Purchase from Steam or Matrix direct?

Post by zzzuke »

All things being equal, is it more beneficial for developers if I purchase directly from Matrix site?

Will probable purchase some DLC's and would prefer more of the proceeds be directed to the developers. Is there any issue purchasing from Matrix now that I already have a Steam version. Am I obligated to continually purchasing through this route?

Thanks,

Mike

Whichever you like. You can buy from Matrix, and register the key on Steam if you like, or just buy on Steam. If you already have CMANO, don't uninstall it.

As for which route makes Warfaresims more money, I don't know.

Buy on Matrix have both, but on Steam only get Steam. Two for the price of one on matrix you decide.

Don't know about developers but from my personal standpoint, I like buying from Matrix, because then you can download and try the interim fixes that come up just as soon as they make them, rather than wait for the issued installer update. Just my own preference.

IIRC, you can apply interim fixes to Steam version too.

Yes. I do it all the time. Nothing to it. Just a different directory.

Here's the plus I like with Steam: if I install a beta update, and don't like it, I can tell Steam to put it back to 'current' w/o me having to reinstall.

IMO, it's purely your preference.

I like buying from the developers assuming you also get a Steam key. That way the developers (hopefully) get more $$$ in their pocket and I can still add the game to Steam and take advantage of those conveniences if I like, or just install stand-alone.

Just a note, you can also install on Steam, and as long as your Steam client has been connected recently, and you have it connected to download updates, you can set Steam offline to run the game as much as you like.

My son uses the Steam account playing HoI4 and EU4 with his friends a lot on his computer, while I run CMO with Steam offline, no issues.

Of course, if you don't like Steam, that's your choice as well.

I do prefer Matrix mind however I do like the return policy for Steam of which Matrix does not seem able to match.

Matrix version is stable more than steam version.

I have both version of CMO/CMANO/Tacview.

Non-steam version are better to avoid some bugs.

But Mateix(Slitherine) gives steam key. I recommend you to purchase CMO or Matrix games here.

I understand they should be identical.

They are identical on files & code, but the Steam client really likes to shove its rusty hooks inside the running program as far as they'll go (you're welcome for the mental image), which can cause anything from slowdowns to nuclear meltdowns (we are far from alone in this, BTW). And we cannot prevent this in-code, it has to be stopped by the player. This is why we always say "turn off Steam overlays and disable DirectWrite on the Steam client".

Ah!

In which case, could there be a way to run Steam-installed CMO without the running the Steam client?

Many of use like using Steam for the convenience of updates. However, I'm also aware there are quite a few DRM-free games on Steam that could be run without the client (e.g. via shortcut), while still benefitting from client updates from time to time.

While CMO is not DRM-free, could something similar be done for those of us with a Matrix serial?

i.e. an alternative game executable that will run without the client (using the Matrix serial instead), but will be updated by Steam whenever we choose to run the client. Just an idea...
