Critical Industries

Eagle Day to Bombing of the Reich is a improved and enhanced edition of Talonsoft's older Battle of Britain and Bombing the Reich. This updated version represents the best simulation of the air war over Britain and the strategic bombing campaign over Europe that has ever been made.

Critical Industries

Post by AFIntel »

Howdy y'all,

As I've read in the "readme" for the patches, Oil Refineries and Oil Storage have no effect on AVGAS. In the original rules, Chemical Factories (CHEM) were listed as "Critical Industry" because they could create fuel shortages. It does not list Synthetic Fuel Refineries as being a "dependent" industry.

QUESTION: In the patched game, does CHEM have any effect at all on AVGAS / sortie generation?

Here's the original passage in the manual regarding CHEM industries:

Chemical Factory (CHEM): Chemical factories are classified
as “critical industries.” Destroying chemical factories (along
with attacks against oil storage facilities and oil refineries)
begins to create a fuel shortage, which in turn reduces the
amount of sorties the Axis can conduct. Damage to chemical
factories also reduces the effectiveness of rubber factories.

Thanks for any insight anyone can give!

Nothing has changed as far as dependancies are concerned. Avgas production from synthfuel plants is still dependant on Chem and the ability to store avgas at storage facilities. Overall economic "shortages" accounts for availability of both avgas and oil stocks.

Only in the BoB's does avgas come from oil refineries.

OK, so as I understand it then:

Avgas production is dependent on CHEM, FUEL, and OILS industries; OILR have no impact on Avgas, but on economic supply only (per the "readme" notes from the patches).

Is that correct?

Thank you!

Yes, that about sums it up. Airbases store some fuel as well, so they might be included similar to OILS.

Bomb an Airbase, or FS it and the Avgas there is destroyed from what I have seen, so if you want them to have an increased demand on AV gas, keep sweeping the Airbases.

I can back that up although I've only seen it destroyed in appreciable quantity by bombing.
Continued attacks will cost far more in aircraft than the possible gains in fuel stocks destroyed. Avgas is distributed only to airbases with aircraft present and thems the ones with plenty of AA guns.

About the AA issue, yeah it is a pain. But if you can get above the AA height, like with Mediums, it does work well. Plus, you sometimes get some damage planes and kills on the ground. Especially if you can hit Night fighter bases.

The AI tends not to put anything bigger than 37mm at its airfields.
I always try to add 6-8 heavies with my reinforced light batteries. FS and FB attack on my airfields are my main concerns.
Air to air losses are 'honourable'. Ground losses really hack me off!

Nice, thanks for the tactical info.

In all the years I've played, it's always been as Allies. So, I don't have a great grasp on what happens "inside the Axis machine" yet.
