Fighter Bombers

Post by stormbringer3 »

Looking at the 1941 advancement Interceptors and Escorts get an additional stat but Fighter Bombers get nothing. Shouldn't they get something?
Thanks.

No one uses them. I think they should get some extra range, up to 10 max.

I know, that's why I brought this up. I think that they should be a more viable choice.

Historically, fighter bombers appear late in the war. But, one question, if you are searching a technology of 1939 in 1942, do you get a bonus to discover faster?

F/Bs came into being because the pure fighters had less to do. Their value was being more responsive than medium bombers and good at close support and attacking targets of opportunity, a job that was done by CAS aircraft in Germany and Russia. The game allows western allies to build CAS so there is no need for less effective F/Bs in an environment of air superiority. Arguably they will be more useful for axis given allied fighter superiority, but by then axis have far better ways of spending their prod. points

The other price you pay for having F/Bs is that the reseach points will always be much better spent elsewhere.

Would you not agree that this is a design flaw? Why include something in the game where there is no trade off, where it is always the inferior choice?

Not a flaw becuse there is nothing wrong, but perhaps an irrelevancy except for the purist who might want to buy them because of historical accuracy. I admit that's unlikey because the game isn't 'historically accurate' nor was it designed to be, so that's not a flaw either.

The Germans had the Fw 190 F and G which were decent fighter bombers. I'm also of the opinion why have a choice which no one uses.

I think they need extra range. Historically they had this going for them over dedicated interceptors, at least for the Western Allies.

They might just be worth building if they had longer legs, at least in small numbers. Right now they are kind of a noob trap. Nobody with any experience in the game builds them.

I hate noob traps.

Asking this question once more. May help to have them later in the war.

Good question. What if the range would be 8? Would the y be somewhat worthwhile then?
