Had to go back a ways to try and get a fix on the game date. That should be at the head of each combat (or series of combats from the same turn) reported.

It usually takes three penetrating hits to sink an I-boat. Two will sometimes do an R-boat.
With that damage the sub should be easier to detect and finish off if you have some ASW to follow it toward probable repair port.
