With PDU on, its worth it IF you have the economy sized to take advantage of it.

Big IF...
I have a plan for the aircraft and engine factories to support production of more FBs, but if you mean something else then I will find out what I've missed in a few years time!
The meaning is the obvious one, but that doesn't make it easy. You're using PP's to switch to an air frame. To get benefit from that PP expenditure, you have to use them. FB's are used 2 ways:
1. Through '42 as behind front lines CAP against 4E over priority targets.
2. As strafers/low NavBomb against light ships.

Using them means they consume supply. In CAP role, not too bad. In the strafing role, they can chew through a fair amount pretty quick. Then there is also the supply to expand the factories and place the aircraft into the groups. This is what I am talking about in terms of economy size.

It is one thing to talk about building 10,000 aircraft, and then quite another to have the supply to support 1,000,000 missions (~100 days for 10,000 aircraft). This is the part that frequently gets overlooked by the IJ player until too late. You need to size your supply stock to meet your anticipated airforce mission requirements. Bombers can blow through a phenomenal amount of supply in a short time.

This is one reason for my focus on RnD for fighters … it is an aircraft the IJ can afford to fly. By '45, unless I have greatly expanded my economic base (India or OZ), I just won't have the supply/economy to match the allied mission count. Planes are not the metric to plan for, missions are.

I agree. I think that fighters are the most cost effective aircraft for the Japanese, points wise anyway. Think of the KB with supersized fighter groups only to shred the DS attack, especially if you can do something to break the DS up so there is less coordination. I am thinking if a few small SCTFs can cause some CVTFs to break away and/or night torpedo/bomb attacks being successful.
Seek peace but keep your gun handy.

I agree Pax, the supply dilemma is a constant constraint.
I did do some supply use planning about a year ago that included estimates based on airgroups training and flying CAP, but I assumed that bombing missions would not be regular.
I will need to remember that and ration the bombing sorties after the initial territorial expansion is done.
The main reason I want Nicks is to have something to counter allied bombers through 1942, so they will mainly be used in the CAP role.
I will also train the pilots for low naval attacks so they can perform those missions when the time comes.

5 x enemy units spotted in hex but no extra intel on who they are.
1 x AP spotted in port but it wasn’t hit.
This test mission was a success in that I now know I can bombard Diamond Harbour without the fortress guns hitting back, even though they had a go. I might send some BBs next. Bombardments of Diamond Harbour might prompt the allies to withdraw some forces from Arakan or Assam regions to bolster the ground defence here, or it might not.
With so much allied strength in NE India, I need to work up some ideas to outflank. I won’t have any spare Divisions until China is conquered and they march overland to replace 15th and/or 25th Armies on the Burma-India border. I’ll need to calculate some timings for marching over slow roads, but that’s probably a late 1942 or early 1943 thing.
The other option is to buy out 2-3 x Divisions + change from China before Chungking is captured. That would need a month of PP for each Division, so maybe a Sep 42 kickoff. A Corps landing on the east India coast to threaten Calcutta from the south should cause a reaction.

Ki-43-Ic Oscar x 80 – the big show today. I remembered to switch some back to CAP tomorrow in and switch targets to sweep and escort a Sally bombing raid on Imphal airfield. Imphal has 5 x allied fighters and 14 x bombers spotted so it probably won’t achieve much. I haven’t used Sallys in anger here for a while so an Imphal air raid is mainly just to do something new to keep the allied Air Marshalls guessing.
I’ve also spotted allied ground movement towards Imphal from both Kohima and Jorhat. I doubt those bases will be completely vacated because the allies know that the IJA Raiding Regts are lurking.

Buy the units in China as they get trashed, it will make them cheaper.

Yes, he seems to know what he’s doing. No rest for his engineers anywhere.
Oh to have supply to burn like that!

Opposing forces are in contact all over the map now so I need to work hard to maintain the initiative.
The tension is definitely building now as if the allies wanted to they could counter attack me somewhere in SoPac shortly, especially if the allied navies have combined.

Currently playing my first PBEM, no house rules Scenario 1 as IJ.

Albacores do well, but then I sink a big AO to salvage the day.

