Move to the hot, humid tropics!
Hong Kong University pathology professor John Nicholls said that he suspected three factors would potentially kill the virus, according to the transcript of a private conference call in early February.

"Three things the virus does not like: 1. Sunlight, 2. Temperature and 3. Humidity," Nicholls said in remarks that were leaked on social media. "The virus can remain intact at 4 degrees Celsius (39 degrees Fahrenheit) or 10 degrees C (50 F)...But at 30 degrees C (86 degrees F) then you get inactivation."

The CDC has cautioned that not enough is known about the virus to say for sure that weather will affect the spread, but a spokesperson said, "I’m happy to hope that it [the threat] goes down as the weather warms up."

That's the best news yet. We are only a couple of weeks from the unrelenting onslaught of hot humid summer weather in Florida.

We bypass Go, do not collect $200 and go directly to Summer from what passes for a Winter here. Spring lasts two weeks and started last week. Florida defies the astronomical seasons defined by solstices and equinoxes.

Just remember, don't crank up the air conditioner! Sweat if you have too.

Enjoy the delicious shrimp and the wild hog on the grill!

Someone was wondering earlier how it does on surfaces and how to disinfect. Here's some info:

great info! thx
"Sunlight" = UV, so no glas between the sun and the object. It's amazing effective under right conditions, the old hospitals were built in a way that doctors had to walk outside between the blocks for that reason (until some advisers saw this as lost working time...). Maybe just leave public transports a station or two earlier and walk the rest by foot.
Agree on the air conditioner - if some collegues disagree, destroy it secretly.

How to Make Your Own Disinfectant Bleach Solution
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends using a 1:10 solution for disinfecting surfaces and objects that may have been tainted by contagions. Be sure to follow these steps exactly to make a safe and effective bleach solution.

https://www.verywellhealth.com/make-you ... ion-998274

For larger areas:

Cleaning and Sanitizing with Bleach after an Emergency
There is also a chart in the web page:
Using Cleaning & Sanitizing Products

First, wash surfaces with soap and warm, clean water to remove dirt and debris. Next, sanitize surfaces with household bleach.

It is critical to read and follow the safety instructions on any product you use. Below are the most important safety guidelines when using sanitizing products:

Never mix bleach with ammonia or any other cleaner.
Wear rubber or other non-porous boots, gloves, and eye protection.
Try not to breathe in product fumes. If using products indoors, open windows and doors to allow fresh air to enter.

Does "inactivation" mean destruction of the virus or just dormancy?

I don't know. I think that it might break down but the link did not state any more than that.

I noticed last night that countries along or near the equator have an unusually low number of deaths (and, for that matter, positive results). Costa Rica, Brazil, Algeria, Singapore, and Malaysia, for instance. I figured that was due, in part, to the disease being relatively new to Western Hemisphere countries, but it seems to be that way almost across the map (with a few exceptions). There are a large number of cases in some of those countries, like Singapore, but that might be explained by extensive pre-epidemic travel between those countries and China?

It also seems like the virus has three generations: China, Middle East & Europe, and Western Hemisphere. In the West, the number of "recoveries" is very low compared to Spain, Italy, China, etc. We're just getting started - too soon to begin to see meaningful numbers of recoveries.

Ah interesting about the sunlight temperature. I had heard earlier that a concern was that it didn't seem to be impacted very much by the temperature. But maybe that was just relative to the flu and other illnesses.

World Health Organization Declares COVID-19 a "Pandemic." Here's What That Means

https://time.com/5791661/who-coronaviru ... claration/

"The World Health Organization (WHO) on March 11 declared COVID-19 a pandemic, pointing to the over 118,000 cases of the coronavirus illness in over 110 countries and territories around the world and the sustained risk of further global spread.

“This is not just a public health crisis, it is a crisis that will touch every sector,” said Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO director-general, at a media briefing. “So every sector and every individual must be involved in the fights.”"

Really excellent interview, thanks for sharing! The message is stark though: 48 million hospitalizations! That's chaos.

Yes, but as the medical scientists are learning more about it and the drugs that can be used to combat it I think that there will be fewer hospitalizations. China is even taking plasma from people who are cured and using that to try and help people infected since the plasma should contain antibodies to the Corona virus.

AFAIK the drugs for treatment are for the critical cases, which are hospitalized.

Fingers crossed for a vaccine, but that task is much easier said than done on any short time scale.

Kull you have to be an accountant or something or just love numbers! Thanks for showing that because numbers and math show reality of the issue.

Nah, he just plays WITP. Wouldn't be surprised if he had a moonlight gaming career in EVE Online, either, as it's commonly called Spreadsheets Online.
