I outgunned allied fighters about 14-3 yesterday and it was an 11-0 scoreline today (subject to FOW).
I still don't have many skilled fighter pilot reserves. For the IJA I might transfer out all trained pilots from one 3rd Air Div Sentai now in rear areas and replace them with rookies to train.
The IJN fighter pilot reserve pool will get a lot of pilots in a few weeks when about 4 IJN fighter groups withdraw, so they are in decent shape. I have about 10-12 more 80+ fighter pilots thanks to the battles over PNG so they will "graduate" to KB units and be replaced by 70+ pilots that are currently afloat.

Zoomed in view of the Battle of Siangtan.

Siangtan should be captured in a few days if CS doesn't reinforce it. The defenders should withdraw to the NE.
3rd and 6th Divs will then move NE cross country which may prompt the Chinese evacuation of Changsha.
9th Div will hold at Siangtan and build forts.
10,19,20 Divs will move west to join the advance from Shaoyang to Chihkiang.

The various Regts at Shaoyang are two each from 30th and 31st Divs plus 90th IR. They will become garrison troops in this area once the front line moves NW.

23rd Army will take Kweilin and Liuchow, then move north along the slow Kweilin-Chihkiang road to threaten Chihkiang from being flanked.

13th Army with 15th and 17th Divs is not far away from joining in.

8th Armoured Car Coy is moving NW to switch the NE Changsha hexside. 9th ACC is "defending" to show a presence in the clear hex SW of Changsha as other units march through it.

I need lots of tank units to arrive before I try an assault river crossing against Chihkiang. That is at least a few weeks away, but they are moving fairly quickly from the recent battles around Sian.

8th and 9th Air Regiments (JAAF Base Forces) will setup at Hengyang which is already a size 3 airfield. I will buy out a few Sally bomber units from Manchukuo to operate from here before saving PP again to buy out the 52nd Division for Burma.
HQ 4th Air Div is currently just to the east at Wuchang. It will move to Hengyang shortly too.

I just expanded the Nick-A "research" factory to 60. The factory is fully repaired at 30 but as the Nick-A will start production on 1 May 42 anyway there is no time for it to advance the production date. I want to build 60 Nicks / month asap so by expanding the factory now it will be fully repaired by 1 May and start building 2 planes/day from day 1.

Buna is occupied by the Japanese – the allies have a small unit at Kokoda (the jungle rough hex halfway to Port Moresby). I’m assuming it is a New Guinea Rifles Bn. 85th JAAF AF Bn arrives at Tokyo – will form part of the 1st Hikodan (Air Regiment / JAAF Base Force) as part of 3rd Air Division. 1st Hikodan is responsible for the air defence of Thailand and Indochina. The plan was for the 85th AF Bn to support training groups at Phnom Penh. When it arrives the 82nd JAAF AF Bn that is currently at Phnom Penh will move to Bangkok. Reviewing the plan, Phnom Penh has a garrison requirement of only 10, currently met by the 82nd JAAF AF Bn (9AV) and the 4th JAAF AF Coy (6AV). That is a poor use of aviation support squads in 1942 but I have used all the obvious small infantry units to meet other garrison requirements. I have just spoken to the King of Thailand to ask if he can spare an infantry detachment to garrison Phnom Penh. The 6th and 7th Thai Divisions are currently split into RCTs and are providing garrison forces around Georgetown and Kuala Lumpur in Malaya. The plan was to replace them with the 79th and 80th IJA Garrison Bns in May. Now that my staff believe that the threat of allied counter-invasions of Malaya has passed, the King and I agreed to move the 6th Thai Div to garrison roles on the east coast of the Gulf of Siam. The 7th Thai Div will reorganise to garrison both Georgetown and KL until relieved in May. That will free up 56 x aviation support squads to move forward from Phnom Penh into Burma where they will be put to better use. 3rd Air Divs training air groups will concentrate at Saigon. Well, that’s probably more than has ever been written about COL Haruhito Kanin’s 85th JAAF AF Bn in an AAR!

