Bug: Looking for file in all the wrong places!

Post by cathar1244 »

I see this in the TOAW log file.

"General :UberBitmap : tiles_river_edge (C:\Program Files (x86)\Matrix Games\The Operational Art of War IV\Graphics\tiles_river_edge.bmp) : (00000000)
General :UberBitmap : tiles_river_edge (missing) : (00000000)
General :Directory Search Order
C:\Program Files (x86)\Matrix Games\The Operational Art of War IV\Scenarios\
C:\ ... My Games\The Operational Art of War IV\Scenarios\
C:\ ... My Games\The Operational Art of War IV\Graphics Override\
..."

And on and on. Really clutters the log output.

Is this just old code looking for a .bmp file that is no longer part of the software distribution?

Cheers

Outstanding. [:D]

Also note that it appears to be looking for something that never existed anyway. River tiles on a hex edge.

If duct tape doesn't fix it then you are not using enough duct tape.

I tried to create a zero-byte BMP file named the same - and it didn't crash (on Win10) but on another OS it might be different.

I also created a 1x1 transparent PNG, and it seems to stop the logging of the error messages. The existence of a PNG will override any BMPs it tries to find.

Then again, if you ask me, the game's insistence on constantly logging the Directory Search Order is more problematic from the perspective of cluttering the output... [8|]

Can you upload the 1x1 PNG file? I would like to try that. Funny, game bombed out on me when I tried the 0 byte BMP ... and I have Win10. [&:]

Thanks for the follow-up!

I made a 5 pixel X 5 pixel bmp file of a black square and saved it as the tiles_river_edge.bmp ( 24-bit ) and the error messages went away in the TOAW log file. Thanks for the tip my friend.

@Cathar: Sure, attaching it here. Also attaching a 0-byte BMP in case it works as well for you. When I tested a 0-byte PNG I still found (different) messages in the log indicating something wrong. And expecting a 0-byte non-standard file to work without any issue is kind of a gamble so better to create a proper file.

@Larry: You're welcome. The reason I didn't use BMP myself is that bitmaps have no transparency so would have to guess that the first colour in the index is used for that. Usually #1 is white, but I've seen some with black as well. I guess as long as it's single colour it would work anyway.

Thank you, Shadrach.

ETA: Looks like the .png file helps. The directory search order is shown up front a few times in the log file, but not repeated over and over throughout the combat action log. Easier to read, a good work-around. [8D]

Now we discovered why there aren't rivers on the edges. It cannot find the file. [:D]