I've just got a hunch that CS has combined all allied carriers in SOPAC.
With Albacores on land in India my new hunch is that he has stocked the RN carriers with USN or USMC units.

Based on the first hunch I was not confident to send a KB raid deep into SOPAC, but feel that the time is now right to invade the western Aleutians.
Once KB is spotted so far north it may prompt the allies to take a few risks in SOPAC or the IO.

Japanese Bombardment attack – with the success of deliberate attacks at roughly 1:1 raw AV odds in the south, I might roll the dice on a deliberate attack in North China soon to see what happens. I'm finding it very interesting trying to guess what the allies are up to as there is so little solid intelligence for the IJ player to go on. A human player that I don't know anything about is so unpredictable!
The only intel I can gather is from long range search patrols, subs and relatively short range recon.

Most likely the allied CVs all stay hidden through 42, but most dangerous is that they are all together somewhere waiting to launch a flank speed strike. I doubt they are all up in NORPAC but I will soon find out.

As I've spotted a lot of allied CAs from Sydney to Baker Island and today near Pearl Harbour, I am assuming that CVs won't be too far behind them. All guesswork of course...

I've ordered 90th Infantry Regt back to Manchukuo to rebuild, which prompted a review of the garrison forces.
The reorganised garrison locations are in the image below.

Imperial Manchukuo Army (IMA) provides the garrisons for all cities in Manchukuo.
1 x Division 84AV
5 x District Divisions 280AV each - garrisons for the main urban hexes
1 x Guards Brigade 56AV
4 x Infantry Brigades 56AV each
1 x Cavalry Division 84AV
7 x Cavalry Brigades 42AV each - Cavalry units are deployed forward in the clear terrain as a screening force while the main defensive lines will be built around IJA infantry and artillery fortifications in the complex terrain.

Kwantung Army, IJA troops provide the border fortresses and field Armies.
Units that are greyed out have been temporarily transferred to China.
Kwantung Army future reinforcements are shown on the right, with the opposing Soviet Armies also shown.

Japanese forces CAPTURE Warazup !!! This “ends” the first Burma campaign as the last allied base to fall, but the situation is far from stable. There are a lot of British, Indian and also the better part of 1st Australian Corps in NE India.
There are also 19 Chinese units spotted in the Yennan Mountains moving towards Burma. The Chinese should be low or out of supply, but I am starting to think I might need to scratch together a blocking force, and start bombing them from the air to slow them down and wear them out. Most likely the Chinese will head towards Ledo and central India, to sit in well supplied training camps and fill out their massive TOEs. I doubt they will be heading towards Lashio or Myitkyina, but if they did it would be dangerous not to have about at least a Regt at each to defend them.
Only two days until I can buy 52nd Div out of Japan. The pre-war plan was to send it to Burma, but I am leaning towards sending it to the Aleutians instead. I’ll have to come up with something else to defend the Burma-China border.

The IJN Jake Force is coming along nicely. Another 24 plane unit will swap their Petes for Jakes in the next few days. Lots of the groups that received trainee pilots in Jan/Feb are now approaching mid-40s experience on their way to 70 naval search skill. Nearly all FP units that have Jakes are flying naval search missions with experience of 50+ but naval search generally in the 60s and relatively low ASW skills. The units that still have Petes will stay as on map training units. Once they train up their pilots to 50+ experience, 70 naval search they will start on ASW training. It will take months, but over time I will swap out any Jake pilots that don’t have 70 ASW skill and send them back to Japan to one of the “training” units to complete their ASW course.

The current situation in central China and the plan for the next few weeks.
The boundary between NCAA and the South China Area Army (codename Korea Army) is the Yangtze River.

NCAA Reserve Divs (35th and 110th) will mop up around Ankang.
12th Army will generally remain on the defensive with 32nd Div and 27th Div attached from NCAA Reserve, but it will try a deliberate attack in the northern mountains shortly. Other 12th Army Bdes will press forward from around Ichang.
1st Army will remain on the defensive, but the IM Bdes will conduct some limited local offensive ops near Yenan.

The focus for Korea Army now is Kweiyang-Kunming.
HQ 20th Army with 1, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 14 Divs (units in grey) are all moving to Kweiyang.
The axis of advance for each of 11th, 13th, 20th and 23rd Armies is shown.

