The situation in the Burma / NE India theatre

9 July orders notes, NE India Force command arrangements

LGEN Nakazawa, commanding 15th Army, has arrived at hex 60,30 on the Imphal-Kohima Road with 56th/B RCT in company. IGHQ is concerned that the recent poor performance of 33rd Division is due to LGEN Sakurai’s questionable leadership ability (rating of 44). LGEN Sakurai holds more political power than the other LGENs in Burma, but if he doesn’t clear the road with the next attack, 33 Political Points will be spent to replace him. LGEN Hoshino is standing by to take command of 33rd Division.

LGEN Takeshita takes command of 53rd Division at Imphal, with LGEN Baba returning to the General Staff. LGEN Baba performed well, however the best and most aggressive commanders are needed on this front. 53rd Division starts planning to capture Silchar one hex to the NW.

LGEN Morioka’s 54th Division will remain at Imphal as the front reserve as it has more disabled squads and will need more time to recover.

LGEN Tsuchihachi’s 56th Division is closing in on Kohima from multiple axes and will recombine there.

The 55th Division is closing in on Jorhat with LGEN Oba pencilled in to take command once it recombines. 144th Regt is at Jorhat, but is still assigned to 4th Fleet. It is still low priority to change that command arrangement. 55th Div probably won’t recombine until late 1942.

Situation in SEAF.
Luganvile is now a major allied base, while Ndeni for me is a delay position.
Lunga and Tulagi are currently reasonably well defended but with the initiative now passing to the allies they will probably just be bypassed. I've started preparing defences in depth with Shortlands as the backstop, Rabaul, Kavieng and Manus further back. Additional Infantry Groups will be bought out of Japan to help garrison major SEAF bases, with the 62nd Infantry Group less than a week from reaching Shortlands

Situation in 4th Fleet area of operations

The Ellice Islands have been abandoned as they were just getting pummelled by 4E bombers.

7th JNAF Coy will soon be withdrawn from Baker Island as I don't have any Rufes to send there right now anyway.

Tarawa is the main defensive position just north of this image, with HQ 26th Air Flotilla there.
In support are 40th JNAF AFU, 63rd Naval Guard and the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th Yokosuka SNLF units.

8th and 9th JNAF Coys are being withdrawn to Kusaie and Ponape respectively, to develop a string of air bases to keep a withdrawal path open from the Marshalls to Truk.

Situation in NEAF

IJN main units are:
- CV Squadron 1 (4CV BB CS 11DD)
- CVL Sqn 1 (CV Junyo 3CVL CS 6DD)
- BB Sqn 2 (2BB 4DD) - bombardments of Adak Island
- CA Sqn 7 (2CA 5DD) - bombardments of Attu Island
- CL Sqn 5 (2CL 3DD) - defensive surface combat patrols around Kiska Island

The Adak Island assault force has 52nd Div 100% prepared and 7th Div 98% prepared, they are also well supplied. A deliberate attack will go in once 7th Div is 100% prepped.

Japanese adjusted assault: 2747
Allied adjusted defense: 7211

Allied adjusted defense: 184. That’s almost a x5 bonus to the raw AV of 37.
Japanese assault odds: 1 to 1 that’s 1.65:1.
Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+), experience(-), supply(-)

Japanese Deliberate attack
Attacking force 3896 troops, 40 guns, 4 vehicles, Assault Value = 186
Defending force 3833 troops, 40 guns, 46 vehicles, Assault Value = 145
Japanese adjusted assault: 15 – another awful result. The SNLF and Ind. Bn lack the firepower to capture this hex on their own. I will need to find some combat engineers and artillery to join in here, but nothing is prepared so they will take large disablements upon landing.
Allied adjusted defense: 467
Japanese assault odds: 1 to 31 (fort level 3)
Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+), forts(+), disruption(-), fatigue(-) experience(-). Plenty of (-) but still get just over x3 bonus to raw AV. Notably the defenders still have supply.
An IJA Division would do the trick, but I don’t have any spare unless I send one of the Southern Army reserve Divs north. 4th Division is at Soerabaja and 21st Division is at Rabaul. As 14th Army is also at Rabaul with 48th Div, perhaps this is a job for the 21st Division.

