Modding Weapons...

Post by CaesarAug »

First of all, I'm having a GREAT TIME modding Distant Worlds Universe... It is a captivating game!

I notice that the game engine handles ship weapons—with their corresponding icons—in different ways.
Beam weapons seem like the typical turbolaser beams in the Star Wars universe, i.e., they shoot like "torpedo beams" as it were.

Beam weapons classified as Phasers, however, look like the typical phaser beams in the Star Trek universe, i.e., they
shoot like one continuous beam from the firing ship to its target.

So one simple modification is to alter the Superlaser Death Star weapon from WeaponSuperBeam (59)
to WeaponSuperPhaser (65). This gets a more Star Wars-like, continuous Death Star Superlaser blast! Works great!

Ok, so having watched Rogue One again, I was wondering how to get a comparable "one reactor" Superlaser blast
for planet bombardment, not planet destruction. You know, what Director Krennic was ordered to do...

Seemingly, beam and phaser weapons cannot bombard planets, despite being given a bombardment rating... or can they?

So I'm experimenting with adding "another" weapon, in game terms (though it's still the "Superlaser" that's doing the bombardment).
By classifying it as WeaponBombard (49), sure enough, I get a bombardment weapon... but the icon is treated not like one continuous phaser blast,
but rather like a "torpedo beam".

Yet... to my surprise, when this "other" weapon is classified as WeaponSuperPhaser (65), just like the normal Superlaser it's supposed to simulate,
I get a bombardment rating! And it strikes the planet with that glorious, continuous phaser-like Superlaser blast! But only occasionally does it actually
damage the planet. It takes many such Bombardment missions to cause planet damage. Yet if it's classified as WeaponBombard (49), then it causes
planet damage with each strike.

Why is that, I wonder? I hope I've made sense... Any ideas for making a WeaponSuperPhaser-classified "Superlaser" be more accurate when bombarding planets?
