For now, we'll have to do without the non-CGI grandeur of ...The Lord of the Rings.
[&:]

The LOTR trilogy that I remember had beaucoup CGI. In hindsight, looking back on the sieges of Minas Tirath and Helm's Deep, the CGI is quite obvious. C'mon man-horses don't fall that way when they get hobbled or hit by an arrow or an olephant! And the way Legolas is obviously *not* firing arrows out of his never-ending quiver! I don't see how you can watch this eye poison!

You're right. It did have CGI. But in the overall scheme of the movie, the CGI was comparatively small - a lot of the orcs, etc., where actors/extras made up. So the feel of the movie is good.

My boys say that it's weird - that the CGI in the LOTR trilogy (early 2000s) looks much better than the CGI used in the later "prequel" Hobbit trilogy. That seems counterintuitive - that CGI effects have gotten worse with the passage of time? Judging by movies like Midway and Dauntless and (apparently) The Greyhound, I'd agree.

That most recent Mad Max movie is another anomaly. It used a bit of CGI (for that big tornado storm, etc.) but a lot of the dramatic effects for vehicles, explosions, etc. were the real thing.

Here she is with her brother. She is wearing a red collar and nothing else . . .

A couple of real cuties, but if those collars don't have stretch sections built in they are on way too tight.

In the picture, her collar is in her mouth it was that loose.

The issues with the Hobbit CGI may rest with the ultra high frame rate they chose to use. There was much discussion on the internet prior to release regarding that aspect and whether, or not, it was a mistake that was going to ruin the product.

Much like nose art on bombers and fighters the 'art' on U-boat conning towers had little to no official controls on it as to size and color. The "Laughing Swordfish" in green was semi-officially adopted by the 9th Flotilla but apparently it was used by many different U-boats. Apparently it also appeared in red and black on the conning towers of other U-boats.

but in the movie, it seems as if it was used to taunt enemy, which is kind of absurd in a stealth vessel, same as having a "phone call" with captain Tom Hanks, c'mon!

that said, I will still watch it

War horror genre, like the film Overlord

I might have read this wrong but are you suggesting Greyhound is in the same category as Overlord? Obviously for the former I can only go on the preview, but I've seen the latter and I do hope that is not what you are suggesting.

Oh, Chickenboy. The graphics. The graphics. Oh, the humanity!

Tom Hanks is such a great actor. I think he produced or directed this. I wish he had insisted upon realism and hadn't settled for anything less. Oh, for something like D-Day in Saving Private Ryan or Dunkirk in Dunkirk.

In twenty years (if the world still exists), movie audiences will look back on this era of movie-making special effects with horror, as we who grew up in the '70s look back on leisure suits and bell bottoms.

Oh, the humanity.

I couldn't agree more!

I won't watch it.

I understand the rationale of those who will - that it's the best we can hope for in these time. They're right, although I suspect from time to time, somebody will come along and get it right.

For now, we'll have to do without the non-CGI grandeur of Doctor Zhivago, Gettysburg, Schindler's List, and The Lord of the Rings. And wonder if they'll ever be able to make movies like that again, given the labor component of six zillion extras and on-site filming expense.

But we can still enjoy excellently made "small sets" that don't require CGI. I can pop in my DVD of Twelve Angry Men or go back and see Knives Out for a third time.

But I can't sit through video games. I don't know if my way of viewing movies is unique or ubiquitous, but I become immersed in them. I love that feeling. But there's no immersion when the graphics stink to high heaven.

absolutely agree... looks all wrong and to top the idiocy is that phone call of the German sub captain... omfg what's wrong with all those movie makers?[8|]

Not the same genre really but some of the scenes are more from a horror film or parody like Iron Sky.

For some movies, you just have to check reality at the door, sit back, eat your popcorn, and enjoy the ride. [;)]

I like Tom Hanks as an actor and my wife likes Tom Hanks as an actor. It'll probably be the only "war movie" I can get her to attend at a theatre with me. [:D][:D][:D]

Think of the story and not the props, whether or not they were computer generated.