BB Arizona is reported to have been sunk near Pearl Harbor on Jun 21, 1942 – this is a surprise. I just checked my June notes and BB Arizona was hit by 1 torpedo fired by SS I-15 on 16 Jun 42, about the same time that BB Nevada was hit by multiple torpedoes. The Int Staff are now reporting 3x USN BBs sunk. BB West Virginia in SOPAC 8 Jun 42; BB Nevada near Pearl Harbour 17 Jun 42 and now BB Arizona.
SS Triton is reported to have been sunk near Adak Island on Jul 07, 1942
3rd Air Army arrives at Saigon – LGEN Tarada has 67 air skill so will retain command. There are only 3x LGENs with slightly better air skills but with max 73 air skill it is not worth replacing him at the cost of 30 PPs.
Currently playing my first PBEM, no house rules Scenario 1 as IJ.

IJN carriers in action in NEAF against a USN force consisting of one old CL, 5DD +2DMS.
I wonder if COMNORPAC thought the IJN carriers had moved west to replenish, or if this task force is just bait and something much bigger is moving in the "darkness" outside of IJN naval search patrols.

Defending force 28640 troops, 123 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 799 – this AV number seems to be dropping. I checked back through these notes, as it feels like this AV was much higher previously. The last few days this AV was 810, 805, 803, now this. This stack should be competely out of supply and fading now. It still feels too high for a deliberate attack as this is Wooded Rough terrain, so I will just keep up these bombardments whenever supply allows.

Japanese Ships
BB Hyuga
BB Ise
BB Yamato
Allied ground losses:
110 casualties reported – the BBs do reasonable damage, but I don’t know if any of these results can be used to estimate fort levels. An IJA deliberate attack is ordered for tomorrow, so I won’t have to guess for long. My guess is level 4, based on the number of base forces present.

Sub attack near Shimonoseki at 105,56 – despite mines and ASW patrols at the entrances, allied subs are in the Sea of Japan. The Kure based FP unit is almost ready to receive Jakes and it will start flying naval search over this end of the Sea of Japan to try and stop this happening again.
Japanese Ships – these are new Std-C TKs on their way to Ominato to move fuel to Sapporo. Heavy Industry at Sapporo and Muroran has just run out of fuel. I need to rebalance the export of fuel from Honshu to Hokkaido as NEAF operations are draining what I had been sending their for industry to use.

Naval Attack: 3 x 500 lb SAP Bomb
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Adak Island (162,52)
Japanese Deliberate attack
Attacking force 21714 troops, 201 guns, 41 vehicles, Assault Value = 790
Defending force 12434 troops, 277 guns, 391 vehicles, Assault Value = 240
Japanese adjusted assault: 266
Allied adjusted defense: 803
Japanese assault odds: 1 to 3 (fort level 3) – not a great result as the forts weren’t reduced, but they are confirmed as level 3. The positive news is that raw AV should now be about 693/183 = 3.79:1, up from 3.29:1 before this battle. The attackers will pause for a few days to allow disruption and fatigue to recover while the BBs continue to work on increasing the morale, fatigue and disruption of the defenders. The longer this takes though, the higher the likelihood of bigger and better USN forces showing up...

12 Jul 42 reports

Post by jdsrae »

Just noticed that the skipper of CA Takao is one LCDR Omi. He is not aggressive enough to command a CA so CAPT Bunji Asakuri (naval skill 91, aggression 85) has taken over command for the cost of 8 PP. Quite what happened to the previous CAPT and the XO to require Mr Omi to take command is anyone’s guess. The 3x CA Takao class and 5x escorting DD Kagero will move back to Kure for their 3/42 and 5/42 upgrades respectively.
While checking this task force, CAPT Koma has taken command of CA Atago from the previous cautious skipper, and CAPT Watanabe gets through his performance review and retains command of CA Chokai. Two of the five DD skippers were also replaced, with no place for cautious commanders of CAs or DDs. If they have high naval skills, cautious commanders will be considered for BB, CL, AO or TK command appointments.

AV Kunikawa Maru air unit

Post by jdsrae »

EDITED, CASE CLOSED - I moved AV Kunikawa Maru to a base with >20k supply and the air unit arrived.

I have noticed that the Kunikawa-1 air unit has been stuck at 2 days to go for a few days. Has anyone else noticed that before and how did you "unstick" it?

AV Kunikawa Maru is at Okinawa. It doesn't seem to matter if the ship is disbanded in port or in a task force, the days to go are stuck at 2...

Should I risk the USN sub screen and try to escort it back to a big Home Islands port that has >20k supply to see if that helps?

Any advice on this appreciated.

