Friendly fire (probably has been asked before)

Post by btcubs »

I apologize if this has been gone over already, but I had a rather odd thing happen and was wondering if I am doing something wrong. Playing against the computer, as the Americans, I have taken Buka, and currently have a number of task forces unloading troops on Rabaul. I have a carrier task force at Buka, and another covering at Rabaul. 2 days in a row, my carriers at Buka, and land based bombers at Lunga, have attacked my TF's at Rabaul. It shows the number of planes attacking, followed by "50 Wildcats defending with CAP", and then I end up with 3 destroyers being sunk, and a couple of CVE's damaged.

I guess I could understand this happening once, attribute it to the Ark Royal/Sheffield type misunderstanding, but it has now happened 2 or 3 turns in a row. Any suggestions (or links if this has been gone over before). thanks.

Were your bombers set to Port Attack? The reason I ask is I had this happen when I invaded Villa. I had some B17s at Lugna hitting Villa's port and on the turn my ships started unloading they attacked my ships at Villa. I reset them to Ground Attack at it did not happen again. I was thinking maybe it was because I had the bombers set to attack the port and my ships were unloading? But if yours were set to something different that blows my theory.

Personally Id like to see the occasional "Friendly Fire" incident built into the game, there were many such incidents. But I agree that the same thing keep repeating 2-3 turns is a bit excessive.
There is only one tactical principle which is not subject to change. It is to use the means at hand to inflict the maximum amount of wound, death, and destruction on the enemy in the minimum amount of time.

Bug

Post by mogami »

Hi, The US 9th Tactical Airforce was known as the American Luftwaffe because it bombed American troops on more then one occasion. The highest ranking American killed in WW2 was killed by American bombers.
However in UV I think this is a bug (I'm sure it is) Post it up in the bug forum and send a save to U2 (he has a thread up there with address)
When the UV patch begins works this will be addressed.
They will need a save that reproduces the bug on their machine. (The game file from the turn before the friendly fire)

I'm not retreating, I'm attacking in a different direction!

My favorite "Friendly Fire" incident of WW2 (because no one was hurt which allows for humor over the incident) was the bombing of the USS Grayling durring the battle of Midway. The Greyling of course was a Submarine. It was cruising along on the suface when it was attacked by US B17s. It had to dive to escape, no damage. The bomber crews returned to base and claimed a Japenese Cruiser had been sunk :D.

Having the possibility of "Friendly Fire" would sure add an interesting dimension to the game. I know it was just a bug, but when it happened I just started laughing and thought "Now theres some realism"

Thanks for the replies guys. I think I had the bombers set to ground attack, but that brings up another question I have. If I set them to ground attack, but when I choose the destination I click on the anchor at the opposing base, will that change their mission to port attack? Because that is a possibility. I was trying to just click on Rabaul, but I could have clicked on the port by accident.

I will try to get a save and post it. Thanks again.
