Where to buy?

Post by Alex Gee »

Hey,

I'm one of those guys that doesn't like to buy stuff off of the internet, if I can help it. I've been looking around for this game at some local stores but can not find it. (Did see Korsun Pocket at EB). Did any of you not get this game off the Matrix Games website, or not off the internet at all? If so where did you find it? I live near Seattle, Washington USA, I did a search on the subjuect and only saw one post from a guy in Germany who didn't buy it off the website. If push comes to shove I will buy direct from Matrix Games. One question though, this game is getting a little old, yet its still 50 bucks? aw man I was hoping for a little discount, haha.

I've seen it at Fry's Electronics, I think.. give them a try, if you have one near you. 50$ is definatly still pretty steep, I agree.

I think the logic behind the 50$ price tag is a die hard wargamer intrested in the subject will definatly buy UV if the price is within reason, but a casual gamer probably wouldnt buy it even if it was 30$. So why not get that extra 20 bucks from someone who's going to buy it anyway.

I bet they're waiting for WitP to release before the UV price drops, and who knows when that'll be, it could be a long wait. For what it's worth though, if you like the subject of UV you will not be dissapointed. I love reading through history books and looking at the UV to see the same units in the same places and such. If I payed a dollar for every hour I spent with UV, I'd be up arround 500 bucks.

My opinion is it's worth it, if you have a strong intrest in PTO WW2.

Alex,

I picked up UV from www.chipsbits.com about a month ago for $39.95 +sh which will see you about $45. Still worth every penny. The way I see it...if I pay $50 for a game, and I spend 100 hours playing it, then I am spending 50 cents an hour to entertain myself (please, no remarks) - thats money well spent. (What I hate is spending $50 for a game, and it becomes a coaster in less than an hour because it $ucks...I research them now)

I can only imagine that the success of the game is the reason why it has not dropped in price as much as you would think. Other games will start high, and you find them in the $10 bin 4 months later...

If you are looking for references, I have been ordering the hard to find games from www.chipsbits.com exclusively for 3 years now. NEVER had a problem, and delivery is timely. They are in MA, and I am in PA...took 2 days US Mail - from order on a friday afternoon to delivery on monday to get UV - I would imagine it taking 3 to 4 for you being in WA.

Good luck, and hope you get your copy soon. Excellent game.

I had to get my copy in the used games section. I had looked all over and did not find it any where else.

Thanks guys for the replies and help, I'll probably order it next week, not sure form where yet though. I've been looking at UV for a long time and I'm sure I'll enjoy it. I usually don't buy games on a whim unless they are in the bargain bin for $10 and its something I've heard of before. Anyway, great forum here, the fact that I got helpfull replies from the kind of question I asked shows it. I'll be sure to get involved once I get the game.

You have to remember that a game like UV has a limited appeal. It really is designed for only the most serious wargamers and I think Matrix knew well in advance that there would be a certain limit to the number of sales. For that reason, production runs are limited so there is not necessarily a surplus of copies-therefore the high prices and less of a need to discount the game. Generally, the games in the bargin bins represent unsupported games or games that are long past their prime but still with a surplus of stock.

In spite of the focus on WITP, Matrix spent a great amount of time supporting UV. There have been many patches and these require man hours and pay checks. Why discount the game? Dumping the title now will not greatly increase the interest and by keeping a tight control over inventory and quality, Matrix can continue to sell the game at a high price. That is good for them and in the long run good for us.

Although, I am not adverse to looking for a good price. I am really Ok with paying top dollar and feel it is the least we can do to support the small compaines such as Matrix, HPS, Battlefront, etc. that are leading the wargaming industry today and producing the best products (not to mention the best support).

Back when the big companies were producing computer wargames, I almost gave up purchasing games as they tended to be poorly made and poorly supported after the initial production run and sales campaign. In my opinion, we have entered the second golden age of computer war games, now that smaller companies have found thier market. The quality titles that have come on the market in the last three years speak for itself.

Well put crsutton.

Considering the sheer number of hours of enjoyment, it represents a tremendous value. Bought version 1.0 in June-July last year, and am still playing heavily-6 PBEMs ongoing.

I also noticed that the PX at FT Belvoir is carrying UV, as well as Korsun Pocket. Getting AAFES to carry thier titles is a good move.

Hey man I agree

Post by Alex Gee »

Yeah, I agree too, I will buy it from Matrix Games Website, just not yet. School is just starting up, and I've got to settle into my new place and all. I know the wargaming scene. I bought Combat Mission from Battlefront a few weeks after it came out. Money matters though, and I'll have to wait, maybe a week maybe more. Bargain hunting isn't bad, I've picked up some great games that way, Sub Command, Commandos 2 (I know it isn't "wargaming" but I think its fun and thats what matters).

What I meant is that I don't buy games unless I know they are going to be good, I don't go to the store and just buy games, unless its for 10 bucks and its something I am interested in or have considered purchasing before.

I guess the point you were making is that we need to support the companies that make these "niche" games, and I agree. Hell I've put a fair amount of my hard earned money to these smaller operations like matrix and battlefront. The last little part of my first post was more of a joke than anything. I know you weren't flaming me or anything, so I guess I'm taking a bit of a defensive pousture to your post, so in closing all I will say is your absolutely right. Oh and I won't reply any more to this thread, its lived its usefullness to me.

Thanks Again

Gee
