Increasing negative combat odds

Post by Christolos »

I have noticed that when attacking enemy ground units with air units that originayll had good attack odds, gradually get worse after several other air attacks took place first, even if those initial air attacks did damage.

For example, I had two air units, a Tac bomber with supply 5, 81% readiness, and 49% morale; and a Medium bomber with supply 5, 78% readiness, and 44% morale, that could each attack a Russian Guards Heavy tank unit at 2:1 odds. I chose to attack first with the Tac bomber which inflicted 1 damage and took 2. Then when I wanted to attack with the Medium bomber right after, and the odds jumped up to 7:1!

I have seen this many times in other similar situations (where several air units could do more damage attacking early only to have reduced odds when attacking the same unit that had already been attacked before by other air units.

Why do the odds get worse with repeated air attacks against the same ground unit? Is this WAD?

Hard to say without seeing the turn first hand but it could be that under FoW for the initial attack there were no known interceptors, but for the second attack an interceptor had been revealed and the full damage odds were then on display?

Granted that doesn't quite explain why the first attack stayed within the initial attack odds, but maybe you had an escort on the first attack and there were no escorts for the second attack?

Thanks Hubert,

Those are good points and I can't really say if I noticed whether they could have been at play or not.

I have seen this so many times that I'm sure I will see it again, so I will pay more attention to documenting exactly what all the parameters may or may not be.

Cheers,

It happened again but this time probably because of enemy fighter interceptors in range.

The initial odds with a Maritime bomber (supply 5 with readiness 42% and morale 45%) were 1:2 in which I was able to inflict 2 points of damage against a UK BB (supply 7), despite being intercepted by level 5 jets (damage was evaded twice).

When I checked the odds for a possible second attack, they were at 7:2, most likely because of the fighter interceptors.

So this indeed looks like it is WAD and as per Hubert's comments.
