Interesting, but...

World in Flames is the computer version of Australian Design Group classic board game. World In Flames is a highly detailed game covering the both Europe and Pacific Theaters of Operations during World War II. If you want grand strategy this game is for you.

Interesting, but...

Post by Rising-Sun »

Not sure if I will get the infos in time before the sale ends. What I like to know that the store page didn't mention about there is no AI, and curious did they add that yet?

If there is no AI, dunno how things will goes between two players or more and there no telling if that will work out or not. Some like hotseat over netplay and been hearing a lot of bugs or uncomfortable results or comments time to time.

What are those length of those grand campaign? The one Germany attack Poland til the end of war and Waking the Gaint, when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. Noticed the video trailer, the person said the Japanese invaded Pearl Harbor and that is incorrect, it was attacked instead.

So if there is no AI, have any ideas when that will be added to the game in the future???

There is no AI and, anyone that buys this game should imo do so on the worst case scenario that there won't ever be one and make their decision on that.

I've never tried netplay and have no real interest in doing so. If that is also important to you then hopefully someone using that system will be able to tell you more. Personally, so long as I can play hotseat, solo or - most importantly, PBEM - then I'm comfortable with that.

The game still has bugs that are being worked through, but as you will see from the large number of AAR, the game is playable and, for as long as Steve has the inclination to do so, the bugs continue to be worked on.

So it depends how important the AI is to you. If that is your preferred method of play then you may want to stear clear, just in case its never done.

But I think there are two things to bear in mind that make the decision, in my view, a no-brainer a) the game happens to be the greatest war game ever and b) its £16. I mean £16 - seriously? THAT is ridiculous.

The best game ever, even with a few issues (that are being worked on), for £16? Nuts. Even based on full price my £ per hour of play is something so low its not probably calculable - but £16? There is not even a debate to be had. Bite Matrix arm off while you still can.

+1

And Netplay is the way to play this game. With enough gamesaves made, it's quite stable. There are still bugs around, but like mr. Warspite said: it's so good...

Hi Rising Sun,
I waited for at least six months before getting a new game and decided on MWIF. I was determined to wait it out and got rewarded with a great deal! What I wasn't counting on nor expecting was a $20 download. $100 was the number I knew I had to think about if I was going to ever play this game. Thanks Matrix! [:)]

Not having an AI is OK with me since I've played a lot of board games. As I am now in learning mode, I found the section about 'invading Hawaii' and not just the airstrike. I smiled to myself when I read your comment about the video trailer since I had the exact same thought.

Agree with these gentlemen.

I enjoy playing with other players, asking opponent reactions using WhatApp or AAR and sending file only between impulses.

This game was published six years ago, and recently entered early beta. I couldn't, in all fairness, suggest MWIF six years ago, when they asked $150 for it in a pre-alpha status (*)

$20 for the game in its current, improved, situation is, IMHO, a fair price - as long as you can accept the "Matrix Workaround in Flames" situation we are in (**). Just have a bit of human compassion for us early adopters.

(*) You can find here on the forum Erik Rutins' post "State of the Game and Future Plans, as of November 2017" - https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=4388273 - This post contains one of the most stunning money quote I ever seen:

The State of the Game

Thousands of issues have been resolved over the past few years, but despite that, much more work remains to be done.

I.e. Matrix admits openly that they released a game not only unfinished (with "thousand of issues"), but also years away from being finished. For $150. And, no, no offer of refund. Ever. Not even a coupon.

(**) The party line by the players since MWIF was released - and something dire happens - is "But there are... WORKAROUNDS!" Strange. I do own a restaurant, and if someone wants a pasta (or a pizza) I do not serve a dish of cold spaghetti - because the excuse "But there are... WORKAROUNDS! Here is my hair drier!" somehow doesn't work. I spend sleepless nights wondering why.

