Current situation in Burma and Arakan, prompting some plans for future operations.

15th and 25th Armies are a bit mixed up on the Arakan coast at the moment.
HQ Southern Army is at Rangoon, drawing supply to it and allowing troop and airgroup upgrades.
53rd Div also just arrived at Rangoon while 5th Div/A and /C are moving to Burma from Sumatra.

The threat to Chittagong seems to have drawn deployment of every allied armoured vehicle and/or truck in India to the hex. As it is open country I am reluctant to advance into the open before arrival of the 4x AT Regts. 25th Army will advance to attack 23rd Indian Div again but will then likely hold in the Jungle.

HQ 15th Army will redeploy into central Burma to lead the Divs there. 33rd, 55th and 56th Divs will advance to the Burma-India border while 25th Army holds the front SE of Chittagong.

3rd Air Division will continue to sweep for allied fighters as I want to try and bomb Chittagong from the air. I figure it will be better to try and destroy those allied vehicles with Sallys than throwing infantry Divs at them.

I also have 1xBB and 3xCA task forces available in SWAF, but the risk of using them is that the RN may bring their CVs and BBs to counter. The recent bloody nose that the RN received may have reduced that threat though.

I have also been thinking about a deep airborne operation to try and cut allied supply lines to forward allied army positions but also to allied air bases. Dacca is currently size 4(6) and Ledo is size 6(6) already which suggests it is being built up and used for China resupply operations over The Hump.

Capturing Tezpur/Rangpur/Drajeeling would do it, although of those hexes only Darjeeling allows air-landing operations and the Clear terrain is probably not able to be defended against allied tanks and bombers. Looking at this image, capturing Dimapur and Silchar would have the same effect, with benefits that they are closer to friendly forces, they are both size 2 airfields so allow reinforcements to be flown in, and the Jungle terrain will help protect them from allied counter attacks (both air and land). I won't recon any of these potential targets until 15th Army has made contact with allied forces along the Burma-India border in case it gives the game away. My recon missions over Diamond Harbour and Calcutta seem to have prompted rail move of an Australian unit to help defend Diamond Harbour, so it looks like CS is paying close attention to where the Dinahs are flying.

If I had KB here I could BB the snot out of Chittagong and send the Army into the ruins, but KB's priority operation list is currently:
1. SEAF to cover SNLF advance into the Solomons and establishment of forward IJNAF bases to get eyes on Noumea
2. SAF to cover the invasion of Darwin and NW Aust raids
3. SWAF to cover BB operations against Chittagong and Indian Ocean raids to hunt the rest of the RN
4. NEAF to cover operations in the Aleutians - the ideal would be if USN CVs take losses during the time KB spends in SEAF and SAF, but the USN may keep itself out of KB contact until 1943.

Future ops planning in Southern Area Fleet.

The intent of this operation is to make it harder for the allies to operate from Darwin into the DEI, or at least to delay those future operations. SNLF units will raid to capture bases then move back to Koepang, leaving occupation and garrison duties to the IJA 14th Army. If the allies don't react I will hold the ground, but if they do try to counter attack I will delay as long as possible. An allied counter attack into NW Australia will mean they aren't able to use those forces elsewhere (like preparing to retake PNG). The Clear terrain hexes of the NT would let me bomb approaching forces, but I will only be able to hold Darwin for as long as I can hold air superiority (quality and quantity).

16th Army is at Soerabaja preparing for this operation while the IJN are organising the amphibious task forces. This operation won't launch until the CVs move back from SEAF.
SNLF units still need to clear Ambon before preparing for their raid locations.
Recon last turn showed that the allied NT ground force is split between Darwin and Katherine.
Allied air strength at Darwin is 24 fighters, 17 bombers.
Darwin is showing 13 ships in port, 2xDDs the largest and 1xAS which would be good to sink.

5th Air Div is based at Dili and Lautem. 78 Oscars in two group are ordered to conduct the first sweep of Australian airspace tomorrow.
The IJAAF 11th Hikodan (JAAF Base Force) with attach JAAF AF Bns will move forward from once Darwin is captured.

22nd Air Flotilla will leave some long range patrols flying into the Indian Ocean from Java, but will move the HQ and transport groups to Koepang to support SNLF operations. Apart from the fighting forces, naval construction Bns and small aviation base forces are moving to Timor.

The staff are falling behind with the daily sitreps...
I can’t remember much exciting happening on the 2nd but will post the report here later.
I had spotted 2x allied DDs in a small task force at Horn Island so sent the KB to just within strike range to investigate.

One other thing from yesterday is that 1x30 Rufe and 1x10 Mavis-L factories went into production.

Don't try to do daily unless you really want to, just do weekly or something and then daily during interesting events. It's what I do.

