The Positive Corona Virus Thread.

Post by z1812 »

I thought I would start a thread where we can share how we are spending our time, when so many of us are at home waiting for this sad situation to resolve.

My Wife and I are going for walks everyday and car rides now and again, just to get out of the house.

We are in touch with Family and friends through Skype and Facetime. Although conversation and human contact are not the same when done digitally, it is still satisfying to see and speak to those important to us.

Aside from housework, I play guitar a couple of hours a day. I am reading a book I started a while ago about longevity........and of course gaming.

I am playing Tigers on the Hunt, Battlefield 5, Combat Mission and Field of Glory at the moment.

Occasionally we watch some TV. We are lucky enough to have a garden so when the weather is mild we can sit outside and enjoy a cup of tea.

What is everyone else doing? I hope all of you, and your families are doing well.

What is the lock down situation where you are?

We entered a heightened phase of lockdown yesterday. Not something I imagine any democratic politician is comfortable with - but too many people in this country don't seem to want to take this seriously or heed advice that is meant to save lives...

I've been working from home (mandatory) for one week now. I have to say I dislike it intensely. I miss the interaction with people. The lack of travelling though does mean a little more time for gaming (World In Flames) and history [:)]

Mrs w is still working as she is in an essential service and she has a letter authorising her travel in case she is stopped. I feel bad that she is in the front line.

We are going to go for walks as much as possible - but not sure how the new restrictions will make themselves felt.

My elder little warspite is back from Uni. She's been told there will be no face to face lectures/lessons next term and exams will be online. She is supposed to be going to Europe to study for a term in September. That is up in the air - and given the country she was going to - seems certain not to happen.

My younger warspite is the one I feel most sorry for. She is in her last year of school and it was going to be a big one; apart from her exams which aren't happening, she like so many thousands, have the uncertainty of how the examiners are going to grade them. She was luckier than many as her last music exam was held just a couple of days before all further such exams were cancelled - but for many all that practice and effort will be wasted. She was looking forward to her first holiday abroad with her friends (mum and dad are less sorry about that now being cancelled [;)]. As her last year before uni she was so looking forward to her last two music tours to europe with the orchestra she plays in, her last school musical (she has been in in every production since she started in year 7), her last dance show, her last music festival at the RFH. All gone.

But the important thing is health. Myself and Mrs w are both in the 'at risk' bracket so all we can do is keep heeding the advice and hoping that this thing comes to an end.

I still have to work, no lockdown.... I'm in an "Essential Service" industry.

HOWEVER - the traffic on the roads now is bloody brilliant! Less than half the traffic, no road ragers, people waving even! [:D]

Life here is as it always is, with the exception of there is no shopping in my day (nothing is open).

It's too early for biking, or I'd likely be on it most of the time.
But I have been trying to busy myself with my models. I've managed to get a few kits done to assembled state, but the weather needs to be warmer for airbrushing (open windows). I can report, that the Tamiya Bird cage Corsair kit in 48th scale, is one of the best engineered kits I have ever had the pleasure to assemble. Part fit is unusually perfect. Almost zero reason for putty to ever be involved. I have had similar fun working on a Mid production Tamiya Tiger in 35th scale. Not all kits are equal, these are more recent products though.

I've watched a number of films. I'm a big Jason Stratham fan (god that man is gorgeous to look at :) ).

I've talked a lot about the virus on Facebook. But I have a policy. For every serious post, I have to match it with 3 funny/silly/cute posts. So there has been a lot of excessively cute posts (usually asian girls singing/dancing). A lot of Hatsune Miku.

The lockdown is really only just fully coming into effect now, with more mandatory business closings.
But my lack of going out, has been matched with a more limited diet, and I have lost a few pounds.
My lack of wandering (using up daylight), has resulted in me getting more done around the home.

But it has been rough on me, as I am a very social person. I've had a senior friend Sue come over and watch films with me a good bit.
You sure gain an appreciation for a lot of life's little things we take for granted.
I've missed out on a lot of seemingly unimportant social gatherings. No meetings, no church, no just sitting at a Burger King people watching.
I'd go totally loopy without internet I suspect.

For us life is pretty normal. My wife is essential and has a certified letter in case she is stopped. I have worked from home for six years so not noticing anything different.

A huge city truck pulled up and parked in the street to my front and the driver got out (no mask) and backed the backhoe off the trailer and whizzed down the street, have no idea that that is all about. There are, I am guessing 25-40% more cars parked in the street or in the driveways.

Our state is under 'shelter-in-place' orders and the National Guard has been mobilized and is active for 60 days (heard it from a friend that is in the NG from our local Bible study, which has been canceled).

I still feel positive that this is not going to be any worse then the flu as far as fatalities go. Last year in the United States there was 80,000 deaths during the 2018-2019 Flu season with over 45 million having the flu.

I believe its wise to use common sense in personal hygiene and to be careful and take care of the elder but see no reason to panic or spread fear.

I'm not sure this is a positive story but this has fragmented our family.

The good news is I've worked for myself for over 15 years so the dynamics of working at home are pretty well known (and my wife has done so for the last 3). Bad news is that both the businesses I run to make a living are in terminal collapse.