Ah, well... we just got the first of the missing optional rules finally implemented ("Kamikazes"). It took six years. With this pacing we will have the rest of them finished by 2075. I wonder how the World will be by that date... what you will see looking out of the window, I mean.
"Yes darling, I served in the Navy for eight years. I was a cook..."

I purchased MWiF on 16 Feb 2014 and pretty much have been playing it non-stop since then. MWiF is based on WiF version 7 rules with some deviations from the boardgame, most notably European hex scale is also used for the Asian, Pacific and US maps.

I'm also the proud owner of WiF CE. Initially, I only bought the vassal version but not soon after went all in purchasing the Deluxe version and electronic companion. Of course, WiF CE is based on version 8 rules. I've played some solo using vassal.

From the point of view of both an analyst/programmer with 40-years experience, I marvel at the skill required to produce the MWiF computer game and the WiF vassal module; but more significantly at the quality and performance of both; especially given the relatively merger resources devoted to their development and maintenance.

As I mentioned I've played WiF vassal a bit solo, but I'm always drawn back to MWiF, even though it's version 7 vs 8. Rules enforcement is a big reason for this. And, while I do admire and think that the WiF vassal module is very good, the feel and functionality of the MWiF computer game is OUTSTANDING!

With respect to an AI, I don't see how one can be developed that would even remotely be challenging without an excessive amount of cheating. I just don't see one happening, and honestly, if one did I'm not sure I'd even be interested in playing against it.

I remember reading somewhere, and it may be in this thread, that Netplay was the way to play this game. I would rather say that Netplay is one of three effective ways, in my opinion, of playing this game. The other two are solo and PBEM.

Netplay is limited to two players and requires both to be on and connected to the game at the same time. For me, this seems like the non-phasing player would be sitting and wasting a lot of time while the phasing player works through their impulse.

PBEM play on the other hand, using either Solo or Hotseat mode with a messaging service such as WhatsApp, can involved as many players as you wish and allows players to play through their impulse, or part of their impulse, without requiring other players to be hooked up to the game. Non-phasing, or even allied phasing, reactions can be handled through the messaging service. For example, in my current PBEM game with Composer99, I provided non-phasing reactions away from my computer while watching several New Year Day football bowl games. He was able to proceed smoothly through his phase without me having to be tied down to my computer and hooked up via Netplay.

In conclusion, I'd say if you enjoy WiF then MWiF especially at the offered priced is a non-brainer. For me, it was a non-brainer at its original price back in November 2014 when I made my purchase.

+1 I just don't understand what's to debate at £16 - I still can't believe its on sale at £16. I mean that's a few pints on one night out..... Staggering.

What concern to me that if I wanna play Japan and stick with it, that will need more players to deal with. Of course one of them might simply drop out and the whole game can be lost. Not sure if this can be done, having a player for each major power, can that be done???

How long these grand campaign usually last?

Mate it's 16 quid - just buy the game already!!!! [;)]

You can play Japan alone. Yes, if you do - and until the Pacific map only games are coded - you will need at least two other players (a Euro Axis and an Allied player). In a PBEM you can have one player for each major power but France and the US is normally one player for obvious reasons. Netplay I think is 2-player only.

Sure a player may drop out, but you have that problem with any game - even if playing with 2 players. But another player can simply pick up the departing players role in a PBEM. What happens in a netplay game when your opponent drops out I don't know - i.e. I don't know if someone can take over.

In my current game with 4 players

https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=4615461

We started last April and we are now at summer 1941. So in 9 months we have played 10 turns. We don’t every day, so game will last quite some time.

I’m playing Allies, we plan impulse usually one or two days (both tell what they plan to do etc) then I play our impulse. But I can’t play every night so our impulse takes 2-4 days. Travelling disturbs playing. I should stop travelling. And working.

At the end of turn everyone tells what they do and I run turn end.

That is very interesting, alright when I get a chance I see if I can find a way to purchase it. Unfort they never got back to me with the check out issues earlier. Going to try something different, if they doesn't work, probably will have to use the paypal.