Port Moresby is captured ending the PNG campaign (the offensive version anyway).

2 x Dutch CLs bombard the SNLF on the beaches at Horn Island, wrecking their deliberate attack later in the day.
The KB spots the CLs withdrawing and another APD task force at Horn Is but fails to launch a strike... I blame the weather, but shuffle forces to setup a strike for tomorrow.

Concentrated Oscar sweeps score big wins over Diamond Harbour and Darwin. Combat reports say about 7-0 and 9-0 respectively, but the Intelligence screen scoreboard says even higher.

I asked the Navy Minister for more amphibious Transport air groups and parachute capable SNLFs as they would be very handy in the Pacific right now.
The request for more SNLF Paras was outright denied and Mavis-L production is capped at 10/month due to engine allocations.
Once the NW Australia raids are done the SNLF paras and Mavis-L airgroup will move to SEAF. Most of the starting Tinas should be ops losses by then so it will be issues with shiny new Mavis-Ls and split into thirds for duty in either 4th Fleet or NEAF.

RE: 2 Apr 42 reports

Post by jdsrae »

ORIGINAL: Anachro

Don't try to do daily unless you really want to, just do weekly or something and then daily during interesting events. It's what I do.

Cheers, I'm finding that going through the reports each day helps me spot a few things that otherwise I would miss, so this AAR is helping me pay more attention to some things.
Priority for my time is always to run the turn and enter orders, but if I have the time to check the details every few days I will edit the in game reports and post them.
That may change later if the game turns get too far ahead of where the daily reports are.

Squads: 0 destroyed, 16 disabled
Assaulting units:
Torres Strait Battalion
38th Australian Battalion
Horn Isl Det.
Defending units:
Maizuru 1st SNLF – the defenders are in trouble here, with reinforcements in the form of 21st Div/C still three days away. I have ordered a few emergency measures including Lae based Zeros to fly strafing missions and KB to conduct ground bombing as a secondary mission in the hope of inflicting casualties and disruption on the Aussie Bns to reduce their raw AV. 2 x CA led fast transport task forces may also drop supply tomorrow and fire at the defenders, but the lack of raw AV is the issue. Fingers crossed the SNLF can hold on until 21st Div/C arrive.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at 87,41 (near Tsiaotso)
Allied Deliberate attack – this is something new, with a Chinese attack in the Wooded Rough hex one NW of Tsiaotso. The lone IJA Division does very well helped by 2 field forts. This attack was probably prompted by my movement of forces forward out of 1st Army area. With these results I am expecting CS to pick one of the following:
1. Leave all forces in place and go back on the defensive.
2. Order a concentration of remaining forces at Tsiaotso and defend just that hex.
3. Order a general withdrawal of all force near Tsiaotso towards Sian.
I can cover any of the above with the forces I have within a few hexes of Tsiaotso. If CS abandons Tsiaotso that is his last remaining supply production centre in this area so I don’t believe he can threaten any sort of advance if he gives it up. If all Chinese forces concentrate at Tsiaotso, CS could try to force an assault river crossing SW to Loyang and try to break out to the SW, so I might delay the move of 110th Div out of Loyang for a few days until I see what happens in response to this defeat.
Attacking force 40931 troops, 251 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1453
Defending force 12177 troops, 131 guns, 32 vehicles, Assault Value = 445
Allied adjusted assault: 208
Japanese adjusted defense: 760
Allied assault odds: 1 to 3
Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+), experience(-)
Attacker: supply(-) – good to see that supply is short up here.
Japanese ground losses:
331 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 27 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 11 disabled
Engineers: 1 destroyed, 5 disabled
Guns lost 12 (4 destroyed, 8 disabled)
Allied ground losses:
4585 casualties reported
Squads: 172 destroyed, 229 disabled – that should leave about 1000 raw AV so if CS tries this again it will be even worse.
Non Combat: 1 destroyed, 45 disabled
Engineers: 2 destroyed, 28 disabled
Assaulting units:
38th Chinese Corps
1st Chinese Corps
16th Chinese Corps
47th Chinese Corps
43rd Chinese Corps
36th Chinese Corps
61st Chinese Corps
4th Group Army
8th Group Army
Defending units:
41st Division – disruption is 0, fatigue is 5 so they could hold this hex forever.
6th Medium Field Artillery Regiment
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Tsiaotso (88,42)
Allied Deliberate attack – another big attack and major defeat for the Chinese.
Attacking force 43953 troops, 242 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1513
Defending force 29085 troops, 228 guns, 198 vehicles, Assault Value = 1017
Allied adjusted assault: 220
Japanese adjusted defense: 3475 – 100% preparation for the infantry and 81% for HQ 1st Army results in more than triple the raw AV.
Allied assault odds: 1 to 15
Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+), leaders(+), fatigue(-)
Attacker:
Japanese ground losses:
562 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 63 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 24 disabled
Engineers: 1 destroyed, 3 disabled
Allied ground losses:
3499 casualties reported
Squads: 17 destroyed, 466 disabled – major disablements but not many destroyed, should leave about 1000 raw AV on each side.
Non Combat: 1 destroyed, 35 disabled
Engineers: 1 destroyed, 11 disabled
Assaulting units:
27th Chinese Corps
80th Chinese Corps
2nd Chinese Cavalry Corps
34th Chinese Corps
9th Chinese Corps
33rd Chinese Corps
93rd Chinese Corps
98th Chinese Corps
5th New Chinese Corps
14th Group Army
7th Group Army
15th Group Army
39th Group Army
4th Chinese Base Force
Defending units:
37th Division
36th Division
5th NCPC Infantry Brigade – this NCPC Bde is prepared as the garrison force and really shouldn’t be getting involved in combat, although their experience is up to 49 now.
1st Army

