switching from Hot seat to online

World in Flames is the computer version of Australian Design Group classic board game. World In Flames is a highly detailed game covering the both Europe and Pacific Theaters of Operations during World War II. If you want grand strategy this game is for you.

switching from Hot seat to online

Post by CanInf »

My guess is there is no way to take a hot seat game and transfer it to an online game?

Assuming you mean NETPLAY, it can be done, but has some risks. I suggest that you start a new game if that is what you plan to do as there is a fair bit of setup required in the background by the technology to establish the session. It is less risky to update the values to go from Netplay to Solitaire, but there are still work around required. It is better not to go down that path.

You can switch from hotseat to PBEM with no difficulty, though. Just means an extra click now and again to get past the announcements of which side is to do something.

Thanks that is good idea. I could even share my screen and do it via Skype, or something like that... oHH here is an idea, give the other players control of my comp remotely... that could work. We are in 1943, so it would be shame to give up on teh game and restart in netply.

The saved game data for Hot Seat and NetPlay are almost identical. The only tricky bit is making sure that player names are the same in the GAM file as they are for the players logging into the NetPlay forum.

Since the GAM files are simple ASCII text they can be edited using NotePad or any other comparable ACSII text editor.

Fire up the Hot Seat game and use the drop down Help menu to make sure the player names are correct (re: About the Current Game).

If they do not match the players' names for logging into the NetPlay forum, then you will need to do a Search and Replace text in the GAM file so it has the correct names.

The only other change is in the first line of text in the GAM file: change the 1 (HotSeat) at the end of the line to a 2 (NetPlay). Send the other player a copy of the modified GAM file and you should be able to restore the game and start playing using NetPlay.

None of this works for Solitaire games because the number of players is different.

IIRC there are two places in the game file where the player names appear. Hopefully the names are unique enough that you won't get a lot of hits when doing search and replace.