Morning Air attack on 5th Australian Division, at 76,134 , near Daly Waters – caught in the open terrain in the middle of nowhere. Interesting to spot this CMF (militia) Division here as it is a long way from supply and support. Other units are spotted still moving south, with what could be one more CMF Division one hex behind it. 5th Aus Div appears to have stopped, but I won’t commit ground forces forward as they would just get destroyed by 4E bomber strikes.
16th Army is still all in the Northern Territory and digging in to fortify Katherine and Darwin, with orders to delay the allied recapture of Darwin for at least a few months.

Ground combat at Chungking (76,45)
Japanese Bombardment attack
Attacking force 5580 troops, 278 guns, 493 vehicles, Assault Value = 1856. Disabled squads are recovering with about 30 AV recovered yesterday. All units are combat effective except the 12th Division which remains in reserve. It just reached 100AV so is only about 25% of full combat power.
Defending force 108778 troops, 669 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 3488. I’ve been loosely tracking the status of both forces at Chungking (as I remember) and 3 x resurrected Chinese Corps with about 250 AV each have arrived since the disastrous first deliberate attack.
Japanese ground losses:
Vehicles lost 2 (1 destroyed, 1 disabled) – IJA artillery siege SOPs of parking the trucks and tractors near the artillery gun line continues…
Allied ground losses:
175 casualties reported
Squads: 5 destroyed, 10 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled
Assaulting units: no change, only artillery units are bombarding on the assumption that this will allow infantry Divisions to recover disablements a little bit faster.

IJA Tanks

With the subordinate units of the 1st and 2nd Tank Divs moving to recombine, I've also noticed that the next tank upgrade is available. Once the first two Tank Divs have recombined I will allow them to upgrade to the Type 1 Medium Tank.
I figure the extra armour is worth more than the reduction in anti-soft fire power compared to the current Type 97, especially for the ongoing siege of Chungking.

I'm not sure if it helps in game, but IRL tanks with higher anti-armour firepower would help to reduce fortified positions.
The higher armour rating should also help keep them in the fight for longer.

8th Route Army – It’s easy to get Yunnan and Yenan mixed up, but this unit is a long way from home.
It looks like I have blocked a major exodus from China moving to India, which would have grown into a beast by 1944. I wonder what (if anything) moved to India before I could get a blocking force here…

Device Nakajima Ha-44 advances R&D – also to March 1943. There is only 1x30 factory on this engine so the Ha-45 will start production first.
19th Tank Regiment - some devices have been upgraded at Fukuoka
1st Ind.Tank Co - some devices have been upgraded at Truk
50th JNAF AF Unit - some devices have been upgraded at Amchitka Island
AMC Hokoku Maru available for service in damaged state at Darwin – major float damage from a recent sub attack. There are no allied sub spotted near Darwin right now so she will be escorted back to Soerabaja to fully repair.
Junyo-1 on CV Junyo converting to size 21 from 19
Loss of xAKL Mayachi Maru on Jul 15, 1942 is admitted
Kunikawa Maru-1 arrives on Kunikawa Maru – the eagerly awaited arrival was finally triggered by moving the ship from Nago to Naha which had 20k+ supply. The 2 days to go for the float plane unit become 0 overnight. The plan for this AV and the float plane unit is to resize it to size 24, upgrade it to Jakes, assign trained pilots and move them to Saishu To. From there, they will fly search and ASW patrols to intensify the coverage over the convoy approaches to Sasebo and Fukuoka.
Currently playing my first PBEM, no house rules Scenario 1 as IJ.

Image

tanks do nothing against forts, the only way to reduce forts is with combat engineers and/or by positive adjusted av ratios during the attack. Deliberate attacks never reduce more than 1 fort, shock attacks reduce according to the adjusted av ratio. Highest fort reduction I've seen so far was 6 forts in one attack, 1 by the engineers and another 5 by the shock attack.