OPERATIONAL REPORT FOR Apr 05, 42
Rennell Island is occupied by the Japanese
ASW Combat TF 188 terminates patrol and enters Soerabaja for repairs
AGP Columbia Maru sinks in port – my attempt to save this AGP at Groot Natoena by flying in some HQ 2nd Fleet naval squads failed, the size 0 port wouldn’t have helped.
Repairs completed on CA Nachi at Singapore, ship returned to service
Repairs completed on DD Isonami at Singapore, ship returned to service
Repairs completed on DD Arashi at Singapore, ship returned to service
Repairs completed on DD Shirayuki at Singapore, ship returned to service
Allied Heavy Bomber sighted over Ndeni – not surprising to see 4E bombers on search missions, highly likely based at Noumea.
CL Abukuma sinks at sea
5 x Ki-56 Thalia transporting 2nd Fleet to Groot Natoena – they will now be flown back to Singapore.
8 x MC-21 Sally transporting 4th JAAF AF Coy to Cox's Bazar
6 x MC-21 Sally transporting 55th Const Co to Cox's Bazar
4 x H6K2-L Mavis transporting 23rd Air Flotilla from Milne Bay, back to Lae

5 x Ki-57-I Topsy transporting supplies to Yokosuka 4th
5 x Ki-57-I Topsy transporting supplies to Yokosuka 4th
Repairs completed on SS I-172 at Singapore, ship returned to service – ordered to patrol the Ceylon south coast
Japanese (Thai) forces CAPTURE Lashio !!!
Marcus Island expands fortifications to size 2
Adak Island expands airfield to size 2 – I have 3 x subs around Adak Island to try and intercept further troop or supply convoys, but nothing much else to counter the allied build up in NEAF.
Miri expands port to size 3 – maxed out port, oil fields are repairing as I am keeping the supply >10k, so I will also increase the forts.
Dili expands fortifications to size 2
Low garrison leads to damage and 1 VP loss from partisan attack at Mandalay (59, 46)! I only have a garrison of 13/20 here with the 55th Cav Regt in hex recovering from the last battle. I will move an IJAAF Bn here with 9 AV to get this garrison over 20 but need to find a small garrison unit to leave here permanently. I just checked the reinforcement queue and the INA Regts don’t arrive until Jul 43, so will probably use the Thai Cav DIv until then.
Loss of xAK Tamashima Maru on Apr 05, 1942 is admitted
Loss of PB Taikei Maru on Jan 19, 1942 is admitted
CL Emerald is reported to have been sunk near Diamond Harbour on Mar 25, 1942
Currently playing my first PBEM, no house rules Scenario 1 as IJ.

This airgroup will take rookies and train them up for a few months. It starts as part of 22 Air Flotilla but the other Kanoya airgroups are split between 21 and 22 Air Flots. I will use all Kanoya airgroups as part of 21 Air Flot (in SWAF) and will pay the PP to transfer them when I have run out of more important things to spend them on. This group will stay at Bangkok to train until it is certified for front line service, somewhere between Sabang and Chittagong.

Nauru Island expands airfield to size 1 – I’m not wasting fuel to bring the resources back from Nauru,

A lot of players say this, but that's 2000 resources/day, 2400 if you add the other base out that way. Now I'm not saying get all of it, but you may want to ship some back to a 'hub' like Truk. From there it could wind its way back to the HI. After all lots of stuff should pass through Truk, especially coming out of the HI.

That is a lot of resources going to waste. Your forward supply convoys in the area can go there and to Ocean, pick up supplies, then unload them at Truk. Then the larger ships can bring them to the Home Islands. It will cost little fuel and someone actually did run short of resources in one game that I can recall.

Basically, this is my calc on the situation.

