Training CAP - Bug or Feature?

Post by paradigmblue »

Fighters set to Training will not rise to meet opposing fighter sweeps, but they will sortie against bombers. That means that players can use the training order to prevent their fighters from being swept but still provide CAP over the hex. The message in-game is that the squadron "gets caught up in the attack" or something similar. I don't have any data on how well the fighters set to train perform in this role.

I don't recall ever seeing a house rule in a PBEM game on the forums that rules out this practice. Is that because it's considered so out of bounds that it goes without saying that the tactic is not allowed, is it an accepted practice, or is it so ineffective that a rule against it isn't necessary?

The game is working as designed.

No house rules usually.

Results vary and there are methods to counter it.

Well, I always found it strange that CAP does not have an official more cautious option, when they evade the fight against sweepers and fight only when it really matters - against (escorted) bombers. Success in evading could be subject to timely radar warning, skill levels etc checks, but it is a sensible option.

I can't state the training flights don't intercept sweeps … I think I have seen it. But most sweeps are strato in a PBEM, whereas bombing runs rarely are. And training flights are generally 6-10K, so the bombing runs are more likely.

Against the AI where strato sweeps don't exist, I'm pretty sure I have had training flights mix it up with sweeps ….

I would add this thread:

as being particularly pertinent too. It dissects a game exemplar of an unit undertaking training performing ad hoc CAP.

True, I have had training flights intercept lower flying sweeps. When Japan uses a low level stacked CAP, the Allies sweep much lower.