Another good thing about PBEM, is that while waiting for the turn to come back you get some enforced planning time. Often playing vs the AI I would smash through multiple turns and not spend enough time planning.
I'm currently talking to the Southern Expeditionary Army HQ staff about options for future operations in India. The Int staff have identified a few interesting tidbits:
1. Chinese units currently at Kunming, some captured mail indicates that these units started the war in Kweilin and Luchow respectively. The deduction is that the Chinese 4th War Area has all moved into NE India or beyond along the jungle trails. Two new units have just been spotted east of Kunming trying to bypass to the north through the mountains. It will take them a while, but I don't think I can block them as they will just keep trying to march around through the mountains.
2. 23rd Indian Div currently at Cox's Bazaar started the war in Calcutta. This indicates a general forward deployment of the Indian Eastern Command. No Southern or Northern Command troops have been spotted yet.
3. The number of vehicles spotted at Chittagong suggests that the UK 7th Armoured Bde is there
4. The Aussie token on top of the Chittagong stack is likely to be the 2/3rd MG Bn, but the 6th and 7th Aussie Divs could be somewhere in India by now
5. UK 18th Div hasn't been spotted yet. I am hoping it was sent to Colombo, but it could be anywhere by now.

The 3 x IJ Divisions currently committed into central Burma should be plenty against the remaining allied Burma Corps units.
25th Army is moving north and while they are all preparing for Colombo to try and putoff allied SigInt, i will probably send them ashore at Cox's Bazaar with their initial target to capture Chittagong by marching overland. The 14th Tank Regt is the only armoured unit left with 25th Army as subunits of 1st and 2nd Tank Divs are on ships moving to China so that they can recombine in Jun 42.
I've asked the War Minister for more Tank Regts - the reply is that two more will arrive in Jul 42, one in Aug 42 then 3rd Tank Div will form in China in Dec 42. There won't be any after that until 1944.
After Chittagong is captured I will need lots of Oscars to protect it from bombing as it is clear terrain. I will then try to cutoff allied supply routes into and withdrawal routes out of Assam with 52nd/53rd/54th Divs.

Repairs completed on DD Fumizuki at Hakodate, ship returned to service – Mutsuki class 2/42 upgrades are now complete. As one of the older destroyers I use them as CL escorts. I am reorganising all CL task forces now that the DD Mutsukis have depth charges. All IJN CLs are old so I will generally use them as fast transport task forces or in support of other BB and CA task forces.
- Tenryu and Tatsuta are under conversion to CLAA before joining a CV task force
- SWAF: Kuma, Tama and Kiso now have 7 x DD Minekaze escorts
- SAF: Kitakami and Oi now have 6 x DD Minekaze escorts
- SEAF: Nagara, Isuzu and Yura now have 4 x DD Mutsuki escorts. If they can survive until 1/44 they will become CLAAs
- SEAF: Natori, Kinu and Abukuma are the same as the above Nagaras, 4 x DD Mutsuki escort and to CLAA in 1/44
- SEAF: Sendai, Jintsu and Naka now have 4 x DD Mutsuki escort. Once the Nagaras become CLAA they will get two more Mutsukis

I’m still not sure whether I risk allied subs and send her back to Kure or just let the Singapore repair crew fix her completely. I will decide in 8 days time.

Obi is occupied by the Japanese
SS I-168 detects possible enemy submarine at 177, 104 but is unable to close within attack range – just NW of Lihue in Hawaii
Search Ki-46-II Dinah destroyed by CAP at (56,104) – The Dutch shoot down the first Ki-46 of the war over Soerabaja… At first I thought that the allies must have accelerated Spitfire VIII research and teleported it to Soerabaja to achieve this! I fly Dinahs at 30k feet to try and keep them clear of trouble and figured they would be untouchable for a long time yet due to their top speed of 375mph. No hint as to who shot this Dinah down, but the last Dutch fighter encountered over Soerabaja was a single 75A-7 Hawk about a week ago. From the database, these Hawks have a max altitude of 32340 and cruise/max speeds of262/321mph. So if the Dinah-II was cruising along at its leisurely 249mph cruise speed and didn’t spot a Hawk flying high CAP then this result is entirely feasible. This Dinah was from the 76th IF Chutai flying from Makassar. Most pilots are >60 experience but there are a couple of ~50 experience recent graduates so it may have been one of the newbies shot down.

