Update path for Allied Planes and ships

Post by HvMoltke »

Hi
A question to the "Longtime AEplayers"

Q-Ball opened this thread:
https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=4780813

Does this apply also to the upgrade path of Allied units?

I know that the Allies have resources in abundance, but I like to go a reasonable upgrade path.

KEEP ALL WELL AND FIT

However, with Player Defined Upgrades (PDU) toggled On, the Allied player has considerable flexibility in altering the set upgrade paths of air frames.

I have to be more specific

It is possible to convert ships and upgrade aircraft.
Which upgrade is a good idea and which is not. Same with conversion, like the SS Nautilus

You are asking someone to write a 1000 page treatise listing all the benefits/drawbacks for every choice.
Narrow your request to one or two aircraft models or ship classes.

On Nautilus & Narwhal - they can convert to SSTs or they can stay as anti-ship subs.
SST - very useful to get supply to cut-off units on islands. Can also carry paratroops to land on vacant islands or bases and take them. Can pick-up isolated troops from a non-base coastal hex to save a cadre for rebuilding.
Patrol sub - rather large for the job so perhaps easier to spot and hit with depth charges, bombs or shells. Do not carry as many torps as Gato subs. Less range IIRC. Can carry Mk 10 mines but those are in short supply. Torps might be Mark 10, which are explosively weak but more reliable than the Mark 14s. Can still carry a bit of supply. All in all a mediocre sub.

Some ships have Upgrades and/or Conversions available.
Aircraft do have upgraded models which become available at Set times during the game....GP

Thanx BBfanboy

I see, it seems to be not a simple answer.
For Japan there is a logical path, with some discussion about the best way.
I will go on with try & error for the Allies

Pay close attention to the PP cost of changing models. E.G., Australia's near-useless Wirraway can be converted early to the long-ranged Hudson III, but the PP cost is prohibitive. There are other choices too but most of them are costly too. I use them mostly for training and ASW/Nav Search around ports.
IRL the Aussies used them to haul kegs of beer under the wing ...

Another general thought- the Allies are dreadfully short of aircraft of all kinds for the first 8 months or so. Many players figure it is best to use up the old model aircraft in combat rather than relegate them to training early on. You do need to keep a cadre of the air unit to upgrade later unless you want to pay PP to buy it back months after it is destroyed.
