Bomb the oil anywhere and anywhen you can do so without major losses. The Magwe oil may seem like a bonus but it will help extend the Japanese fuel situation. The Magwe oil should not get repaired as it is too easy to bomb.

It appears that you have Merak covered but still evacuate any surface ships that are in the Java sea out now before the Sunda Strait is captured.
Seek peace but keep your gun handy.

I'm not a complete idiot, some parts are missing! :o

Magwe's oil importance is dependent on how the game is developing

I think for him it is, because Palembang is still in Allied hands, and will remain for a few more months

eliminating Magwe is something Allied players should try to do, regardless, the challenge is that in many games Japan will capture Calcutta or at least Bangladesh; then Magwe oil is safe for at least a year; which definitively adds up.

India is one of the few places where the Allies can safely park bombers, early war. Low risk of naval bombardment (vs Pacific islands), plenty of supply, relatively well developed airfields, rails to move in/ move out squadrons even when depleted

With Calcutta still British, Magwe oil will be gone in a week or two, at most, from the time of its capture 3 days ago. That negates a lot of oil for the long term survival of Japan

I would agree it's more important if you still hold Palembang....that's a problem for Japan!

With 3 Bases in range for CAP to leak, I think your assessment is too optimistic, even if he will not LRCAP.

I like to be optimistic, but this is a numbers game:

I have Calcutta at level 8, with 165 ready bombers (181 in total)
I have Chittagong at level 5, with 58 ready bombers (63 total) + 205 fighters (222 total), a mix of P-40s, P-39s and Hurricanes for sweep and escort
I have 165 more fighters, in reserve, at Ledo

Once Magwe is closed, he will still have a level 2 base (Mandalay) + a couple level 1s
I am optimistic I can defeat that, if losses got too high I might shift to pure sweeps for a few turns

April 24.42: Fall of Bataan and Magwe update

Post by Jorge_Stanbury »

updated
- Bataan fell on April 24, a few weeks later than historically

- after 10 days of punishment, Magwe oil is at 18(283). There was no air-to-air resistance after day 3, but his AA guns shot down more than a dozen bombers. I think I will call off the strike, as for the last few turns it had been diminishing returns; or maybe keep it for one more turn

- not too many news, otherwise, he is now consolidated in Java, and I am now trying to withdraw as much as I can; mainly squadrons and base forces

Corregidor fell 6 May, 42 and I believe in the game Bataan and Corregidor are combined as one. If I am mistaken then Corregidor is combined with Manila.

May 16.42: Carrier battle of Rossel Island

Post by Jorge_Stanbury »

Long time!!
date is May 16.42 turns had been relatively boring for the last month or so, not a lot have changed:

- I still control southern Sumatra, from Benkoelen to PAlembang (fort level 6) and Oosthaven, he haven't invaded "in force", not yet. That mean I should keep Palembang for at least July 42

- He successfully invaded Java, and is methodically moving north. I control the north (from Tilatjap to Batavia)

- carrier battle; if Washington Island was my "Midway", this one we just fought at Rossel island is my "Coral Sea"
meaning that I lost it, strategically. I saw, last turn, his invasion fleet moving to my level 3 airbase at Rossel island last turn. It was kind of too obvious that this was going to be a trap. but I had good CAT search cover and I didn't see his carriers. So the end result is that I fought the entire mini-KB vs Hornet and a level 3 airbase.

Possible losses (still one or two more turns to go)
- Allies: Hornet is at 80 fires, will probably sink... I have had so bad luck with fires in this PBEM game!, at least compared to my previous ones
- Japan: CVE Taiyo will likely sink, CV Junyo was torpedoed and might end with heavy damage

So looking back, it was a big mistake to send the carrier, I think I would have had similar results and less losses with just the L3 airbase

Invasion will fail, but the entire point of the invasion was to bait me... so that was well played

RE: May 16.42: Carrier battle of Rossel Island

Post by Jorge_Stanbury »

Updates after 2nd day of battle:

CV Hornet, CVE Taiyo sank

invasion fleet intercepted by surface TF, but Allied captain decided not to fight [:@], but only to evict it from Rossel. 1 xAK sank 1 xAP damaged in the air phase

2 Japanese naval bombardments, followed by a clash between Warspite and Ise; results inconclusive

air strikes focused on battleships, Ise "on fire", but not at risk

Almost 1000 AV, Level 6 Forts, Swampy Terrain, 171K supply on hand.....Palembang is going to require 10 IJA Divisions and/or several months of siege to take. That is major negligence on part of your opponent, he should've been bombing Palembang for months to prevent fort building and also torch supply, if he wasn't going to take it in December.

You can win this game via an oil campaign; you have a head start, so that should clearly be your strategy. Bomb Magwe, and try to hold Northern Oz; if it gets much later and you still hold Indian Ocean ports on Sumatra or Java, you may even consider bringing more troops IN, especially aviation support and US aircraft.

Magwe is gone [;)][;)]
actually 13 points of oil left, I just decided to stop at 13 because I was losing too many bombers for less and less

That is the plan pretty much, sometime in early 43 I will start moving on, then by mid 43 it should be risky to send TK convoys to the HI

And the key for Japan is not how much oil is captured, but how many round trips to Japan the TKs can complete

I hope my opponent doesn't ghost me in 43

highlights of May 18th:

S-28 put 3 torpedoes in BB Ise, which was damaged on the carrier battle
June 22 EDIT: BB Ise is confirmed, sunk

Surface combat between between cruiser TFs ended with more losses for Allies; it really bothers me that the oldest Japanese cruiser, escorted by old destroyers, at daytime, can defeat a superior Allied TF

May 19.42: Rabauls' fish in a barrel

Post by Jorge_Stanbury »

It was time to unleash the B-17s in the Pacific; the idea was that maybe the most damaged carriers would be disbanded in port. It was a reasonable idea, because it is being 3 days since the carrier battle

There were no carriers, no warships at all, except for one DD... However, I am very happy with the results [:)]

[X(] WOW! Such a concentrated raid. Very successful. Lots of ships to dive to after the war!
Seek peace but keep your gun handy.

really wonder what your opponent is doing. Why keeping that many ships in range of Allied 4Es when he can't even provide anything like a decent CAP? Not even with 200 Zeroes on CAP would it be a good idea to have so many ships disbanded in port in range of any heavy bombers.[8|] Said it earlier already, I fear this game won't last as long as it should for you.

for me the worries is what will happen when the fuel runs low... I mean he is using his BBs as if he was an oil sheik
it also helped me that for the last few days, we had been focused on naval attacks, most of his fighters were busy on LRCAP over his ships
and this was the very 1st mass attack, of any sort, using B-17s in the Pacific area