This is the current situation around Lanchow in North China.
I have just reorganised the air recon groups in China so should get more information on enemy troop numbers over the next few days. Four enemy units are spotted at Lanchow which could mean the Sining is lightly defended.
Mongol Garrison Army:
- 4th Cav Bde will move SW from Kiuchuan towards Sining to make contact with whatever is on that road.
- HQ MGA, 26 Div and 2nd IMB will conduct an assault river crossing against four units spotted one hex east of Lanchow
- 1st Cav Bde won't join in the river crossing as Cav units don't do well in assaults
- 4th Mongol Cav Div is on the distant left flank, split into RCTs in a screen to the east of Yenan.
20th Army (from Manchukuo, in grey)
- the provisional Tank Div is actually 4 x Tank Regts all from Manchukuo. They will spearhead an attack on four units spotted at Lanchow but only after I have more recon on their types and numbers and also only after HQ 20th Army and 1st Div arrive from the south. Lanchow is in Desert Rough terrain so won't be an easy battle. Once Lanchow is captured all IJA troops will likely combine to help capture Sining, which as a Mountain terrain hex also isn't easy to capture. Once Sining is captured, MGA will move north while 20th Army moves south.
- 11th Div will hold Tienshui area. The Chinese unit that has just marched back into the hex is likely a Corps that has taken heavy losses recently so I suspect it is on a suicide mission. 11th Div will conduct a limited advance in this area but will stop short of taking on the 14 Chinese units to the SE of it by itself.
- 12th Div will hold on the eastern side of the river as it wouldn't be a good idea to conduct an assault river crossing into Wooded Rough terrain on its own. If the 14 Chinese units across the river move west, it will cross the river and maintain contact.
12th Army
- 27th Div and 12th Tank Regt are recovering disablements at Sian
- 32nd Div is split into RCTs holding a hex each along the Nanyang-Sian road
- 15th Tank Regt is a small TOE with less tanks than other Regts, so I am using it in a recon role to keep watch across the river to the north. I am going to move it NE into the clear terrain to cut the road behind the Chinese forces in 1st Army's area.
1st Army
- remain on the defence around Tsiaotso just off the bottom edge of this image.
- 9th IMB will move west to maintain contact with the 24k troops that are withdrawing from the mountains.
- 14th Div/A will rail south to Changsha once the Chinese withdraw away from Taiyuan

This raw AV ratio means that I can afford to move 1 or 2 Infantry Divisions and supporting units out of Tsiaotso to help with the NCAA axis of advance. I will move 1 x Division out initially and send it forward to support 12th Army as it responsibility for a wide front.
Tsiaotso has 41 active Light Industry so is generating 41 x Supply per day for the allies, but I don’t think that is anywhere near enough to keep all Chinese forces near Tsiaotso in supply.

Another good thing about PBEM, is that while waiting for the turn to come back you get some enforced planning time. Often playing vs the AI I would smash through multiple turns and not spend enough time planning.

As we are both off work for a few weeks we are generally flipping two turns a day. The time zone difference really helps in that regard.
It’s now 23 Mar 42 and it’s about to get tactical in both the Bay of Bengal and the Coral Sea.
The game has moved too quickly to consult the Admirals on the IGHQ staff on the finer details, so the next few days will either work out or I will learn some lessons the hard way!.

This is the plan for the invasion of Port Moresby from 21 Mar that is now 2 days into being implemented.

HQ Southeast Area Fleet at Truk will command this operation – VADM Kusaka is currently in command of this theatre, but with an air skill of 72 he is more suited to command an Air Fleet. He will be replaced by a full ADM once I have enough spare PPs (maybe in 1943!).
8th Fleet (HQ won’t arrive until Jul 42) has the following assigned for this operation:
CV task force: 5CV, 2BB, 8DD – VADM Nagumo is in overall command of all air combat task forces
CVL task force: 3CVL, CS, 2BB, 6DD – the 2BB will detach and join the assault task force at sea near Milne Bay to provide gunfire support to the landing.
ASW task force: 3DMS – will multi-role as a MSW task force if Port Moresby has been mined.
SEAF Sub Division has about 12 subs allocated to it now with most ion patrol n the Coral and Solomon Seas or further south along the Australian east coast
HQ 11th Air Fleet at Truk – VADM Tsukahara in overall command of all land based air forces – the IJAAF does not yet have a presence in this theatre
HQ 23rd Air Flotilla at Lae with airgroups currently split between Lae and Rabaul

The big question for 23 Mar 42 is: Will the RN CA task force spotted here put in another bombardment on Akyab to try and close the airfield, or bombard the IJA force at Cox’s Bazaar?
The second question is, will the RN continue to advance despite being spotted? I think the answer to that is yes, just like they did on 7 Mar 42.

