces of any kind up there and haven't pushed anything into the Aleutians except subs. The allies seem quiet up here too though, with no evidence of forward bases being built yet. I am wary of a big allied drive across NorPac, so when NEAF reinforcements arrive I will push them forward into the ALeutians to try and provide some early warning of allied moves.

B-17D Fortress: 3 damaged – here’s hoping that some of these crash on the way home or have to be written off.

At any rate they generally take a while to get back into service as they are SR4 aircraft.

144th Infantry Regiment – still attached to 4th Fleet so I can’t recombine the 55th Div yet. Doing that is low on the priority list with so many units still to buy out of Japan.

In case your're not aware a Dev confirmed that a division operating as a whole should perform the same whether combined or not.

Ki-57-I Topsy upgrading to Ki-57-II Topsy at Hamamatsu – this was a mistake… I should have set the Topsy-I factories to not upgrade but hadn’t. I still have about 70x Ha-5 engines to use up and don’t want to make Topsy-IIs as they use Ha-31 engines… I changed the factory back to the Topsy-I just to use up the Ha-5 engines. That’s a waste of a few thousand supplies but not a show stopper.
Device Nakajima Ha-45 advances R&D to 7/43. I have 3x30 research factories on the Ha-45 so it will advance 90% every 30 days. That’s 17 months of time available so it should enter production in about 10 months or Jan 43.

4 Mar 42 report

Post by jdsrae »

The assault river crossing at Hengyang gets a 2:1 and drops forts to 1, but doesn't capture the city outright.
It won't take long to capture Hengyang, so it will be interesting to see if/how the nearby Chinese units react.
This is the state of the assault force straight after the river crossing.
19th Ind Mixed Bde took the brunt but will recover with few destroyed squads although all are disabled, while the other units are in pretty good shape.
The entire force will reorganise tomorrow and attack again the day after.

He will move troops from Chengteh to the forest hex N-W of Changsha, protecting the road to it.

In this case, you have two basic options: you put all your bombers on ground attack over chinese currently in chengteh in order to prevent the move and arrive first to the hex.
Or, you don't give a damn and continue marching N-W leaving a strong defence west of Changsha. You can perform a nice movement capturing Chihkiang and positions offbase leading to Kweyiang, which should be your real target since it opens the road to Chungking.

Now, having many chinese in both Chengteh and Changsha isn't optimal but you can control them quite easily. Also, there is the strong possibility of a chinese evacuation of the city once you put a random IndMixedBrigade on the road from Chengteh. Even if the hex is contested between you and the enemy, those poor bast@rds in Changsha cannot retreat.
You can therefore grind besieged troops and capture the city with little effort. In the meanwhile, you just defend your positions acquired thanks to your blitz toward Chihkiang and Kweyiang.

I did something similar in my current PBEM. Ended badly for the chinese who lost well over 350k infantry in the fights, 200k of these losses have been west of Changsha while he was trying to break out and reach his troops in Chihkiang. He defended Chihkiang with spare forces but they couldn't resist and so he ended up both losing those in Changsha and those in Chihkiang.
It was a well-prepared offensive. Over 550 2E in Hankow and more than 8,000AV available for me.

I suggest you to do an opportunistic attack on Liuchow-Tuyun axis, unless you have a plan to draw chinese reserves in Kweyiang area to the battlezone near Changsha and, therefore, you actually want them to use the railway.

Hengyang industry is captured intact, adding a little more supply and resources production to the grand total.
Chinese troops have already moved from Changteh to arrive in the rough hex NW of Changsha. It looks like 3 x big Chinese Corps.

7 Mar 42 report

Post by jdsrae »

The Royal Navy come out to dance on the Arakan coast and I miss them by a hex...

1. I had a task force on patrol with 4 x CA Mogami and 6 x DD Kagero one hex W of Akyab with 1 reaction range. I didn't post them on patrol at Akyab because i'd spotted a RN sub there...
2. The RN cruisers sailed straight past in the night and plastered Akyab. I've now set a few FP on night naval search to see if that helps
3. The RN withdraw over the top of I-24 and HMS Exeter pays the price for what looks like no DD escort. 3/12 torps fired hit the RN CA.
4. My best guess for where the RN cruisers were heading, but maybe back west to Ceylon. An IJN sub is ordered to patrol the approaches to Calcutta in case this same approach is repeated.

The rest of the RN is still unaccounted for, most likely near Ceylon but they could sortie east.

Only 10 points lost here, they had a few spare support squads on board but the main damage was the ~2000 supply that went down with these ships… I need that supply at Akyab, but more is on the way.

Taking 3 x torpedoes I am inclined to believe the skipper of the I-24. Decent payback for sinking a few thousand supply before it landed. I have 1xBB and 2xCA task forces within a few days sail of Akyab in case the allies try this again. That’s about half the RN cruiser strength in one task force, the others must be with the CV/CVL and R class BBs somewhere. Will they show up near the Burma coast or stay somewhere safe?
