Port Control

Post by canuckgamer »

It is August 1940 and I invaded and occupied Syracuse with a French Corps. The Axis are going with the All France strategy. I have occupied it now for two turns but it is still showing as an Axis port and I can't land more units there. Anyone know why it didn't convert to an Allied port when I occupied it? Thanks.

Hi Canuckgamer, is it possible to send me the ChallengeID for your match so I could take a look? This can be seen when you are in the PBEM++ lobby and mouse hover over the match in your 'Games' list.

The challenge number is 182431. We are playing the 1939 Naval Mod Campaign but don't think that would affect port control. Thanks.

I just did my move and Syracuse is now an Allied port but it took at least 2 turns. Hopefully you can check turn by turn.

Thanks, unfortunately I can't check back, but good to know it switched to Allied control.

Just posted the following in another thread, and if there was an enemy unit in that port then this likely applies to your game as well so I thought I would copy/paste here too.

This is working as intended for now. The reason for this is that when the Allied naval unit leaves the port, it does so on its turn and the port is still under their control when they leave. Ending the turn there is a check that is performed to pass control of adjacent hexes to those hexes next to friendly units, towns etc.

When the Allies end their turn, and after they have left the port, the check is for them, not for the Axis. This is why the empty port is still controlled by them after they end their turn. Once you end your turn, as the Axis, the check is now for you and the port will convert to your control.

This is just how the engine works and hopefully this makes sense,

Thanks for the reply. The exact sequence of events was the following. There was no Axis unit in Syracuse when I conducted an amphibious landing with a French infantry unit so I occupied Syracuse. No Allied naval could enter the port because for 2 turns it was still showing and operating as an Axis controlled port. I would have thought that at the end of the turn that my French unit occupied Syracuse it would change the control to Allied. Consequently my French unit was not supplied from Syracuse and was attacked and eliminated at the end of turn 2 but the Axis did not have enough operational points to occupy it. In turn 3 it finally reverted to Allied control and I transported another French ground unit in to Syracuse. By this time the Germans had parachuted two airborne units and they along with the lone Italian infantry in Sicily destroyed the second French unit.
It is a catch 22. You are saying that an Allied unit would have to enter the port to get a check for control yet they couldn't enter because it remained an Axis port. I think the port should have reverted to Allied control as soon as the French unit occupied Syracuse. The city hex of Syracuse should also be a determinant for control of the port.
I can see this being a big issue when the Allies invade Europe. With the control of a port not changing to Allied as soon as it is occupied means the countdown for the port gaining back some of it's value will be delayed and the invading Allied units will not have any supply for a couple of turns.

Apologies my description above that I copied and pasted would have to be reversed for you as it was for another game where the Axis wanted control of the port, and not like in your game where it was the Allies that wanted control.

Essentially there is no catch-22 as you do not require a naval unit in the port to gain control, rather the description above was for when you capture a city/town adjacent to a port that still has an enemy naval unit in place there.

This doesn't sound like it was a factor in your game and to be honest I'm not sure then why Syracuse did not go to Allied control. For example, I just ran a quick test campaign of this and it converted to Allied control as soon as I took Syracuse on my end.

These are always difficult to investigate when they are not easily repeatable, but generally speaking it should go over to your control as you've suggested.