Ground combat at 76,46 (near Chungking) – one hex SW of Chungking.
Japanese Deliberate attack
Attacking force 53817 troops, 631 guns, 106 vehicles, Assault Value = 1623
Defending force 26208 troops, 149 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 488
Japanese adjusted assault: 876
Allied adjusted defense: 346
Japanese assault odds: 2 to 1

Defender: terrain(+), experience(-), supply(-)
Attacker:
Japanese ground losses:
2056 casualties reported
Squads: 4 destroyed, 129 disabled
Non Combat: 1 destroyed, 12 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 29 disabled
Allied ground losses:
7698 casualties reported
Squads: 332 destroyed, 66 disabled
Non Combat: 490 destroyed, 7 disabled
Engineers: 11 destroyed, 5 disabled
Guns lost 32 (23 destroyed, 9 disabled)
Units retreated 8 – east into Wooded Rough terrain, the hex SE of Chungking. I have no idea what the raw AV of this stack would be now as the destroyed squads may have already been disabled. I will move forces to surround this stack then post a guard before moving the rest of this stack to Chungking. A mountain artillery Bn is ordered to cross the river to flip the hexside into Chungking.
Assaulting units:
1st Division – will move NW then into Chungking from the west to avoid a shock attack across the river.
15th/B Division – will hold this hex until the hexside is flipped, then move to garrison Neikiang. That will allow the 1st Mobile Engineer Regt (current garrison) to move and form 1st Tank Div.
11th Army – will move NW then into Chungking from the west
6th Division – will move NW then into Chungking from the west
34th Division – will move NW then into Chungking from the west
3rd/A Division – the most disabled division, will move SE along the good road and surround the stack that was just kicked out of this hex, each RCT moving to flip a separate hexside. It will then act as the guard unit.
3rd/B Division
3rd/C Division
51st Ind.Mtn.Gun Battalion - 11th Army artillery will all move to Chungking. One Bn will sneak across to flip the hexside then the others will cross to join the main force.
1st Mortar Battalion
14th Medium Field Artillery Regiment
15th Ind.Medium Field Artillery Regiment
2nd Ind. Mountain Gun Regiment
52nd Ind.Mtn.Gun Battalion
Defending units:
4th Chinese Corps – these Corps have about 50 AV on average each, so are largely combat ineffective. The main threat they pose is if they are allowed to move to India to rebuild, so I will work to prevent that. It would be best for me if they withdrew into Chungking, but I doubt they will do that.

Ground combat at Changsha (82,52)
Japanese Bombardment attack
Attacking force 5856 troops, 38 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1132
Defending force 73885 troops, 313 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 2596 – this AV total is going nowhere, hovering aroud 2600 for the last few weeks despite daily bombardments and being out of supply. Changsha still has 9 active resources and 17 active Light Industry, so they must be growing their own vegetables.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Kienko (78,41)
Japanese Bombardment attack
Attacking force 12680 troops, 147 guns, 42 vehicles, Assault Value = 456
Defending force 31215 troops, 226 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 870 – first look at this raw AV number. NCAA is moving in so will just post a single Div here as the guard unit and move the rest to Chungking.
Allied ground losses:
20 casualties reported
Squads: 1 destroyed, 0 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled
Assaulting units:
17th Division
13th Army
10th Mortar Battalion
Defending units: Average AV of each Corps is <100. From memory, about half of them have been defeated before so there are likely a couple with 200+.

D3A1 Val from Saeki Ku T-1 attacking a KXI Class class SS at 88,65 an Allied SS is reported HIT – in the narrows near Formosa. I have high hopes for these Val groups flying ASW. As the pilots improve their experience they be used as replacements for carrier based DB units.

Akagi-3 at CV Akagi takes B5N2 Kate replacements – The CV task force replenishes at Ominato.
The 7/42 upgrades are due. For these 4x CVs it gives a about a 10-20% boost in AA capability but it will take them out of the action for 3-4 weeks. The DD Shiratsuyu class with them also have a good 7/42 ASW upgrade available. The DD upgrade is a good one so while the DDs are in port the CVs may as well take their upgrade too. This task force will move to Yokosuka for upgrade. CVs Shokaku and Zuikaku are available so I will find some DDs to escort and send them to NEAF to support the movement of supply to the Aleutians.

Akagi-1 on CV Akagi converting to size 30 from 18 – I will reallocate IJN pilots once these CVs get to Yokosuka and start their upgrades. I've also manually reset some size changes to add a few more fighters to increase allocated planes to exactly equal the 100% capacity of each carrier.

CONTACT REPORT from NEAF
10 x allied ships spotted moving towards Adak Island. Mostly reported as AMC with a few AM/APD. I assume this is a reinforcement task force.
CA Sqn 5 (Tone and Chikuma) plus CL Sqn 7 (Natori and Kinu) are both on surface combat covering patrol in the Adak hex, reaction range was set to 0. They don't seem to have been spotted despite being there for the last 4-5 days.
Their reaction range is changed to 2 in expectation of fireworks tomorrow night.
