Worm Spam Grrrrr

Ok I don't mind hearing about nasty stuff like worms and viruses, but worm and virus warning spam is too much damnit all.

I was using my Yahoo Messenger tonight, and had just opened my friend's web cam, and it activated a window claiming doom and gloom and that my system was about to shut down.

Well naturally that bothered me.

After a good deal later, I finally realised it said to click on the window, so I did thinking I had to find out whatever was going on.
And this window opened reliably each time I went to open a web cam while using Yahoo, so I think it is a condition particulkar to Yahoo IM.

Well it sent me to a web page claiming dire warnings about the SoBig.f worm etc etc.
I find out though, the web page is a frigging advertisement for software to protect me in the same way my firewall already is.

Friggin spam, is all it was.

I will say this much, I will not buy anything from these jerks regardless of what it might or might not do to protect me after this.
I am not impressed being stressed out over a scam of an advertisement exploiting a logical concern over a virus and or worm.

Right now, I have as little love for people clamouring about worms and viruses, as I do for the actual worms and viruses.

I mean really, there is a limit. I know how to prevent worms and viruses. And it basically uses the same logic as avoiding STDs for that matter.

Sorry for this post, it is late, and I have had my fill of hysteria about worms and viruses.
I don't get them, because I know how to avoid getting them.
Just wish I could avoid the hysteria about getting them as well.

As I understand you, it was a pop-up window, right? Get a pop-up stopper - that'll save you a lot of trouble. I'm using one and never get a pop-up I don't want.

The new version of Google has a pop up blocker. It works really well.

Here's a freeware pop-up stopper that I've been using for more than a year - simple, seems to work quite well.

As I think I've mentioned before, the newest version of Netscape (v7.1) has a pop-up stopper built in. (Please don't flame me regarding browsers - use whatever you want.)

Actually I have a pop up blocker resident plus the usual routine XP firewall.

Some nuisances are just hard to actually intercept.

I think though, what iritated me the most, was the nature of the popup.

A simple ad for their program would not have angered me, even if through a popup. But to masquerade as a legit warning, nope black listed that company instantly.

With my new XP system, I've through 2 or 3 popup stoppers before I settled with the seeming invincible one I have now (don't remember the name), but when I use my download software (Download Demon), the free version, it has one or two popups which neither my current or previous stopper will stop. I guess there's no such thing as a popup stopper which will kill popups that aren't generated via the internet.

The Google toolbar is surprisingly good at blocking popups. I was getting to the point of dumping IE and going with Mozilla just because of popups.
