How I lost my job with the Royal Navy: Bubiyan

Post by Eboreg »

This scenario is a nice little one about just how vulnerable missile boats are to air cover. You start off as a Royal Navy Task Force escorting a US Battleship to perform operations in the Persian Gulf during Desert Storm. The fact that the Iraqi Navy was set as a Neutral party was rather annoying but my orders were not to fire until fired upon. I started by setting up an AWACS orbit as well as an airborne jammer to keep an eye on any shipping in the area while turning off my own Task Force's radars so as not to give my position away. Sadly, the AWACS couldn't identify any of the shipping in the area but luckily, I did have a few recon planes to help out on that front. I decided to goad the Iraqi Navy into firing on one of my aircraft so that I could return fire with extreme prejudice but no matter how low I was while buzzing and Iraqi missile boat, it just wouldn't open fire.

I eventually just said, "F*** it, we're at war with Iraq, let's act like it," and launched a salvo of Sea Skuas at it from 3 Lynx helicopters sinking it instantly but not before it sent all of its anti-shipping missiles into my murderball of an air defense. I then proceeded to pick off the rest of the Iraqi Navy with a combination of Sea Skuas, Harpoons, and low-level bombing runs. During the process, an Iranian ship fired at one of my Sea Skuas and ate four Harpoons from the Missouri Task Force for its trouble.

After most of the Iraqi Navy was sent to the bottom of the Persian Gulf, I decided to reconnoiter the Iraqi coast for SSM batteries and while I found them, most of my bombers were still being re-armed after their attacks on the Iraqi Navy so I was really only able to take out one battery. One of my ships did get damaged from a Patrol Craft that managed to sneak up really close but it was only component damage, the structural integrity of the ship was not compromised at all.

While moving closer to my station, the Iranians decided to open fire whereupon I retaliated with Sea Skuas to take out their heavier vessels and gunfire to take out their Boghammers. All in all, a fairly simple, easy scenario if you grossly violate the ROE.