If I get Magic Highway going, then I want the resources from Nauru.

If I don't get the Magic Highway going, then the resources aren't likely needed. There are nearer places with more (India).

I have very few merchants going out to the Gilberts, and the ones that do go there are of the small low VP varieties.
There are so many more resources in the Philippines and DEI that do have large merchants going past them that I just don’t believe the Nauru and Ocean Islands resources are needed anyway.

This is an update of my resource convoy planning to show my working.

If you are counting on Magic Highway … it is pretty late already. You should have resources/oil flowing from Saigon/Hanoi to Fusan by now IF the Magic Highway is going to work. If you don't have it by now, likely you will never get it … once the resource flow AI gets a pattern set, it is very difficult to teach it another. Particularly one that is not "optimal" by its logic, and the Magic highway is far from optimal.

It took me almost a year of sand boxing to work out how to get it to work (and in the process really understand how resources flow in the game). There are a hundred little things that you need to do, and hundreds more that you absolutely have to avoid. They all make perfect sense once you think through how the movement in the game works, which not coincidentally, is a close parallel on how goods flow IRL.

It still seems to be 50:50 whether subs get a chance to fire torpedoes so these are still very dangerous waters for both sides to be operating in.

I'm not counting on the magic highway, but something might still move that way.
I'm planning on moving stuff the old fashioned way via the green and yellow routes.

That is a lot of resources going to waste. Your forward supply convoys in the area can go there and to Ocean, pick up supplies, then unload them at Truk. Then the larger ships can bring them to the Home Islands. It will cost little fuel and someone actually did run short of resources in one game that I can recall.

Hey Joe
I crunched some numbers about a year ago to see what it would take to get all of these Resources home.
In summary, it would need something like:
- 9 task forces with a total of:
- 37+ xAK Tohos - Nauru can dock a maximum of 3xToho with a couple of small escorts, and the load rate means those 3xTohos will take 2 days to load. So while loading 10575 of Resources, the base produces another 4000 in the same time! 6 x clones of this task force are needed to setup an export rate that moves more out of Nauru than is produced each day, factoring in all of days to load, days to move, days to unload, and days to move back. Too many of these task forces and they bump into each other with bottlenecks at either port. Even with 6 of this task forces running fulltime, it would take nearly a year to clear the stockpile which is about 200k Resources.
- 18 xPB Tosus - this could drop to 9 to give each taskforce a single escort, but I don't have many spare Tosus as they are being used to escort other convoys in the DEI
- about 700-800 fuel/day would be needed to keep all of these ships moving.

The size 2 ports mean that small ships and task forces are needed so that they can dock and load.
Then the time they take to move the 25 hexes back to Truk at a leisurely 10 knots, means that the Nauru stockpile grows almost as quickly as it can be extracted.

Looking at this again now, Truk would probably need another task force (+8xToho +2xTosu) as the 1600 days it would take to clear the stockpile with only 2x task forces means that the enemy will interfere with this operation well before it is all moved. That would add another 230ish fuel/day to the venture, or more than 1000/day total. Assuming these convoy routes stay open for 1942 and maybe half of 1943, that would be more than 500k fuel spent keeping Tohos or similar hauling Resources over long distances.

To clear Ocean Island of Resources would be easier, but even that would need a dedicated convoy and about 6 months. Cost would be about 75 fuel/day to collect 10575/16 = 660 Resources per day

At a cost of so much shipping (some needed elsewhere), 800+ fuel/day to get 2400 resources/day, it's just too expensive for me.
Plus the risk of all those Victory Points (ships) dangling out on the edge of the empire prone to aggressive USN DD raiders, I just don't think the Nauru/Ocean Island Resources are worth the effort to collect.

Details in the image below to show my working. I haven't had anyone check any of these calcs so it may contain some errors.
The distance from Nauru-Truk-Nauru should probably be more like 50 hexes rather than 55, but I added a fudge factor of about 10% to all of these calcs due to many of the other convoy routes having to go around islands in the DEI.

If you start when you first capture it, it does not build up too high. If ships from the Southern Solomons are included in removing some resources it is easier. If you go after the Line Islands and into the Southern Pacific, use those empty ships on their return, including any empty transports.

You don't have to grab it all but every little bit helps - especially if Hokkaido is lost. You don't have to be docked to load the resources either although it will load slower. Just rotate the ships that are docked. Usually the Japanese have excess cargo ships in the beginning, so you might as well load them. Why have empty cargo ships sail from Truk back to Japan?

Not likely. Once Singapore starts acting as a sink, it is almost (I add this only because in a Gary game anything is possible, but the odds here are incredibly low) impossible to change it.

Magic highway plan has to start on 7Dec41 and you have to work it until you have the Singers to EndPoint (Fusan/Shanghai) flowing.
