Finnish WWII era 1:20 000 maps available in CDs!

Post by Perkele »

Hi there,

Big news for anyone making scenarios about Finnish efforts in WWII. Most of the such persons are probably Finnish and know this already, but in a case you missed it.

The National Land Survey of Finland (Maanmittauslaitos) has produced maps about the lost Karelian territory in four CDs. Those CDs contain most of the Karelian Isthmus and areas north of the Lake Ladoga. The maps are scanned from (pre)WWII era
originals. The 1:20 000 maps are scanned with 300 dpi.

The areas Finns conquered in '41 east the old border are not in those CDs. But army did surveyed them and those maps are available from archive in Pasila, Helsinki.

Go t o http://www.nls.fi/kartta/karjala/
and check it out yourself.

Unfortunately that page is in Finnish and the Swedish version the only other available. http://www.nls.fi/kartta/karjala/index_s.html

The cds cost 200 Finnish marks (per CD I think). That's little under 30 US dollars. I'm sure the email ( myynti@nls.fi ) given in the page can help if any of you English speakers wanna buy those.

I would say this is mighty impressive and any wargamer's wet dream come true. So any such CDs available from any other country? ;-)

Two of the example maps have the same name indeed. That is because of the way the Lady Finland has a grid laid over her and there is a number associated with every square. And those two cover the same area hence have to same number and name.

I now have to CDs and I think they are easily worth their price. The example pictures in the NLS site are in jpg format and are somewhat fuzzy when you zoom in. However the pictures are in tiff format in the CDs and are crystal clear when you zoom in. Only God knows why they have the fuzzy jpgs at their site. Bad advertising if you ask me.

But like I said, these CDs are great. Go and get them!

Oh and I 'm not associated with the production or selling of these CDs in any way.