11th Army has four Divs available for the advance: 3,6,13,34 are all with the HQ and will advance NW
13th Army has two Divs: 15th and 17th will move to Kweiyang then NW, moving towards an assault river crossing into the open terrain just west of Chungking.
20th and 23rd Armies with HQ Korea Army will advance to Kunming before splitting.
20th Army has the 7 x Divs mentioned above. They will help clear all roads between Kunming and Chungking, then join the assault river crossing with 13th Army.
23rd Army has three Divs: 19th, 20th and 51st. It will advance to capture Tsuyung and Paoshan to link up with the Burma Area Army, as well as send a Div to clear the slow road NE towards Chengtu.

i'd be careful about splitting your army yet. Securing the CK plain is more important that taking Kunming. blocking the route to Kunming is sufficient. You want CK and the rest of the bases in the plain taken and it is a long slog to do so. You have to cycle units in and out a lot, which means more units makes it happen sooner which is better. Better both in terms of total cost in supply to take CK and the fact that once you do a LOT of units are now freed up for other objectives (like steam rolling Kunming if you wish). dragging out the conquest of CK is the allied objective here. don't help the allies meet their objective.

Thanks Pax.
I already own Kunming thanks to the paras of the Raiding Regts, but there are about 20x Chinese units marching around it that if they get to India could become a big problem for me later. I want to slow them down and damage them before they reach India.
I do want to capture Chungking and Chengtu before I destroy them so they don’t resurrect.

Chungking airfield now has 100 damage with about 130k troops spotted in about 24 units.
I haven’t destroyed many Chinese units yet so half of those should be HQ and support units.

23rd Army should be able to clear the Kweiyang-Kunming Road on its own now, so 20th Army could advance directly to the Chungking plain.
Before it all moves into Chungking it will capture Chengtu first. That might prompt a withdrawal of Chinese forces in north China which will allow NCAA units to advance and join the fight.

One other aim of getting 23rd Army to Kunming is that it would free up the Southern Army reserve troops currently there as a garrison that equate to a reinforced Div: 1x IM Bde + 1x IM Regt + 1x Infantry Regt.

OPERATIONAL REPORT FOR May 12, 42
Bima is occupied by the Japanese
Search E13A1 Jake destroyed by CAP at (117,147) – a large allied CV task force is spotted. No strikes launched as nothing is in range. I really don’t know what it will do tomorrow now that it has been spotted, but I have ordered most ships away from Tulagi to Shortlands and left a few ships at Tulagi under about 72 Zeros on close CAP. If the USN/RN (assumed) strike at Tulagi or the ships there I should shoot a lot of them down.

Damaged G4M1 Betty from 4th Ku K-1 crashes, pilot reported killed – from the failed torpedo attack. At least the site of Bettys launching torpedoes might make CS pause and think, but with all of them missing that might give him confidence to advance further and roll the dice against them again.

13 May 42 reports

Post by jdsrae »

Allied carriers vanish, likely south. The Bettys may have spooked them, or they could be hiding in a thunderstorm...
I’ve started withdrawal of Luganville by air as I can’t defend it right now.l, and I suspect more bombardments are coming.
KB and co remain undetected, closing in on the Aleutians.
Details to follow.

Sapporo expands airfield to size 2
Paramushiro-jima expands airfield to size 3
Adak Island expands port to size 5 – the Aleutians will be an interesting little sideshow for a while. I am keen to see what the allies have defending Adak Island. I won’t attack it directly just yet, but have just bought out 52nd Div which is now 50% prepared for it.
Lunga expands airfield to size 2 – that might help keep the allies a little further away from Lunga/Tulagi for a while.

Sasebo 5th SNLF arrives at Nagasaki/Sasebo – will move to SWAF. I have set it to prepare for Diamond Harbour in the vague hope that this is picked up by allied Sig Int. That might spark some more allied forces to move back from the Assam and Arakan fronts.
14th Naval Guard Unit arrives at Yokohama/Yokosuka – will move to Cagayan as the garrison, which will free up the 10th Special Base Force (from memory) to return to Tarakan.
