After a pause with some e-mails and forum postings re. the way out of proportion deadly night attacks game continues. As it was an error I took the losses, the Allied agreed to not attack the hard hit base and groups (moral in the 50ties, some dead pilots too) at Torokina for 5 turns. We made a rule in effect from 7/1943 (I forgot what it said and hope the Allied player has them ready in July).

- 2 of our subs hit hard but not sunk by enemy AMs and Fletchers... one more sub hit only once - their ASW getting worse day after day. We get some hits by air asw mostly. I dedicated quite a lot of planes to this task, many older army bombers like Sallies (the best), Lillies (are ok but small bomb size) and Anns (carry only 1 bomb and shorter range but the best 1E bomber for smaller airfields). Navy planes also contribute as there are not many viable, low risk targets for them anyway. Floatplanes rarely hit subs, so most have been set to night and day search.

- 1 PB and 1 LB lost to subs

- US bombers turn back to day bombing and hit Munda and Vella, at Munda are some better AA guns which damage a few bombers every once in a while

The scen2 "presents" Shimakaze class DDs are very good even in comparison to Fletchers - however I lost all 4 of them in the TF which was the worst loss for quite some time. Also a bit air protection would have been good I nectlected that. As 2 of the damaged ships ended up 1 hex from the Shortlands base. And one not damaged also sunk [:(]

Allies captured everything below the Shortlands - we have 2 major bases there. We have a huge base at Rabaul (maxed out), with up to 700 air support. We have a medium base at Woodlark a bit exposed as an outpost. We have some other small outpost on the islands below Milne bay, which itself is a medium base. PM and Buna are also medium. The Allies took the southern most island of this chain meanwhile as well Horn Is. All of Australia is back in Allied hands as well one base in India (name?). We have in India the group of bases outside Calcutta and this itself is a major base, just like Magwe and Rangoon. We have outposts at Cocos is. and Port Blair.

We have all the Marianas and Marshall is. down to Tarawa, most are only outposts. We have Nauru + Ocean still. We did not care for the Aleutian islands. Outpost at Marcus Is.

Our economy is pretty strong with all the stuff captured in China and India. Our convois in the last 2-3 weeks are good protected we have not lost many large or medium tankers or AOs. We get mostly hits by air on the Allied subs, the ships ASW still sucks even with Type2 DCs except in the shallows.

Our research focussed mostly on fighters we have got the 1st George + Frank by now. We just got the 2nd Jack, we do not put research anymore into Zero or Oscar. Aim is every land based IJN sqr to have Jack or George. We still have quite strong CV forces and also some BBs (3 sunk I believe, 1 Nagato, 1 Yamato,1 Fuso). We have a strong CA force. We lost too many DDs for my taste (esp. the Shimakazes above). teh leftover CLs are on the frontlines as kind of expendable ships, which only can hope to get torp hits as their gun armament and armor is too weak. Agano class is good looking but I can not find a use from other than high risk mission where a loss does not hurt so much, but maybe you have an idea for a better use of Agano/Oyodo ?? Allies lost lots of CVs, BBs and (older) CLs/CAs. But they get now the modern BBs, CLs and DDs, how to combat best the Fletcher surge?

06. June - 10.June 43

Allied thrust in India is aimed at Ranchi so it now is clear. Also an armor unit was sent to the hex with the rail below probably to block our rail movement. Which worked, our units were stopped there in their rail cars. We flew in some AT and mountain guns to Ranchi, but it turned out that our defense was strong enough. They also had sent some small armor units to Rangpur and to the rail line behind and below which also stopped movement. Nice tactic but int he end was not good enough for the massive and experienced defense of the IJA in India...

Also Rossel Is. was invaded a very small outpost of ours but it lead some battles.

3 APDs, had delivered cargo to Woodlark, were diverted to hit the landing fleet at Rossel. But 2 Fletchers showed up and sank 2 APD, only 1 escaped. Later the Allies put some air to catch those 2 APDs (he thought only 1 was sunk) but they flew into my fighters at Toro and Shortlands. Sadly most of the Avengers withdraw before battle.

Yup agreed, if they at least put some 12cm AA on them - some better armor too and they would be usefull. I guessed they were meant as some kind of flagship. However the IJN has some big DDs too which could serve as "leaders". Even a Yugumo is better as the Agano except in tonnage... they have 6x12cm (which is a DP gun, so better then the 15cm in general) and much more 25mm (semi useful) AA, 4 x DCs and as much torps or even more.

One can see neither me nor my opponent has lost a bigger warship for quite while, the big losses were all in 42 except we sank 3 x CVE in Jan 43. We also lost 3 CVE (all in 42). We got 2 messages for Allied CVEs "unsunk". Meaning now first Essex/Indepence plus a bunch of CVE arriving for the Allies in 7 or latest 8 /43 they should be able to put a good carrier arm to sea again.

Here is the list of latest lost cruisers both sides sorted for newest first, I guess should all be true...we lost a lot of CLs, but they are not the best ships anyway, still hurtful.

Losses of DDs were higher for both sides, but ours hurt more. Especially the Shimakazes.
For APs we are in the lead lost not so many Allies also some bigger ones, but also mostly months ago (12 - 18 VP).
For AKs we lost (only) 6 above 10 VP ones the last months, Allies only small ones, with 2x13 VP one sunk back in March 43 [X(] So no one is really hurt in transports.

63 mines cleared - we have brought some coast guns to Shortlands... but they seem only to hit minesweepers and rarely bombardement ships.. this sucks, cause sometimes our defending ships need some rest/repair etc. When withdrawn small bombardement hits Shortlands for way out too much damage for so few and weak ships. I noticed they got pretty near and were firing also 20mm guns. But these should not have the range to even reach the airfield imho. But it works both ways, our bombardement also effective..but with bigger guns so more realistic.