More practically, we have 2 elderly mothers. Mine is in a nursing home in Sheffield (ie quite a long way from where I live), Johanna's lives just outside Amsterdam in her own home. Our horrible assumption is we probably will never see both of them again. We have one daughter in Utrecht and one in Newcastle. And my wife is just recovering from breast cancer - fortunately she finished her radiotherapy at the end of last year.

Its impractical to go to the Netherlands and not clear if we could get back if we did.

Add on, Johanna and our Utrecht based daughter are struggling with the delight of having to apply to stay in their respective homes due to the consequences of Brexit.

Postive bit - at the moment no-one in our extended family has caught this. And finally the UK is taking it seriously.

@ warspite, I am in Toronto. The Province of Ontario and the City have declared a State of Emergency. Non-essential services have been shut down, and like many jurisdictions Schools and certain government services have been closed. The streets are mostly empty and the majority of people seem to understand the seriousness of the situation.

@ loki, Sorry to know of your problems. When existing Family concerns coincide with Unforeseen, and serious situations, it is very difficult.

Well, I quit working years ago. I tried going back to school but that did not work out. So I just lay around, play with the new kitties, play games, and read. But I am moving to a new town with better bus service. When the downstairs common area including kitchen is open, I can go downstairs and drink coffee that someone else has made. I will make it if necessary.

So, I will still lay on the floor and play computer games. No bed but the floor seems good for my back. Now, if the kittens will quit kneading my armpits at 3 or 4 am . . .

The Governor of my state issued a stay the frak home order the other day, like so many other states in the US. My organization, DOH, had already placed the majority of the work force on WFH status the previous week. I'm a software engineer, so working from home is no different than being at work, except with fewer interruptions. I may actually be more productive! For now, the order is scheduled to be lifted on April 10th. It can be extended if the rates in my area go up, only time will tell.

On a lighter note, I now don't have to make any excuses to find time for gaming! I have an on-going campaign in BSG, FOG:E and I need to get caught up on my WITP:AE campaign, I left it at Feb/42 and am busy trying to keep a clear path from Pearl to Oz. There are others on the list that I want to get around to before April 10th -- it'll be here way too soon.

My store shut down on Friday. The company is going to pay us for the next two weeks. After that we can use sick and vacation pay to "stretch it out". Not sure what they are going to do in the way of health insurance going forward after that.

My only down side is that I am in the high risk group. Over sixty and had congestive heart failure. Along with that, it is allergy season and much of my allergy reactions are similar to two out of the three symptoms of the virus.
I wash my hands like crazy and use wipes on everything.
Go figure the battery in my thermometer died and there is not one battery to be had any where. Thermometer batteries are like TP. LOL! [8|]

I live in the "ground zero" area of Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. We were the first to be shut down. Though, I was able to get an appointment to have my car inspected tomorrow.
See, I'm already planning for what to do for tomorrow? [;)]

I am mostly entertained by my PBEM JT/CS games. I also do a little movie watching. Some reading. And, taking the dog for nicer walks than he is normally used to.
My wife works in an essential business. My son who lives a few miles from us is also in an essential service business. It's nice that they are both employed.
I feel for all those who are not.

Hard to be positive, or even focus on something at this time. My sister is in the hospital right after my mom passed away. She has also givin positive due to being the last to be with my mom. As a positive note, she has a minor pneumonia and no other side health issues that could degrade her due to CV-19, but she´s 61 and in the hospital so I can only but worry. If she goes, I would be alone as my dad passed away two years ago, but I have hope.

With the lockdown, I and my girlfriend were the only one´s at my moms funural due to restrictions which only made everything even more sad. Due to the lockdown we can´t go for walks and don´t have a porch or patio, we live in a small apartment, so that option is discarted for us which does make a big differance in quality of life right know.

Aside from the above, the sadness just get´s bigger as I see/read how all this is being handle! Wont go into details but I hope everybody will remember how bad this is going when they look back at how the system works! Those who are really in the frontline are not being rewarded (lack of supplys) by goverments and every day citizens are proving that there´s way´s to remedy some of this buy creating there own mask, gel´s, protective screens ect. through household items or 3D printers, donations ect. The response is so unhuman by goverments at this age that it all adds up to more sadness. Nurses had to assist families by handing there smartphones to those who were dying due to the CV so they could give there last goodbey, due to restrictions of visits! The replica that goverments all over the world are following really bother´s me, in a sense that has no logic, and overall very strange that they all follow the same pattren, and it´s not due to Chinas model.

I try to think on other things but it´s not easy. Would play some games but I can´t think on killing/shooting at anything at this time, even if it´s a cardboard counter! Only games I try to play right now are Survisland and Space Engineers. Makes you think why most games are so violent. Can´t play guitar or listen to music, and it´s hard for me to focus while I read, so not much can keep me from thinking on something else.

Sorry but this is just how it is on the other side of the fence. Enjoy all you can of what you can, and make sure you don´t forget that it´s not that easy for others. Today there was a tribute to those who died in the Germanwings Incident, they too could not do what they wanted, but it´s a remainder that people die due to human stupidity! My prayers are with them too.