As I have two CA task forces available I will send one to cover both bases with reaction 6, with orders that whoever makes contact first does enough damage that my second CA task force can finish the job. The BB task force will follow up but may miss out on the action. I contemplated a flank speed run for the BBs but the fuel it would guzzle looks horrendous. Task Force 20 lays minefield at Cox's Bazar ( 54 , 43) and sets course for Victoria Point – mostly aimed at the allied subs there, but if the RN CAs do make it into the Cox’s Bazar hex this could surprise them.

AM phase: TF 132 sighted by Allied Patrol at 54,43 near Cox's Bazar – that’s my DMS task force on ASW patrol. I have just split it in half to have 2 x DMS patrolling each of Cox’s Bazaar and Akyab on low risk to try and interfere with whatever the RN plan is.
AM: E13A1 Jake sighting report: Allied SS at 54,43 near Cox's Bazar , Speed 16 , Moving Northeast – a risk to my CA task force, but it is spotted each day and I now have half the BB and CA floatplanes flying night search patrols.
AM: E13A1 Jake sighting report: 3 Allied ships at 49,40 near Cuttack , Speed 15 , Moving East – this looks like a separate ASW task force. If it is lower numbered it will soon be eating some 8” shells.
PM phase: E13A1 Jake sighting report: Allied BB at 49,40 near Cuttack , Speed 15 , Moving East – this could be the R class BBs but I think it is more likely the same CA/CL task force that bombarded Akyab a few weeks ago. That task force consisted of:
CA Cornwall
CA Exeter – sunk by IJN sub torpedoes. That leaves 1CA, 7CL plus I assume 2DD as escorts. HMS Cornwall and Glasgow are the biggest threat. If this is the same task force that is about half the RN cruiser strength. I assume the rest of the RN CA/CL/DDs are with the RN CVs and BBs, but I have lots of long range Mavis, Betty and Nell search out into the Bay of Bengal and haven’t spotted them yet. If my BB and CA task forces react too far west that could be bad news…

BB2 (Battle Sqn 2): 2BB, 5DD – VADM Kukita is in tactical command of all IJN forces in this area. I have high naval skill, but cautious VADMs as my BB task force commanders.
CA3: 4CA, 9DD – RADM Tanaka in command. I have high aggression RADMs as my CA task force commanders.
CA6: 4CA, 6DD – RADM Yamazaki in command. This task force was escorting troop convoys and about to redeploy to SEAF, but the appearance of the RN here will delay that move
CL2: 3CL, 7DD – RADM Kuwabara in command. This task force is loaded with supply in fast transport mode for a run to Akyab. It will complete that mission then join in the search for anything the RN has left afloat! I use high naval skill but cautious RADMs as my CL task force commanders.

The turn has just arrived back within a few hours, so I’ll find out now and report back asap!

23 March 42 initial report:
- plenty of action in the Coral Sea with the Port Moresby assault task force landing. Allied PT boats make a nuisance of themselves but no other naval contacts are spotted
- anti-climax in the Bay of Bengal as the RN task force moves only one hex, putting it 7 hexes from Akyab suggesting that is the target for tomorrow.

I may have got the turn back to CS in time for him to enter another round of orders his evening time, so i will try to quickly catchup on the main action.
Writing this AAR actually helps me check if I've missed something...

Aircraft A6M5 Zero advances R&D to 7/43 – the three extra size 30 research factories will be fully repaired in 3, 5 and 5 days to give me 7 total. Rufes will also start production with a fully repaired factory at 30/month from 1 April. The Ha-35 engine pool is currently has 289 and is only increasing slowly, so will be a while before I get any engine research bonus for the Zeros.
